You haven't studied the problem enough: Bitcoin favors waste energy which is clean. A dam providing too much energy for its surrounding people for example. Fossil fuels strengths are poorly suited to mining, portability and fast energy usage scaling are not needed.

That's not how power grids work.

If I am running a power grid, I am not going to waste energy. I will idle facilities as necessary based on current loading and expected predictions based on historical consumption and weather.

The same reason why brownouts are not common are the same reason that power grids aren't run with excess power.

I don't see any effort here to actually analyze, like the people who wrote the articles he linked to. No numbers at all. Just vaguely casting doubt on those. I guess if you assume that you won't have to have banks at all, then you can include the energy associated with the physical banks. I don't assume that.

Mining will continue when the 21mil limit is hit (if bitcoin is still a thing in 2140).

It uses a lot of electricity. We do need to think about how we're generating that energy.

I would assume by 2140, most energy is solar/wind/hydro/nuclear.

and they will look back on us and laugh that we couldn't get off fossil fuel for so long.

Yes, part of it is how we generate. But the other part is how much we use.

I don't think the energy used is a high price for the utility and security provided. Everyone would be happier if the world burned less carbon. it's not a bitcoin issue.

Everyone will have Tesla roofs by then, or something similar.

Now do some calculations on the carbon footprint of fiat money. Include the printing presses, the energy to run them, the building built to house them, every bank, every employee of every bank and their cars, every bank building (heating, cooling etc), all amored cars, the politicians, the Federal Reserve and it's buildings, ....and now multiply that by every country that runs a central bank

Uh... Then divide by the value of the transaction volume.

Good point. And we should also add all the currencies that lose value over time using the same amount of resources.

Credit cards are 100x or 1000x worse. You are not calculating everything it takes to get credit cards to work.

The impact bitcoin makes is tiny compared to the banking sector as it stands today.

This is not a valid comparison until banks do what bitcoin does. Until then the ratio is infinity.

Bitcoin is the only thing in its class and the carbon cost of it is whatever it is.

It's like comparing the carbon impact of a data center and a banana. The comparison is mostly meaningless.

You need to do more research.

There are "greener" altcoins. Burst comes to mind.

Did you calculate also how much "carbon impact" you have by writing this idiocy? You care about "carbon impact"? Be the first human that will not breathe/fart/shit and will have a huuge impact on the planet.
Maybe you should watch and learn from this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAd2f4n6wx8&feature=youtu.be
I am just tired of these kind of eco-nazi-warriors that cares about "carbon impact"...

Good luck with that.

[–]BTC_Foreverredditor for 2 months [

ok, you first, jump from the roof. Oh no, that will be a mess on the street, more carbon impact, you better jump in a volcano so no carbon impact...

Dude, chill. It's a valid question.

Don't bother trying to have a normal conversation with him. He has been off his meds for a few months now
