The Time of Our Lives

Anyone familiar with Team Pebble knows full well: keeping quiet isn’t our style.

We love sharing Pebble’s story with you—whether it’s a new product, fresh feature, or simply staying in touch online and in person. Aside from announcing Pebble’s 4.3 software updates, our silence over the past month was deafening and out-of-character—we’re sorry for that.

Today, we’re breaking that silence. Join us as we close one chapter and invite you along for what’s next. We hope to answer as many questions as possible here, in our formal announcement, and on our Support site.

Pebble is joining Fitbit

Fitbit has agreed to acquire key Pebble assets. Due to various factors, Pebble can no longer operate as an independent entity, and we have made the tough decision to shut down the company. The deal finalized today preserves as much of Pebble as possible.

Pebble is ceasing all hardware operations. We are no longer manufacturing, promoting, or selling any new products. Active Pebble models in the wild will continue to work.

Pebble’s expertise, philosophy, and culture will live on at Fitbit. Much of our team and resources will join Fitbit to deliver new “moments of awesome” in future Fitbit products, developer tools, and experiences. As our transition progresses, we’ll have exciting new stories to tell and milestones to celebrate.

It’s a bittersweet time, no doubt. We’ll miss what we’re leaving behind, but are excited for what the future holds. It will be important for Pebblers to extend a warm welcome to Fitbit—as fans and customers—sharing what they love about Pebble and what they’d like to see next.

Kickstarter Backers

Backers will get refunds for any unfulfilled rewards. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, we were excited to bring Pebble 2, Time 2, and Core to the world. We’ve since shipped every Pebble 2 possible, but can’t say the same for the remaining rewards. Pebble Time 2, Pebble Core, and Pebble Time Round Kickstarter Editions will not go into final production.

Kickstarter will refund eligible pledges by March 2017.

  • No further action is needed. Eligible backers will automatically be refunded their pledges for any unfulfilled Pebble rewards (Time 2, Core, Time Round), plus any shipping, taxes, or duties paid.
  • The small number of Pebble 2 backers who did not submit the information required to finalize their reward shipments will also be refunded.
  • Successfully-received Pebble 2 rewards are the only item not eligible for a Kickstarter pledge refund.
  • Backers who ordered add-on Pebble devices to their Pledge Portals after the campaign closed may have seen a temporary authorization charge, which reversed automatically a few days later.
  • Refunds are automatically issued to the payment card the original Kickstarter pledge was placed with.
  • If the original pledge payment method is no longer active, backers must contact the financial institution that issued the card to receive the returned funds.
  • Backers outside of the United States will receive refunds equal to the $USD amount of their pledges at current exchange rates. There will be no adjustments to account for exchange rate fluctuations between the original pledge payment and the upcoming refund.
  • Visit kickstarter.com/contact with any additional questions.

Current Pebble Users

Active Pebble watches will work normally for now. Functionality or service quality may be reduced down the road. We don’t expect to release regular software updates or new Pebble features. Our new mission will focus on bringing Pebble’s unique wearables expertise to future Fitbit products. We’re also working to reduce Pebble's reliance on cloud services, letting all Pebble models stay active long into the future.

One-to-one Pebble support is no longer available. Any Pebble currently out in the wild is no longer covered by or eligible for warranty exchange. Users looking to troubleshoot their Pebbles can still visit our Help Portal and community resources:

Those who ordered and received a Pebble from pebble.com are no longer eligible for return or exchange. That said, we are processing and refunding any pebble.com returns that were successfully completed with our Support team before December 7, 2016, in addition to refunding any items purchased from pebble.com which did not ship by this date.

Those who recently purchased a Pebble at retail may return their watches based on the retailer’s return policy.

Pebblers can still find replacement charging cables and other compatible accessories (bands, skins, etc.) from Amazon.com and third-party vendors like GadgetWraps and Clockwork Synergy.

Pebble Developers

Our developer community set Pebble’s wearable technology ecosystem apart from the rest. No other wearable platform was more open or gave developers more freedom to create, experiment, and delight the world with beautiful watchfaces, useful apps, and unique experiences. The Pebble Dev community set out to Make Awesome Happen, and they accomplished that beyond our wildest dreams.

Fitbit wants to Make Awesome Happen, too. Pebble’s successful approach to third-party wearable development is undeniable, and Fitbit is welcoming our expertise in this space wholeheartedly.

Developers have an exciting opportunity to reach and delight over 50 million users and counting. The Pebble talent joining Fitbit will help the company accelerate the launch of tools and resources devs need to enhance future Fitbit products with experiences that can take wearables to new heights of utility and appeal. If this opportunity excites you too, join us for the ride! The Pebble Developer Blog has more detail on how we're bringing Pebble's expertise in this realm to Fitbit.

Until Next Time <3

Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to each and every Pebbler for making awesome happen with us over the years. Our community is vibrant. Our community is passionate. You are what made Pebble special and worth fighting for, every second of every day.

We will always remember the love you showed Pebble, through thick and thin.

Thank you,

"Kickstarter will refund eligible pledges by March 2017."

I really hope that's an example of under-promising and over-delivering. But given Pebble's previous track record...

I Haven't received my pebble 2 yet, i'm trying to contact you because i also don't have notice where it is. I want all my money back!, i pledged for a pebble 2 and a pebble time 2. I understand that you are not delivering the products but i don't have anything so i want the money of both products back.

Borrow the money, based on that success, make the case to Fitbit for the sale, then don't deliver the products to the backers that went out on a limb and supported you. I have been a backer and developer since the original Pebble. This sucks. You could have made the fulfillment of the promised (and delayed) equipment part of the Fitbit deal, but you didn't. I won't buy any more Pebbles or Fitbits for that matter. Dead to me.

    4. Jesse Brown 3 minutes ago

This is terrible news. I hope Fitbit is watching all of these responses and makes adjustments to their plans which will make the Pebble user and developer community happy. I also hope the Pebble development team is left intact and can continue their work.

For us is a very sad day... we miss Pebble a lot.

...and by the way, I will never buy a Fitbit in my life.

      Pebble never dies!!

This is incredibly disheartening. I've had my original pebble for almost 3 years now and I really was looking forward to the time 2 as my replacement. Also was backing the core because it would've allowed me to record GPS and run with music with my wired headphones instead of the crappy Bluetooth ones that break every 3 months. I hope someone else picks up this idea and makes this product because I've been waiting for it for years. I wish the pebble team the best but I won't be buying any pos fitbit products that break constantly. Here's to another three years with my pebble original.

That's not fair! I want my CORE! I've patiently waited for my core for months! I gave you money! I did my part!

Fitbit wont make a Core. They wont take chances. They will kill everything pebble related. They just bought out the compitition and it worked. Good for them. Good for you.

But we, the backers, THE PEOPLE THAT BELIEVED IN YOU AND SUPPORTED YOU are left in the cold. No Christmas present for us.

The risks section of the campaign claimed the Time 2 was practically complete. Apparently the creators of related campaigns were told they were actually in production recently. How do those things jibe with what we're told here?

I can't express other feeling that I'm not happy by not getting the promise of the reward and really upset.

      Project was funded. Simple.

It's not the money, it's the sensation of just being kicked from something we felt part.

This is not the way you treat persons you trusted you in a project.

      Bad, bad pebble.

    14. Kathleen Gordon 8 minutes ago

For those looking for an alternative, take a peek at the Vector smartwatch. Up to 30 day battery instead of 7-10. A bit bigger and heavier than the Pebble, but my boss has one and it looks like a decent alternative to me.

    21. Henrik Wejdmark 8 minutes ago

      Hi,

You ask us to take our love to Fitbit, but then took a dump on your customers by not honoring already closed deals and promised deliverables. You also hint that Pebble services will be shutdown in the future.

      Why?

Are you intentionally trying to piss off 100k+ customers?

As I will now have to find a new smart watch, rest assured that it will NOT be a Fitbit device. Your care for your customers (organic or acquired) is appalling.

      /Thank you for the fish

@Tev: "Now I'm left with the options of an Apple watch thats expensive and has to be charged every few hours, or an Android watch which is a clunky experience."

For what it's worth, if you're an iPhone user the Apple watch has capabilities beyond Pebbles that somewhat mitigate the extra cost, and the battery lasts a day or two depending on how much the watch is actually doing; you don't have to recharge "every few hours."

There is great responsibility with building a company, a product, and a community of intense relationships that are all formed around the company’s vision. What is disappointing to me is not that the products won’t ship (yes, that does sting) but more the fact that total mismanagement seems rewarded in startup culture. No doubt Eric Migicovsky will retreat back to venture capital-land as some have reported and why that is acceptable is beyond me. This is indeed reality, Mr. Migicovsky, not an episode (as you recently retweeted). You built trust, but quickly threw that trust out the window. The inability to deliver is the least of the problems that should be focused on here.

The trust built within the developer community and the customer base couple with how that value isn’t even accounted for in this situation is really what angers me. An underdog mentality was fostered within the customer and dev base. The concept and product was great, but what made it more valuable was the notion of inclusion and a implied us vs. them mentality. We, as customers, wanted Pebble to succeed and happily supported the company, products, and people even when the relationship appeared one sided. Sadly, probably too few of us “Pebblers” wanted to admit that.

As for the acquisition that has been reported on and now confirmed: Can anyone really believe that there was something in the deal that Fitbit didn’t have or couldn’t do themselves (not to mention actually delivering on)? Clearly, there’s probably more to the story here as it looks like the debt settlement and OS are the key points of the acquisition.

For those with great ideas, with real potential for great products and companies, trust is earned, not a guarantee. If anything, I fear for the companies that might be associated with Pebble management moving forward as they may have been able to earn trust in the past but clearly did not value it enough to maintain communication and respect for the customers that are the only reason some of us get to do what we love for a living.

P.S. Update #17’s tone is not only completely bullshit but also demeaning to your customers. I’m guessing your PR team went into overtime on that one wondering how we can make people still feel “ok” after being swindled. I can only imagine the thoughts that went around the table putting the release together. “Hey, maybe we should put more photos the team and some hearts and some handwriting, I bet they'll love that."

You asked 1 million and got 12 times more. If that is not enough to keep company, then I don't know. If you knew about possibility to be sold before campaign, then you shouldn't launch campaign in a firs place. I'm disappointed. Fitbit is doing shit, but they'll make smth good with you, I'll buy. Though not much faith in that...

    30. Maurizio Barbella 10 minutes ago

You would have to keep commitments with supporters.
You should have respect for the financial commitment of supporters.
Just as you have decided to close Pebble honestly you have to repay supporters immediately.

    41. Dan Moskovitz 12 minutes ago

This is bullshit! You raised a ton of money on our faith in you and the product and then parlayed that user base into a buy out. You must have known your business model was failing before you started the Kickstarter, but you USED US to get your buy out price and company sold. You took advantage of us and I am truly offended, disheartened and pissed off.

This is sad. The campaign became nothing but a way to get a 9 month interest free loan from your supporters. I was expecting to get my first Peeble gear set and develop software for it. I was specially interested in Core, which now won't see the light of the day. At least we'll get a refund, but an open communication about it throughout the last few months would have been appreciated. Refunds should be processed immediately. To be required to wait for 3-4 extra months just leaves your supporters unsupported...

December 7th, 2016 is a day which will live in infamy...

Really, Pebble? You couldn't negotiate ANY continuing development for expectant supporters? Are FitBit such a$$holes that they want to throw away all of these potential customers? Because, with this announcement I am surely not inclined to support or purchase any FitBit products that may emerge from the Pebble IP acquisition.
