United will have to pay Italian striker's release clause

According to the Daily Express, United hold an interest in Torino striker Andrea Belotti but will have to pay his £84 million release fee. Belotti recently signed a deal that keeps him at the Serie A club until 2021, and this clause is there to deter interest from potential suitors.

Bayern defender admits he was 'close' to joining United

Mats Hummels became the latest player to move from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich in the summer, but his career could easily have followed a different path. The Germany international was targeted by then Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal in the summer transfer window of 2014, as United approached the market in scatter gun fashion.

Hummels, widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe said: "Yes, very close. There were talks, several times in the last few years. I had offers from England or one of the three big Spanish clubs. But nothing got close like from England. Van Gaal wanted me but he wasn’t the only one. It is difficult for me to play in England now. I’m 28 next month and I’ve signed here for five years."

United in four-way tussle for Serie A defender

Roma will listen to offers for 23-year-old defender Antonio Rudiger, with the Daily Mail reporting that four of England's biggest clubs are after his signature. Jose Mourinho's desire to add another defender to his squad is one of the worst kept secrets in the Premier League, and Rudiger's age justifies a substantial transfer fee.

Jose Fonte is odds-on to move from Southampton to Old Trafford, but the 32-year-old would be another short-term solution. Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are also interest in Rudiger, however.

Although Roma manager Luciano Spalletti is understood to want to keep hold of the 23-year-old, the club may be forced into selling Rudiger.

Rudiger found himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week after he was racially abused by Lazio left-back Senad Lulic following a heated Rome derby.

"Rudiger was provoking us even before the game. Two years ago, he was selling socks and belts in Stuttgart. Now he acts like he's some phenomenon," said Lulic.

"It's not his fault, really, but the fault of those who are around him. They haven't taught him good manners."

Fonte linked with compatriot Mourinho

Fonte is understood to be unhappy on the south coast after it was revealed his club failed to inform him about a £9 million bid from Everton during the summer.

With the Portuguese clearly unhappy at Southampton, people have been quick to point to the fact that Fonte and Jose Mourinho, the Manchester United manager, share an agent in Jorge Mendes and thus linking the two parties.

Reports in Portugal, meanwhile, have added fuel to the fire after saying Southampton were willing to let Fonte leave for £5m.
