Just got it and already 106 hours on record. Few games can touch the Civ series for value for money.

Absolutely. Funemployment. I felt bad using a meme in the image but it captured how I felt perfectly. I spent the first 50 or so hours playing on the easiest difficulty because this was my first time playing any Civ and I was learning new things up to that point and still am.

I find that King is the sweet spot of challenge whilst still being fun. After that you are just robotically following a strict build order which is anti-fun IMO

Also I use the following to improve the game:

Better AI mod - Really improves AI combat tactics etc

No cheating AI mod - removes BS bonus for AIs

Less Warmonger Hate mod - Exactly what it sounds like

Quick turns mod - massively speeds up turns

Civ VI Diplomatic mod - way more diplo options including vassalage

Info Addict - load of hyper useful charts etc that help with diplomacy.

Those sound awesome, especially the last one. I'm currently running integrated graphics on an i7-6700K, those don't bog your system down do they?

I thought I had this game figured out when I bumped the difficulty up to Prince, NOPE. I found out that expanding too fast will screw you up, I had -20something happiness and was infuriated with "barbarians" spawning in my Civ and pillaging, it took me forever to figure that one out. Now I'm currently playing as Germany and I'm preparing my forces for an invasion of China, America, and Sweden. I'm going to do what Hitler couldn't and dominate. Or get my ass kicked.

I also learned the hard way that you can't be friends with everybody. In one game I had the US and Germany declare war on me, but Russia was in the way. The US slowly crept toward me, taking Moscow, then Novgorod, and we made peace as the US SAM were on my border.

This game is surprisingly immersive for a digital board game, the music, the audio of people screaming as you bomb a city. Why didn't I buy this years ago?

I like that your play style is "you know, I feel like Hitler didn't do quite enough"

My first save I played as Georgie boy. I played to learn, then ended up teaming up with Persia to invade Denmark because they were causing problems. Declared freedom as my ideology and invaded anyone who disagreed with me, got bored and stabbed Brazil in the back (had good relations with them but he became a bit of a dick) then just took the rest of the civilizations. Now I'm doing it for real on a decent difficulty.

If you want to mix things up, try a Babylonian one-city run. Focus science, great people points for Great Scientists, border expansion to make the most of your city. One of my favorite games.

"Put your fucken back into it Hitler" - /u/HollowCostsInc (probably)

Exactly, if Hitler were a commander you could use alongside Bismarck, Bismarck would be the disappointed uncle with a fuck-it-I'll-do-it-myself attitude.

Not really, they don't really add anything extra for the system to handle, they just tweek things.

It is highly addictive isn't it? I still get the big happiness deficits sometimes, just a case of knuckling down and riding it out, and not expanding too fast.

I particularly love the diplomatic intrigue; my favourite game involved forming an alliance with France and crushing our foes only to be backstabbed and have him drop an atom bomb on my capital. Unfortunately for him, I had anticipated his treachery and had 3 nuclear subs off his cost. My anger was great but my vengeance greater...forcing him to be my slave after the mushroom clouds cleared was just the icing on the cake.

Haven't played in a while but I think the mod is called Perfect World 3. It really improves the map generation so there will be like mountain ranges and resources will be in reasonable locations as well. Its one of my favorites. Also there is a mod that allows forts being built to have a 1 hex square of territory around them. So you can claim land without building a city. Good for war and claiming resources.

You can be friends with everybody. It just so happens that every decision you make will make someone mad because it helped someone else in some way. One thing I can say is that your troops will always build faster than the AI, no matter how big their army. My greatest feat was fighting off the top 2 in the game (Rome and Shoshone) all at once on a moment's notice. Trick is just to have a strong navy; their giant army doesn't mean shit when you shoot down all their troop transports.

But yea, I actually suck at this game. I'm getting my ass handed to me by England in the colonial scenario. Thought I could take out their first settlement before they got big. Nope.

The Shoshone were the dickheads that got all hot and bothered because I chose Freedom. The shoshone were the biggest country and I cut those fucks down and showered the civilians with liberty. I'm really enjoying the diplomacy now that I'm getting the hang of it. Currently I have a ton of infantry and pretty much no Navy, just an ironclad, and Austria has carriers and great war bombers. Well, those don't mean shit when you don't have any cities!

I'd highly suggest the EUI mod (most everyone plays with it I think) it essentially takes a lot of the info that's hidden away in menus to the forefront and makes city management MUCH easier. I would also recommended the NQ balance mod for single player, it makes some balance changes that are really nice.

Personally I have mods that remove the unhappiness from having multiple cities and from having people living in your cities. It always felt strange that because 6 people live in my capital that my people automatically want my head on a pike.

It's one of the few things I think civ 6 does right with having the cities be unhappy if they have more people than they can handle instead of just having every pop be unhappy all the time simply because they exist.

Hey bro, can you hit me up with links for better AI in civ6? Im kind of a newbie and dont know which ones are best

[–]Thank_You_Love_You 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

If AI don't cheat they are way too easy even with the better AI mod. It's already pretty simple to catch up in science on deity.

Yeah that's my problem... I smash the AI on king, but everything gets pretty bullshitty mechanics wise if I go much higher difficulty wise.

I do like the civ games, but their AI just doesn't touch the sense of walking amongst giants that you get with EUIV's ai.

Does Warmonger fix Indias aggression? Also do the Aztec stop bum rushing you?

I strongly suggest playing on prince, even for brand new players. Even if you lose you'll improve much quicker for it. And playing under prince gives you a lot of unfair advantages that can cause bad habits to form. Glad you're enjoying the game so far!

Oh yeah, bad habits were formed. I just had units laying around the world doing nothing, it took me a long time to figure out they cost money. I did develop a decent attack strategy, just from trial and error.

Pro tips - try to build your first city in the first 2-3 moves, preferably on top of a hill and close to a luxury. Also preferable but not as much, next to a river, next to a mountain, or near a natural wonder.

Tradition, patronage, rationality, order.

Poland, korea, babylon or arabia.

Scout, monument, shrine, worker.

Get 4 settlers out, preferably by move 60. Bring total cities to 6-8, with the rest being through conquest or whatnot.

When you get a pantheon, make it so the buff adds faith.

Papal primacy and feed the world as religion buffs.

Get the early game down and then you can auto glide to victory by playing ai against ai.

What I don't understand is how people make cities "only for gold" or "only for growth." Doesn't that leave you with some potentially really shitty cities? And what if you make a military city and then expand? Now your military is super far away.

Interesting idea, not one I've done myself, but I tend to think its best to try to keep cities within 5-6 tiles of the next closest one (unless theres some very significant strategic benefit to doing otherwise). If you keep your cities relatively close and kind of as a buffer around your capital, I think you should be able to protect against the AI. I've defeated as many as 15 enemy units attacking one far out city at once because it was well placed, in hills or jungle or whatever to reduce movement, and with just a ranged unit in the city and a castle. The AI's attacking is retarded.

How do you play AI against AI?

Pay AI to attack each other, in order to keep them in check and keep them from building up armies too large.

Paying them would be expensive.

Not as expensive as having to defend yourself and go to war with one or two of them at a time.

Say you have 2 AI's that have domination victory preferences to one of your sides. You suspect both are amassing armies but you prefer to focus on building your science or economy. Pay one a small bit to fight the other, keeping them both occupied so you can build up, and eventually getting sufficient defenses so you can wreck the dumbass AI on defense, then negotiate to take one of their cities at a time.

I was asked for like 10,000 gold and a plethora of other resources by one Civ to declare war. I'll give it a try when I build up my population and get some more infrastructure.

I usually get AI war each other with the price of 1 luxury resource. Depends on the civ probably, as well as their military power, and the relationship they have with the civ you are asking them to kill.

get your economy in order and you'll have gold to waste. Eventually I get so much that people get pissed at me for not giving them some to help them out so instead I just pay everyone off to fight with each other.

My favorite is still civ 3 for some dumb reason. Picked it up at 5 below for like 3 dollars. Best $3 i ever spent besides the time i spent $3 on the orginal Deus Ex.

Nah, if it's your favorite because you like it the most then that's not dumb at all. But hey, I like the Expendables movies and the fifth season of Game of Thrones.

I liked the Expendables. Sure, it was cheesy but i genuinely think it got a bad wrap.

They aren't trying to win an Oscar, the movie knows what it is and doesn't take itself too seriously. They're badass action movies, nothing more.

Oooohh, that reminds me, I need to reinstall the original Deus Ex.

You can play with your friends too. So you will likely never see daylight again.

You shouldn't feel bad for using a meme, this is the intended purpose. You used it perfectly :P

I have to stay away from Civ V. EVERY time I play I'm like "hey self, let's go to sleep at midnight like normal...." "hey self, it's 6am, time to get ready for work...FUCK!" Any other game, I can stop....

Just you wait for the almighty "CHOOSE PRODUCTION" bug to come in.

Garry's Mod 287 hours for $2.50 and I know people with far more hours than me in it.

True, but both Factorio and any game by Paradox (EU4 in Particular) can easily top the Civ Series (it's not uncommon to have >1,000 hours on record for EU4 and still be learning things).

and here I am, happy i snatched GTA5 for $20

I got GTA5 for like $8 when it first came out. Traded a guy from China who could buy for ~$30. He wanted a copy of payday 2, ($30 full price) which I sourced for $6 + some csgo skins.

You should start a video game trading hedge fund with them skills

I'd be happy with that if I didn't already have it. At least they didn't inflate the base price before putting it on sale like last time.

I thought it was $35. Was that the most recent Steam sale?

You've just sold your soul to the devil

If the devil grants me this much fun then save me a seat in hell.

Have you tried xcom?

Do you mean the game or the squad in Civ?

The game, its really good. I choose playing it over civ alot.

Doesn't work for me anymore, I have quite a few mods on it, reinstalled it dozens of times.

Now it doesn't work :(

There has to be a reason

well....yea.

Just don't know what, I get to the first mission then just bugs on me and crashes

Thats really odd, have you done a integrity check?

yup.

I just cba tbh. I already beat the game and I keep failing now so I have no incentive to play anyway lol

I haven't played the second xcom, but the first was great. I'd recommend it. Sort of a squad based, turn based combat game.

105.5 hrs last two weeks.

Damn son.

Played for literally 16 hours one day. I feel so unhealthy. I haven't played a game for that long since Mafia II like 5 years ago.

Don't worry. I've done that more times than I'd like to admit.

You should try multiplayer with a friend. Say hello to entire weekends of 16 hour days!

I did the same shit. Civ, EU4, Age of Empires. Those games suck you in.

I used to think I was a gamer...

Is it football manager level addictive?

It has the same "just this one more thing" aspect in spades. The difference is that the games eventually end. Maybe that's analogous to a season ending in FM.

But it takes more than 8 hours to finish a game in Civ, no? the game ending tends to be when I look up and say "What have I done".

I wouldn't know I've never played that. Pretty addictive, I'd say.

Assuming a full-time job, no commute, and an average of just 6 hrs of sleep per night that's over 60% of his remaining time, haha.

A 45 minute commute and 8 hrs sleep brings it up to 86%.

My guess is there's zero commute time to his mom's basement.

Oh dear God please tell me that sale is still going on!

There will be the Christmas sale here in a few weeks

I couldn't find any deals. It was all just like 5% off farm simulator and shit like that :(

I got incredibly lucky. I didn't know Steam was having a sale until I opened it up and just window browsed. Since I don't have a GPU yet I thought I wouldn't buy anything. Nope.

Cant tell if OPs username is about good bargains or the extermination of 6 million Jews

Oh shit I just realized my username is actually fitting in with my current Civ game. It's actually what I named my company in GTA online, I thought it fit in with the GTA puns.

Funnily enough, in my current game I'm gearing up to invade Poland after I'm finished with Austria.

I was like "That's a great bundle! I should go pick up the pieces I'm missing!"

So I went to go do that thing and realized I had all of it already. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's Steam for you.

I go through cycles of binge playing Civilization for 50 hours over a weekend and then deleting it for half a year. It sucks.

Ahh the old binge and purge, aka gaming bulimia.

[–]Thank_You_Love_You 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yeah the game is fucking amazing. I only however spent like 60 hours in the first 2 weeks, which for me is outrageous. The game is addicting and so good.

Just a heads up, King and Emporer are like the sweet spot where you can have any start with any civ and still come out on top. Immortal/Deity are pretty dependent on good starts to win a game.

[–]Xiplox 1

It just depends on your experience level. Some people can beat deity easily with every civ and most every start. I personally can beat immortal consistently with a bad start and a random civ.

I was able to get Brave New World for $1.24 since I bought the rest before it came out. Yay smart Steam sales!

Man I love Steam and PC gaming.

As someone who works every hour that God sends, but really wants to play Civ 6, and cannot justify the cost for the ten (maybe) hours I may actually get to play it, is there anyway to get it cheap like this, or can I only get Civ 5 like this?

I have read that ten times and cannot work out where the full stop belongs. That sentence is too long man.

r/Civ welcomes you. Your Mindset will change, you'll start seeing Hexagons everywhere. You'll tell yourself that this isn't a problem and go back to playing Civ. You body will start to change, but that's natural. Soon you will get hard to images of Petra hills and City State snipes. Don't fight it. Embrace it. Soon your best friends will be the 43 leaders of the Civs. This too is fine. Eventually you will discover Mods and the addiction will truly set in. Say good bye to your free time my friend, because it's all going to go away, One turn at a time.

Just saw your edit. I saw hexagons a few days ago and it freaked me out for a minute. It was like image burn on a tv. Germany is currently surrounded by petra and I'm attacking a civ that's surrounded by petra and a great wall, I'm at half mast.

Is there a way to make civ v more friendly to a warlike play style? The penalties for attacking and conquering cities are so outlandish that it's borderline impossible to actually achieve military victory - at least that was my observation when the game still held my interest. I had to dedicate so much of my infrastructure to making people happy because of the conquest penalties and your conquered cities NEVER really acclimate to your rule.

Maybe I'm just a dinosaur still too hooked on smacx, but civ v didn't really feel right.

And then Gandhi gets nukes...

it was a $1.75 in the summer

The whole bundle?

I'm 99% sure. I already had all the games and I bought it to complete the DLC because it was so cheap.

I got it for 9.99€ on sale once, and I've spent so many hours of my life in it.. IT'S AWESOME!

[–]Rzham 2

I gave this game a go twice.. I just could not figure out how it works and couldnt fully get into it. :/

It took me a while, that's why I still haven't gotten further than 4 hours into The Witcher 3. Information overload. I opened the Tech Tree for the first time and literally leaned back in my chair thinking "What the fuck, I have no idea what I'm doing." Now I understand the UI pretty well, which was the biggest hurdle, second only to actual game strategy which is an ongoing improvement.

Welcome to the One Last Turn society, please take your ticket.

The fact that there is this much DLC shows the state of the industry in general, I know its a business, but games are designed to make the most money instead of just being a good game.

Now I feel like an idiot for refunding it.

I realized I would never play Civilization V since it's not a game I'm super into, but I got it because of the absurd price reduction.

I bought the same thing!!! Great investment indeed!!!

WHEN WAS THIS SALEEEEEE? I have most DLC but I want the rest.

I do this too often where i end up playing only like 1 maybe 2 games of the entire bundle. Still, it was 99 cents!

After reading the reddit I went it got it too :)

so cheap i bought it twice

Don't they sell this at like £0.99 or something during sales?

I'm not sure, it's the first game I've bought in over a year.

105.5 hours in last 2weeks.106 hrs in total. Makes sense

91%??? How? In the US for me it says 67% only making it $50.

On the 23rd it was $12. I feel like a gave a lot of people blue balls posting this after the sale, sorry!

Reminds me of When I gambled on Lord of the rings online, with their founders account. Pay 200$ outright and get a lifetime subscription and never pay again, instead of paying 14.95 a month like most mmos were at the time.

I was so hesitant, I mean 200 bucks was a lot of dough and I wasn't even sure if I would play for that long. Ended up playing for 7 years... It was a great game with really fun pvp.

7x12x14.95= $1255.80 -#200 founders fee = 1055.80 saved lol.

If only they had not completely broken that game, Still have the founders account and it is still accruing turbine points. I think last I checked it has like 12,785 turbine points. Because after it went "f2p" they gave us turbine points as founders every month. You also needed VIP to pvp and that was all I ever did really was pvp.

You can buy 23k turbine points atm for 200 dollars, have about half that already just sitting around wasting =3

Shame, you could have gotten it on Bundlestars a month or so ago for 8 bucks! I literally re-bought the entire game just to have all of the DLC. For cheaper than I could have bought all of the DLC.

Definitely! I love Civ V and one of my favorite things about it is how easy it is to pick up and get right into. They have sales like this all the time.

I have more hours spent in EU4, but it's so hard for new players to overcome the interface on top of having to invest a small fortune into all the DLCs. Just took a look and it's $250 for all of them at the moment. Not that they're all necessary to play the game, but it's hard for a new player to know where to begin and I hate for people to lose out on a game's full experience because of what's essentially a paywall.

How did you get all that at such a steep discount? Would love to pick all of this up for 12.27

Sid Meier's humble bundle was a damn good day.

daymn, sad i missed this

can someone explain civ 5 to me? I own it i just don't get it/ am not good at it

Damn it I just checked now and it is CDN$ 131.85 for me right now :(

I bought Civ 5 a couple years ago. Didn't play it until about a month ago. I never really understood the just one more turn just one more turn. Yeah I've played turn based games before. it isn't that hard to stop.

Holy crap. Started Playing Civ V and next thing I know it is 4AM and I work at 7AM and I'm telling myself just one more turn.

I'm too lazy to check steam right now but is the sale still going?

I also bought this...I figured damn that's a lot of savings for all that, but on the other hand I've never played a civilization game before...but the savings I figured I might play it someday so fuck it.

I can't buy games anymore. I have over 150 in steam and keep buying g them, installing them and never playing them. I have played maybe 10 of them.... steam sales and humble bundles did this to me.

I have heard great things but don't have 45 min for a tutorial to forget what it taught me next week when I have time to play again. Consoles are the same if not worse with system updates. I have a 400 dvd player, a 300 dollar backup, and a last gen of both dvd players....

dang man, you missed it like 2 or so weeks ago. The civ 5 pack was on sale for ONE dollar on steam

Just PCMR things.

I have never played the Civilization games, never had the greatest urge, thought nothing of them.

When I went on Steam after Thanksgiving and saw the seemingly typo of a sale, I couldn't not do it. Haha. One of the best deals I have seen in a good long time.

[–]WOW_THATS_BEAUTIFUL 2ポイント3ポイント  (5子コメント)

As someone with a lot of hours on Civ V.

Don't buy CIV VI. It sucks donkey ass and Civ V is FAR, FAR better. Keep your money in your pocket.

So does your mom bring food to the basement or..?

She uses one of those laundry elevators, the stink is too bad for her to come down here.

Hah, I raise you CSGO for 15 USD at full price and ridiculous hours in it.

I got csgo for 3$ on a sale and have like 1000 hours in it. Also paladins + smite which are free and I have like 1000 hours in thise aswell. Also got css from trading and have like 1000 hours in it. Oh btw I have a problem

It's Baba Yetu time, fellas.

I also just bought that. Does anyone think civ 6 is better than civ 5 with all DLC?

I like Civ 6 more. It needs polish, but is fun as hell.

can somebody explain me how the multiplayer mode works? can you play against strangers online or just against friends? how would an online multiplayer work when the other guys arent online?

I tried online, there were only a few servers that I saw and when I joined I got kicked immediately. I probably just don't know what I'm doing because there were 40,000+ people in game when I tried it.

You really need a group of friends to play with. There are groups you can join to find games

It doesn't. Everyone has to be connected at the same time in order to play. If you are at war with someone, then you and that person has turns sequentially. If not, you can actually take turns at the same time.

When did you buy it? I go on steam now and the bundle is $50 (which is a big saving, but not as nice as yours!)

How would you recommend this game to someone who hasn't really played a Civ game (I played Beyond Earth a bit but didn't know what to really do). Is this a good Civ to learn on?

I've only ever played this Civ but I'd say from what I've seen, yes it's a good one to learn on. It's similar to Risk, it's a digital board game.

I saw the recent DLC sale and picked up what I was missing. The sad thing is that I owned Civ V for ages and had never played it before. I haven't played a Civ game since Civ 2 and I'm really enjoying it so far (though Barbarians can be annoying in crucial early turns).

I turned Barbarians off. It kinda feels like cheating, but I'm playing with 41 city states and 21 other Civs on huge. I didn't realize that the DLC installed when the game was bought so I thought I was trying vanilla when I first booted the game. It seems like it wouldn't be nearly as fun without it.

the advisors in civ 2 were awesome

i also remember stacking like 50 units on a single tile before attacking a city

good times

How long was this sale going for? I've been trying to get a good price on BNW for quite a while now. :(

I think it lasted a few days.

Dang, I need to pay more attention to sales.

I got lucky, right place right time.

I can't remember exactly, but I think I nabbed it for less.

Yeah I wanted 6. Saw the deal and went hell yeah! Even though I have exams I've probably put in 30 hours in the few days I played.

why the christ couldn't you have posted this 2 weeks ago?!

It was on the Steam sales subforum but I didn't know how great it was then.

lol I went through tons of black friday/cyber monday sale lists and didn't EVER come across Civ V :'(

Still better value than CS:GO skins.

Fantastic small corner meme my guy.

[–]Rixxer 0

See you in a few years! Don't forget to eat!

HA! I've actually thought about how good of a weight loss program this game is. Sedentary is a whole other issue.

Sorry ive never played civ before, so what game is the most recent one and which ones about to be released?

It's worth at least half that.

No amount of DLC can fix CIV's atrocious AI...

Why is there so much crap that you have to buy in order to play that game? I loved civ games but that just looks like they are milking the shit out of fans while providing as little as possible in return. Most of that could have just been a expansion pack or w/e instead of individual downloadable add-ons. Also how'd you get it for $12?

Right place right time. I feel like I'm spamming this, I just happened to be browsing Steam sales, with NO intention of buying, and came across it.

How much is Civ V? I've heard so much about it and want to try it out, I hope it's not too expensive

Base game is $30 right now, but I can't view the DLC bundle price for some reason, it's significantly more. Wait for another sale, should be one soon.

should have spent an extra $1.10

Where is civ vi earth at? ):

How on earth did you get all of that for that cheap? lol
