A note about the whole "participation trophy" thing.
I just have a quick bone to pick about this particular issue. Currently, a lot of conservative and conservative media are portraying millennial liberals as spoiled recipients of "participation trophies" and thus don't understand the value of hard work.
I really hate this particular narrative. Statistically,48% of people who pass through our education systems don't play any sort of organized sports. This means that none of those people received any trophies at all. And, of the other ones, I'm sure there are plenty that we're playing sports that didn't award trophies or simply won some of the actual awards. Statistically this whole story doesn't make sense. As a proud high school nerd, I didn't mind this. However, with this whole argument, I am finding myself more and more bothered by the inaccurate portrayal of my generation as something we weren't. And on a personal level, it feels as though the jocks from childhood are now in charge.
I suppose this all just points towards a larger problem. It not just not understanding people on the other side of an issue, but rather ignoring statistics and demography in favor of a easier story. I just had to complain somewhere about this... has anything had similar thoughts?
