This is a cult based on the charisma of an uneducated delusional font of pseudo-scientism buzzwords.

Logic, objectivity, systematically, efficiency, reality.

You'd think he'd want to avoid using euphoric so much. Edit: not that it's a buzzword, more because of its association with one of the most widely ridiculed atheist quotes on the internet.

I was gonna make a long post about this one but haven't had the time. This guy believes he has found a 4 step method to change your "core value" from the human "default" of "comfort" to that of "logic." (Gratuitous quotes are necessary here.) In doing so, you become MUCH more (dozens of times or more) intelligent, efficient, motivated, and beneficial to society; Athene believes he himself is the most intelligent person alive "by far," even beating out the likes of Einstein.

His belief is that changing your "core value" to "logic," a process called "clicking," involves acknowledging the non-existence of morality and the unimportance of subjective things. Only by being "logical" can you come closer to the "objective reality," which is the natural order of things and the objectively best way for things to be.

Athene believes his ideas, which make up the religion he dubbed Athenism, will spread rapidly across the scientific community and then the world, becoming a global universal religion. Once you "click," you transcend subjectivity and overcome mental illness and delusions and realize how Athenism is the only truth. He believes Einstein "clicked," because Einstein believed in the work of Spinoza. He claims that he is "completing Spinoza's work," by including twenty-first century knowledge of neuroscience to create what he calls neuro-Spinozism. Spinoza clicked. He just didn't have the big picture.

That big picture involves the knowledge that the reward center of the brain is related to feelings of satisfaction. Neil "The Grass" Tyson said once that he is overwhelmed with awe at the thought of the beauty of the cosmos, and said he wished someone would attach electrodes to his head to show that that awe is the same feeling experienced by the religious in reverence of God. Replacing outdated ideals with logic involving a region of the brain? Exactly what Athene's talking about! NDT CLICKED! Athene DID the experiment NDT only dreamed of and he has the evidence, the final missing key! Surely now there is no debate that Athenism is the only truth; will you argue with Einstein, Spinoza, and Kneel Before Tyson?

Besides, there is a wealth of scientific information supporting the miraculous capabilities of this four step method of Athenism. He has SEVERAL anecdotal cases of people who underwent therapy for depression/bipolar for SEVERAL YEARS, who clicked and are now definitely cured. And it's peer reviewed! By athenists. The ones in the study. Documentary. YouTube video. Ooh boy. Will add more later, and specific quotes and clips. Lovely stuff

Edit 1: The best part, he rents an abandoned mental hospital and lives with his converts in it.

I mean, to be fair he is living the dream. Who doesn't want to make a theo-philosophical cult? Really there should be less self aggrandizing delusions and insane nonsense though. When I make process philosophy into a cult, there won't be open insanity. Just some of the language will make you think there is.

[–]kogasaplsA ∧ ¬A ⊢ 💣 11 ポイント12 ポイント  (3子コメント)

This guy is having a mental breakdown or manic episode. The way he talks when he explains (in complete gibberish) how Einstein, Spinoza, and NDT all clicked and how his religion will soon become universal, he becomes giddy and forces out words faster than he can process them. Anyone with the awareness to realize what he's saying is nonsense can see he needs help. But no, he found a bunch of idiots on the internet to feed his delusions, label the non-believers trolls and fools, etc., so he'll never get help. I don't think he intended to start a cult. He just genuinely believes he's made the most important discovery in human history, and he has to spread it.

[–]bunker_man 8 ポイント9 ポイント  (1子コメント)

To be fair, I can understand why certain people who really like atheism, but aren't overly bright might see it as convincing. The idea that there's a specific mental paradigm that will suddenly fix your irrationality is something a lot of that type of person probably intuitively subconsciously believe in.

[–]kogasaplsA ∧ ¬A ⊢ 💣 6 ポイント7 ポイント  (0子コメント)

It should be obvious to anyone that Athene hasn't presented a valid argument and is making claims he can't possibly support or even understand. His knowledge of Spinoza literally extends to the content of a YouTube video about Spinoza which he watched on stream after someone told him to look up Spinoza. But it was obvious then that he was completing Spinoza's work, realizing his dream. His knowledge of neuroscience doesn't even scratch the first week of Psych 101, he knows about "the reward center of the brain" and thinks you can "rewire it," with thoroughly non-scientific justification for how you would do so. There's just nothing there, so it's incredible that people take this so seriously. If it were a self-help movement without the cultish behavior I would understand, but calling your movement a religion and inviting the devout to live with you in an old mental hospital is next level shit.

[–]paradigmarson 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I see a lot of buzzwords and much of the language doesn't sound too precise. I also see potential signs of psychosis. It reminds me a bit of how I acted as an autistic teenager: benevolently narcissistic, attempting to start movements.

That said, I think he may be onto something, even if it isn't strictly new. What he described sounds very much like what I went through as a teenager: value logic and truth above all else, negate all other values, make pursuit of truth the only basis for thought. Didn't go well for me, admittedly. I think a lot of people go through a similar crisis when they're young. Perhaps writing a theory of how to do it properly is helpful -- or dangerous. To me he seems to have some good intuitive insights based upon little knowledge or academic skills. He should balance that powerful intuition with better definitions, citations, testable hypotheses, etc -- the stuff that scientists and philosophers deal with.

I'm not sure exactly how 'the god helmet' works. Sounds dangerous.

Him, or someone else, posted a video called "Does Life Have A Purpose?"

It was part pseudo-science, part pseudo-philosophy but all bad.

A /r/philosophy reg, I forget who, called it out and dude makes a new thread to respond to the criticism, calls the mods Nazis for deleting the thread, whines about it on Twitch, decides to make a video calling all philosophy bullshit (you know, a calm and measured response) and spams it to /r/philosophy. Lots of it was deleted or I'm too lazy now from turkey to track it all down.
