How can someone have an art degree if they think modern art is degenerate?

Because its the new modern insult. The new "masterrace" BS is people educated / working in applied science and a few select research sciences vs all the peons

[–]TrotskylvaniaInsanity Ahab 17

I've found that the people who are most vocal about this attitude also tend to spend the most time and money consuming and obsessing over things that are produced by art majors.

It's particularly fun to see a STEMlord rant about how useless humanities are...while he's at a con

Why is a sub dedicated to mocking people who spew terrible interpretations of history mocking people who study history and related topics? Was that a sarcastic remark?

A history major is actually worth something

I've bumped into quite a few STEMlords who like to shit on people who study history because it is part of the 'arts'. It was pretty sad.

Anyhow, can we please avoid (even ironically) shitting on different disciplines? It just seems like a small way to perpetuate some form of anti-intellectualism.

I don't mind it personally. It's not like STEM majors can coherently express an opinion verbally or in writing

History is usually considered a science, though...

History is a humanity, and most university-level degree programmes I've seen tend to classify it as a humanities/arts degree, unless its a combined degree with a science subject.

Can confirm. Am working on a bachelor's in history in my college's school of Liberal Arts. Actually, up until two years ago, they simply called it the school of Arts.

Other sections of the humanities such as sociology and political science are also considered sciences. That doesn't stop people from acting as if those fields are worthless unscientific rubbish.

[–]TheSuperPope500Endor was an Imperial tactical victory 4

No, its usually considered an Art. Source, my history degree was a BA.

Social Sciences, International Relations, Sociology however often are considered sciences.

I mean, I shit on majors that you can't get a job with. History is cool. Women's studies? Good fucking luck.

Also, don't complain when you major in something that is notorious for being hard to get a job with and then are unable to get a job in that industry. Say what you want about STEMsters but they've got one thing right: you're more likely to get a job in industry and make more money with a STEM degree. Do you think every engineering student is there because math is their passion? I bet a solid third of them would rather be art students.

Edit: and before I get hit with the "the fact that you can't get a job with a humanities degree is precisely what they're trying to change by complaining" meme: you can't manipulate demand for certain jobs just so everyone can do what they love and get a good job doing it. Some jobs are more in demand than others. That's just how it is, unfortunately.

implying university is only for getting a job

Is there some other reason people go to college? Sure, there will always be people who go on their parents' dime to goof off and socialize, but mature people who are serious about their education go to get a degree to get a job.

The idea that going to university will net you a job upon graduation is a meme that has origins with the GI Bill. When all those soldiers returned home from WW2 with limited prospects, the GI bill was developed in order to subsidize the educations of many men who only had skill in killing people and little education otherwise. Since then, the education industry has developed into a bit of a racket and it's no surprise that the education system and associated politicians are now peddling the message that a higher education is required to succeed in life (i.e. get a really high paying job). Sure, becoming a mechanical engineer will net you some big bucks, but I know plenty of people my age from my high school who didn't go to college who are working a trade now, making $25 an hour after only a few years, with near endless upward mobility because all their competition is in college.

I have a job, but take time of to study shit from time to time, because it is fun. Guess im an idiot then

  1. Never called you an idiot.

  2. You're not in college for a degree. I'm talking about people who are.

If you think the value of a university-level degree is measured by how easy it is to get a job afterward, then you have a very skewed and small idea of what is the point of a university education.

Ironically bashing art degrees isn't any better than actually bashing art degrees, you're still being a dick for no good reason. I'm not a humanities student, or STEM, but it's still extremely important, and there's enough of the inter-disciplinary bashing on the defaults without bringing it here.

Edit: wow, they banned me for this. Stellar modwork guys, I see why this sub has really taken off. Y'all have a lot more in common with those Internet neck beards you mock than you think. Also, in reply to that accusation you made that I can't even reply to because you banned me, you're not getting brigades from anywhere you self-important jackass, people just think you're a dick.

Using your position as a mod to sticky a post insulting those people is a dick move, yeah. You're welcome to it, your subreddit, I mod shit too, but you're still being an asshole and you better expect to hear from the people on your subreddit when they think you're doing something wrong. Being a mod doesn't make you immune to criticism.

Especially when you're a fucking humanities major too, you hypocrite. You realize everyone else is doing that to your major, why would you help them?

Especially sociology, what the fuck? Knowing the way human society works is important and you thinking otherwise is just because you're just blinded by your own self-importance.

But I'm accounting, so I guess I can just mindlessly circlejerk about how superior my major is to yours job prospect wise, right?

Firstly, why should the opinions of lurkers not be considered like those of active posters?

Furthermore, what was did you find so insulting about it that you had to come out and ban him? Is it unacceptable of users to question the pertinence of sticking statements that perpetuate the thought that the humanities as a whole are a waste of time?

FFS, There I have better elucidated my joke. The Humanities as a whole are not a waste of time

I realize I'm being a PITA by sticking to a sarcastic comment on sub that mocks online basement nazis and I apologize for that but those types of comments (even if made ironically) really rubbed me the wrong way.

I get it was a joke but frankly considering how ideas have been transmitted over the internet over the years I've become more wary of comments that (even if made ironically) perpetuate these sorts of ideas.

Please just keep into account that ironic jokes can still convey messages of dubious quality.

Yes. British leftists who were becoming increasingly critical of the Soviet bloc derided those who cheered Khrushchev sending in the tanks to crush what was essentially a mass proletarian uprising in Hungary. Hence, "tankies". It got revived on reddit by anti-Stalinist communists via ShitTankiesSay and has been percolating out to the broader internet since.
