Why do people care so much about comparing these games? They're very different games trying to accomplish very different things, and there are very valid reasons to prefer each over the other.

[–]BellsBeerBestBeerTeam Triss 35

Because people are desperate for validation.

Because Skyrim was at the vanguard of RPGs breaking into the mainstream and represents the "le open world" formula most games these days try to follow because it makes money.

Witcher is much more heavy on writing, story and lore and is more of a happy accident despite the overall trends.

Skyrim isn't a terrible game, but people that value narrative power over "emergent gameplay", let's play potential and modding are still salty and see Witcher as a "this is a real next gen RPG" moment.

Says the man with "Team Yennefer" on his flair /s

No but seriously, I agree! It'd be great if we could apply this logic to the waifu war.

Most people who don't enjoy The Witcher is because they want it to be a new Skyrim, expecting it to let you build your character from scratch, cast a billion of spells, fight with a lot of different weapons, and screw around the world without caring if there is a story in the game. Basically, they expect it to have a world belonging to them rather than to the story, so that they give up the game with about 2-6 hours of playtime and then make a 5-10 paragraphs long negative review on Steam attempting to testify how these 2-6 hours will reflect on the entire 200-400 hours of the game by praising more for the qualities of Skyrim than objectively telling what's not good in The Witcher.

Not to mention one of them is over 5 years old while the other one is a relatively new game with completely different game mechanics. Different games. It's like comparing cod 5 to battlefield 1.

They're both good games calm down

Witcher 3 is definitely the better game with better storytelling in a better designed world. But Skyrim offers great customizability with among the best modding experiences available on pc.

is it really customizability if you always end up as a stealth archer?

the illusion of choice.

Stealth archer?? This isn't Fallout. Two-handed warrior, or GTFO. I'd even settle for a one-handed warrior with a good magic repelling shield.

No matter how often I play Skyrim or the number of play throughs, I will end up being a Giant Nord running around with a two handed battle axe lol

Wtf is with witcher fans getting so hot in bothered about people not listing witcher as their favourite game of all time?

I prefer watchers story, but (and please don't hurt me) I like the world of Skyrim more. I thinks it's the fact that I'd actually like to live in the world of ES, whereas living in the world of the Witcher would decrease my chance of survival intensely. Also it's quite depressing. (Unless I live in Toussaint, I'd be cool with that)

You're welcome to prefer either, but both worlds are pretty fucked politically. Depending on your race and location in Tamriel the chances of discrimination is really high and there's a lot of conflict not to mention the Oblivion Crisis and the dragons attacking towns in Skyrim.

If you get upset because someone likes red sauce (ketchup) and you like brown sauce then you have issues.

Enjoy the sandwich, regardless of the sauce.

That depends. Would the Witcher be red or brown sauce?

That's like comparing Michelangelo's Statue of David (Witcher 3) to a bucket full of LEGO (Skyrim). The Statue of David is a masterpiece, and there's no doubt about it, but the LEGO can be used in a multitude of creative ways (like mods for Skyrim). Both have their merits and both can be enjoyed in entirely different ways and for different reasons. The comparison is pointless.

Hahaha I get what you're saying but it still sound like you're taking a side despite the point of your post when you use "Michelangelo's statue of David" and compare it to "a bucket of Lego" I feel like Skyrim may have pulled the short straw with that comparison

Everyone will say things like this when Elder Scrools 6 comes out. And again another good RPG game comes out... Period

I enjoyed the hell out of Witcher 3 and I absolutely do like it more........ but now on my third playthrough it feels a bit stale. The fact that it tells Geralt's story means it just doesn't have the same replay value IMHO. With Skyrim, I can be anyone and do anything... the replay possibilities are endless. To some people, that counts for a lot.

They're both high fantasy RPGs but I gotta say they're still far too different for comparison.

Fighting in Witcher is much better, if you're used to playing a swordsman in Skyrim, like I do. The other day, I sliced someone's body in half. Never was able to do that in Skyrim...

...Not every game has the exact same combat system. And I've played plenty enough of both games.

I love them both for WAY different reasons. I connect more with the story and characters of W3, but I see Skyrim (and other Bethesda games) as a virtual vacation. I'm playing the SE of Skyrim now and totally fell in love with it again. Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, but Elder Scrolls has a special place in my heart.

downvote me all you want but

The Witcher 3 - storyline, graphics

Skyrim - gameplay

Both good games, depends on what you are comparing between them.

In Skyrim you definitely have more freedom in Skills and development of your character.

In Witcher you just have a badass character no matter what you do, you are ALPHA and you are fucking awesome. Some people can't take that. BUT you are forced into the Witcher's job and story.

Some points are objective facts: Witcher got better Storyline, better stories on sidequests, far more realistic "war" world, better Soundtrack, better graphics (well it is far newer game), bigger map, both games got the worlds best DLC's, both are on the top of RPG's, skyrim got more freedom in character choices, witcher got better romantic's

Some other points are just subjective: atmosphere, some people will like this children-fantasy in skyrim more than brutal and dark war-setting in Witcher.

I really love both games, but Witcher is far beyond Skyrim in any matter for me. I wasn't into Witcher from the first moment, I had a break a long time and didn't touch it, but when I really got into it, it persuaded me that it's the best game ever made. Never had such an experience before.

Just my point here, before Witcher 3 persuaded me I was like the Skyrim-people saying that never again I will get a game with such nice snow-mountains and harsh world.

I've only recently began playing Witcher 3. I'm at Lvl 4, I think, and I just went back to Velen after doing some side quests in White Orchard. It's a good game but I haven't really been impressed thus far. When will the game "click" for most people? I'm guessing Velen and WO are the least impressive areas since it's at the beginning. A friend of mine said, "Wait until you get to the big city....".

It's always a question of how deep you wanna dig into the feelings of characters in a game and how you are experiencing their pain. If you are more the player for the surface, then maybe it won't "click" that hard for you. But you are in White Orchard, well "tutorial" map.

Follow the quest in Velen, there will be some nice stories on sidequests and also the whole mainquest around the bloody baron is very impressive.

Afterwards you get to Novigrad, the big city, there are a lot of good quests. The most impressive area, maybe not for quests but for beautiful countryside will be Skellige, after Novigrad.

Cool. Tutorial Map; good way to explain it. What's the best way to level up? It felt like forever to get to a measly Lvl 4. I'm starting to get a handle on equipping Geralt; recently realized all the skill slots and mutagens stuff. A very big departure from my beloved Fallout but still a nice change. I'm enjoying it so far, I just haven't reached that level of appreciation for it that I see many other gamers have for it. I'm sure I will once I get out there more.

On my Velen map, I see TONS of boats. How important is travel on water?

Skyrim is filled with disjointed stories, undeveloped characters, instill zero emotional involvement in the player, has inferior graphics (even comparing the remastered version to TW3), and frankly I thought TW3 had a better combat system, better crafting system, and I preferred the skill tree in TW3. I'm not saying that I don't like Skyrim, but TW3 just beats it hands down in every category as far as I'm concerned. However, if you're really into mods I can see why Skyrim might trump TW3 for you, but just taking it base game to base game if someone say they like Skyrim more than I know when it comes to entertainment that person and I have very little in common.
