Eve Online is a game that has lived far longer than anyone expected and shows no signs of slowing down. In the wake of the battle of B-R5RB and the recent "This is Eve" trailer, the game is seeing more new subscribers than ever before. /r/Eve stands as one of the many ways that players can socialize with other players and fans of the game. /r/Eve is so well known amongst the community that CCP Games, the makers of Eve Online, directly interact with other players on the subreddit, both taking suggestions and joking around.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself!
AbsoluteTruth: DurrHurrDurr, CEO of Reddit's largest in-game corporation.
nuadi: I am CEO of Fem Bot Industries. Professional Miner and Industrialist.
Spysix: I'm Spysix but my ingame name will always be a secret, I play Eve mostly on weekends with Spectre Fleet or Bombers Bar, but mostly Spectre Fleet. When I'm not, I'm mission running or scanning sites.
ChribbaX: Chribba, solo carebear, 3rd party provider and Veldspar fanatic. Sometimes referred to as the most trustworthy pilot in New Eden.
2. How did you get involved with /r/Eve?
AbsoluteTruth: I started playing EVE when my corp was founded in 2010; I've been active in the community since then and eventually became a mod.
nuadi: I joined /r/eve in Oct 2010 after starting EVE that February. There are very few things in EVE Online that cannot be bought: Knowledge and Reputation. I got involved with /r/eve specifically to build the later.
Spysix: Like, subscribe or wind up on the mod team? I subscribed back in 2012 when I started playing the game. I became a mod in 10/2014 after a drama brigade dethroned a decent moderator and 5 new moderators were sworn in based on popular vote. I wrote an appeal to reconsider the horrible course of action that was taking place. simon, the founder, took the easier, less confrontational option and invited me to be a moderator, his lasts words were, "because I love drama."
ChribbaX: People was talking about this Reddit thing so I had to check it out, that was in 2012
3.How would you try to explain Eve Online to an outsider?
AbsoluteTruth: EVE is one of the only MMOs with PVP mechanics that are lasting and substantial while also sporting one of the most robust economies in gaming.
nuadi: EVE Online is a player-built, player-run, and player-focused space simulator where you pilot ships to destroy others and assert your own role in the universe.
Spysix: Eve Online is a spaceship MMO where everyone plays on a single server. Players mine asteroids for ore, ore gets refined for materials, said materials can be used to build ships, starbases, equipment, ammo, etc. So many different things you can do from gathering resources, to industry, to selling, to exploring, and of course, shooting. The universe is very player driven and focused on PVP, as PVP can happen anywhere at anytime.
ChribbaX: Player generated content based upon a framework built by the developers, do anything, be anyone, fail horribly or see everything you spent 10 years building ruined by someone because you messed up
4. What's your favorite story/experience from Eve Online?
AbsoluteTruth: My favorite experience in EVE is one I kicked off myself; an ally that lived in the same area of space as us wasn't providing reimbursement to its players for ships they lost on strategic ops even though they were half our size and had three times as much income. I led a convoy to their home system role playing as a UN aid flotilla and it kicked off a huge month-long saga of drama that ended in said ally collapsing and getting kicked out of their space.
nuadi: My favorite experience actually comes from /r/eve where I convinced someone to hand me 40 billion ISK to invest in the market. To put that in perspective, 40 billion ISK at that time was roughly $1,300 USD, and he simply transferred it to me after a few private messages over Reddit. I returned every ISK, with interest as promised. It was a lot of fun handling that much ISK.
Spysix: Not sure which is my favorite. My time in Bombers Bar where we stealthfully dropped in, dropped bombs and wiped fleets and dropped out. Or the time I commanded a battlecruiser gang for the first time. You get sweaty palms and fast heart beats no other game, especially no other MMO can give you.
ChribbaX: I've always loved heading/reading/following the spying and destruction of things that other players aim for, like the destruction of BoB, the traps, the backstabbing, the drama. Can't really say I have one favorite one because they're all what have taken us to where we are today
5. What's your favorite part about the /r/Eve community?
AbsoluteTruth: The images and videos the community makes. The production quality on some of them is absolutely unreal.
nuadi: I love the /r/eve community for being helpful with not only those in genuine need of guidance, but also with those in genuine need of a slap upside the head.
Spysix: My favorite part of the eve community is the extreme diversity among it and how often it clashes within itself on a daily basis. If that makes sense.
ChribbaX: That we are all one community, we're all together in one world, not split up over 50 different servers, and we are all usually heavily invested in it, making it a very strong (but also very harsh) community
6. What would you say is the most noteworthy event in Eve's lifetime?
AbsoluteTruth: That's a tough one. If we're talking of significance in the community, probably the T20 incident; a GM was caught spawning expensive blueprints for players and it kicked off a huge shitstorm that eventually resulted in the CSM (a community-elected focus group of players) being created. If we're talking in-game, even then that's too vague. By sheer scale it was the Halloween War's cataclysmic supercapital fight, but there have been much more interesting things happen; the Band of Brothers losing sov in Delve via a rogue member of leadership being one, as well as many extremely in-depth scams. It really depends what you like reading about most.
nuadi: The most noteworthy event, to me, for EVE was when they promoted CCP Seagull to her current position as Executive Producer (if I remember correctly). Her vision for EVE and the community has placed us where we are today, and it's in the best state it's been in since I started playing.
Spysix: While a few of us brought up some significant out of game stuff. I think one of the biggest noteworthy things in game was The Bloodbath of B-R where all the super powers played their big cards when a piece of real estate in space was up for grabs. The battle resulted in so many capital deaths that the total ingame currency destroyed was roughly 11 trillion isk or somewhere around $315,00 USD when converted. The battle was so significant that the developers left a permanent landmark of dead capital ships and titans in that system for any visitors to come see.
ChribbaX:There's quite a few, ranging from developer misconduct to player events, one that is close to heart for me was quite recently where CCP almost reintroduced the previously destroyed Golden Magnate ship. Personal to me due to holding EVE history very very close to heart, and for a ship that only existed once, to be suddenly revived (and in the fashion like it would, external player lottery site) was a knife in the back from the developers on the less. This event was luckily prevented by both voices from the community and directly communication with CCP behind the scenes. For me it got very close to a point where CCP themselves would destroy 12 years of history because they were lazy, and that made it a very sensitive event for me personally. Also, logging on that day back in December, finding the "Chribba's Modified Strip Miner" item in my redeem queue, that was a pretty good feeling :)
7. Do you have anything else that you would like to share?
AbsoluteTruth: Dreddit is recruiting!
Spysix: Don't fly what you can't afford to lose.
ChribbaX: Never let anyone else dictate your goals
