Talk among yourself. Been a rough week and we need each other. Remember this is a setback..., not the end.
Thanks guys and gals. You are awesome. :D

We gotta start looking at the bright side folks, at least now no one will be able to say any longer that Hillary Clinton is establishment anymore. Everyone knows there's nothing worse than being part of the established political powers and now she no longer is. So she can now be judged on the merit of her ideas instead of the connections to other politically successful people she has. But for now Donald Trump and his "basket of inexplicables" as Bill Maher called it is the new establishment.
Yes, Trump and his team of crooks and crackpots (Christie, Gingrich, Carson, Palin) is now the established political power of the most powerful nation on earth. I can't believe this is really happening but yea thanks Bernsters, hope it was worth it. You preserved your moral purity. You really stuck it to "the man" huh.
No more evil "banksters" now right? Ohh... wait Dodd Frank will get repealed instead of fixing loopholes in it.. oh yea. But no more neocon warmonger KILLARY, right? Ohhhh yea Secretary of State Newt Gingrich thinks the US is already at war with Iran and is losing it. Oh and that deal preventing them from even having any kind of nuclear energy? Yeaa ripped up. Well, a nuclear-armed theocracy won't be that bad, right? Or how about two nuclear-armed theocracies, cause with creationists Mike Pence, Sarah Palin and Ben Carson in the government, you're gonna get it.
So with that, I offer you this.
[–]RognikI'm not giving up, and neither should you 3ポイント4ポイント5ポイント 23日前 (1子コメント)
Don't blame "Bernsters". The vast majority of us voted for her (as I did). And although some voted 3rd party or didnt vote, almost none of us voted for Trump. Trolls on the_dipshit don't count.
You might want to start by blaming the demographics that actually voted for Trump. Or you might want to skip the blame game altogether, because it isn't very helpful. We need to work together and prepare for 2018 and 2020.
[–]wbrocks67 5ポイント6ポイント7ポイント 23日前 (0子コメント)
Also, Russia won. They wanted to elect Trump and they won. The DNC hacks, the Wikileaks hacks. They got what they wanted, and no one seems to care. Also, #ThanksJamesComey

What does everyone think HRC will do from here? Do you think she'd run again? Personally I don't (she'd be 73 by 2020, this will be her THIRD time, i don't know if any person could handle that).
I just hope his isn't the last we see of her. If she wants to go on vacation for the rest of her life, I completely get it. At the same time though, we need a fighter like her in our government.
[–]karthLove & Kindness 4ポイント5ポイント6ポイント 23日前 (0子コメント)
She has lived in an amazing life. If it is rest that she wants I will support her. If it is to keep fighting, I welcome her by my side. If it is to make lots of money by making, what turned out to be innocuous, speeches I hope she negotiates for a higher rate than she got last time. :-)

How do we reconcile this?
A woman who was the most qualified to handle the job, spent her life in public service, and was poised and presidential lost this election to an orange monster with no experience who has horrified millions of people and crucified nearly every demographic in America.
Where do we go from here? In 8 years the level and standard of what a president should be has done a complete 180. There is no standard of grace for a presidential candidate anymore. You can basically say or do anything, include mocking disabled people and admit to SEXUAL ASSAULT, and we will still vote for you in. I honestly don't even know what to say anymore.
I saw a picture of past presidents with Trump at the end and it's just... surreal. How we let this happen I'm not sure I will ever get over.
[–]IfFoundReturn2Tumblr 1ポイント2ポイント3ポイント 23日前 (0子コメント)

[–]karthLove & Kindness 2ポイント3ポイント4ポイント 23日前 (0子コメント)
For a moment I did think to lose hope for America. But I am happy to say that it was a passing moment. You can take comfort in the fact that the popular vote went for Hillary Clinton. You can take comfort in the fact that most college educated individuals win for Hillary Clinton. You can take comfort in the fact that most young voters went for Hillary Clinton. You can take comfort in the fact that more people are being college-educated all the time, and the younger generation will displace the older one, in time.
But above all this, take comfort in this. We are still America. That has always come with it's good and it's bad. But no matter how dark the next four years becomes, have no doubt about several things. I will stand by you. There are literally millions of Americans who will stand by you. America has lived through such darkness before, and we have found our way into the light, as we will do so again.

Yeah about that. When people bitch about the protests, remind them that if Trump were a real leader, he'd unite everyone instead of causing unrest. You don't see Putin's people rioting in the streets. He's a much better leader than Trump.
Then watch them go mental.

Democratic swing voters just didn't want to vote for her so they either didn't come out to vote or just assumed she would win, that's all there is to it. She wasn't a strong candidate. Hopefully blue will have something better to offer in 4 years.
[–]wbrocks67 10ポイント11ポイント12ポイント 23日前 (2子コメント)
Well she was a strong candidate. She won more votes.
I also blame the 3-5% in many of these states that voted 3rd party. Even if even 0.5% decided to actually vote for a real person to win, she could've won.
And don't give me that "strong candidate" BS. Trump might have had the bravado but logically he was the worst candidate to be presented in our history. People voted for personality and feeling over facts and policy. That's what it came down to and it's a disturbing indictment of where we are as a society.

The most worrying state is Pennsylvania. Her Philadelphia margins were very healthy and she even did better than 2012 in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh). Turnout wasn't the issue there.

My little town saw more Republican votes since 2000 and he won 2/3. Rural rat vs country mouse syndrome
From PA here -- I figured she would win by county (Montgomery) but I was shocked at how big she did -- by 20 POINTS! Her margin was huge here. I think in PA there was solid democratic turnout in areas where it usually is, but the rural areas had people come out of the woodwork more. Plus obviously a few Dems deflecting to Trump.

Someone compared the pain of this loss to mourning a death and I think that's kind of true. I keep having these moments where I'm hit with unbearable thoughts and a wave of grief rushes over me.
We elected the first African-American president in 2008 and the very next person we made president was the birther conspiracy theorist who most loudly demanded to see his papers. Seeing him yesterday next to Obama and shaking Obama's hand and knowing that pictures are being taken and that's a part of American history now...
It makes me so angry.

[–]tripunctataThe Revolution Continues 2ポイント3ポイント4ポイント 23日前 (0子コメント)
I think I mourn the loss of the values in our nation. That's what it seems like. That "economic anxiety" won over working together to make sure everyone thrives. It's not just "my candidate lost boo hoo" - it's that she stood for something larger than herself (justice, feminism, togetherness, community, hard work, ambition) and he was on the other end of that spectrum (division, discord, hate, fear) and Americans let the latter win. They let it in, they chose it.
So I get it. It's not a simple election between 2 candidates. It was a choice between 2 ways to live.

I'm waiting for the President-elect to calm the fears of those who did not vote for him. So far, he has done exactly nothing. As president, he has to live with mostly peaceful protestors. Instead, his first reaction was to blame the media and question their first amendment rights.
Hillary Clinton conceded the election and called for a peaceful transition of power. Obama did the same.

You know, don't even play their bullshit. Trump spent a solid year making a satan of himself. He has, with his own mouth, said enough to justify blocking his every move. Don't let them keep you on your heels like they did in this election. Cut through the deflections, lies and rhetoric, never apologize for yourself or your candidates and focus squarely on denouncing that piece of shit. Drill it into minds. Repeat phrases like "Deadly Trump" and "Greedy Trump" and always label him a racist and satan or at least put the words near his face in photos. Like they did to Hillary. Show them that when they say you should be respectful to him. And if they say the difference is he's president and she isn't just agree to show him the same respect shown Obama and call him a muslim terrorist kenyan who founded ISIS.
Fight on, brothers and sisters. No more going high. It's time to fight fire with fire. They wanted us to be less PC. Let's give it to them.

This is a gross misrepresentation of what that person was saying. It's quite clear from what they said he viewed Trump as the lesser of two evils, not "sunshine and roses" . While I wouldn't say you're being a professional victim as that person claims you are, you're definitely giving me that vibe with your reaching attempts at twisting their words and drafting a narrative that simply isn't there.

Thinking about the future of the Democratic Party, I've realized that the centrism of Bill Clinton simply doesn't have the same electoral power as it once did(despite winning 6/7 votes) due to the increased polarization of American voters. Despite putting forth one of the most qualified and experienced candidates, who could run on a record of 8 years of success, benefit from a hugely popular president, against the worst presidential nominee in memory, there was too little energy or inspiration to produce an electoral victory. This is shocking, horrifying, and devastating, and shows that we must embolden our campaigning and rhetoric in support of the working class, women, minorities, and all those historically targeted by the GOP. Although moderation in actual governing remains beneficial in some areas, we must push further to the left.

Centering the marginalized is what Hillary did. It is ironic that people are now saying she should have returned to the original Clinton strategy.

Is anyone else scared as shit about the fact that in days since the election, Hillary and Obama had to come out and say things about Trump being "encouraging" and supporting him. But Trump has done zilch about uniting the country, which is HIS job, and has only doubled down on protestors.
He's not going to pivot, he never has. If a bully hits you 99 days and then promised he won't tomorrow, is that compromise? Come his presidency, when the Republicans hits us with 100 bills that takes away our rights, is not passing 1 of them considered a compromise? Where do we draw the line?
His idea of a pivot is "I never respected your president but that's because he's corrupt, now worship me."

It's laughable to hear Ryan claim that Trump has a mandate when his combined margin of victory between the rustbelt states (MI, PA, WI), the states that guaranteed him a victory, was only something like 100,000. And of course Clinton won the popular vote and is projected to win it by at least 1 million once all votes are finally counted.
Obama won a mandate in 2008 and 2012: sweeping electoral vote margins, true majorities of the popular vote, most votes of any candidate and incumbent in history--but Republicans refused to acknowledge it. And now they're claiming Trump won the mandate, so Democrats better suck it up? lol.
Democrats have a right to vigorously filibuster and obstruct anything the GOP or Trump tries to do. As our friend Mitch McConnell said after Obama won the presidency, making Donald Trump a one-term president should be our number one priority.

You have to take yourself out of the funk, put that in a box, and look at this from the outside. I think if you do that, you'll find a legit interesting story. Is this a demographic with staying power? Will pollsters adjust to try and get a better gauge on how they feel? To me, the most interesting question is if the Democrats can make a legit attempt to re-connect with this group.
If we can do that, I think we'll be in for good times 2018 and 2020.

how do we reconnect with groups that abandoned us to the GOP because they felt we were corrupt?
[–]Danie2009#ImWithHer 1ポイント2ポイント3ポイント 23日前 (3子コメント)
Corruption was never the issue. Its about the economic marginalization of entire communities in the rust belt states. I recommend reading books like "a memoir of a family and culture in crisis" by J D Vance, if you want to understand those lower working class whites that voted for trump..
[–]ademnusI Voted for Hillary 1ポイント2ポイント3ポイント 23日前 (2子コメント)
How were they marginalized by a man who repaired the economy the GOP destroyed?
[–]Danie2009#ImWithHer 0ポイント1ポイント2ポイント 22日前 (1子コメント)
I didnt say they were marginalized by Obama...
[–]NDubbaYaBad Hombre 2ポイント3ポイント4ポイント 23日前 (3子コメント)
Corruption wasn't the only issue here. If you look at exit polling, some of them felt like they got a raw deal from the Obama administration in these 4 years. According to ABC, 36% of those living in rural areas felt worse off financially now than they did in 2012. Look at that in comparison to suburbs, 28%, and people living in urban areas, 20%. It's a big difference. If you look at other exit polls, you'll see a similar trend too. Washington Post has a graphic detailing exit polling from various demographics. You'll see something similar to ABC's poll. Those who felt that they were worse off in these 4 years under Obama tended to move towards Trump especially those in rural areas.
These are people who have a big disconnect with urban areas and feel like they're being left out of the future. I don't think corruption was the primary catalyst. I can't link it, because fuck I forgot where I saw it and I don't blame anyone for thinking I'm talking out my ass here, but I remember seeing exiting polling showing that the character of the candidate didn't do much to sway voters. Emails and pussy grabbing didn't do it for people. I think this was primarily a change election and rural voters went with someone they thought could bring about change for them. That person was Trump. I think Democrats greatly underestimated how these people felt. Like everyone else, I didn't think it was to this degree.
Knowing that I think that the Democrats can go back to the drawing board and make up plans to better include this demographic. If they do it, I think they can find success here.
Well part of the problem is ignorance, because the GOP has no intention of making their lives better, and these people bought into the lies that Republicans spewed. I think we need to keep that in mind too.
[–]tripunctataThe Revolution Continues 1ポイント2ポイント3ポイント 23日前 (0子コメント)
Exactly this. I am trying so fucking hard to think reasonably about this so that we can strategize and win the future elections and I think that if I was a single white mom in rural Kentucky with 3 or 4 kids and we were impoverished and I had no job prospects, I would probably (and I am gritting my teeth as I write this) not care as much about who else it was going to hurt as long as I voted in a way that could help me take care of my children and myself. I might even, deep down inside, feel a twinge of regret that I was hurting someone else, but maybe looking at your kid's hungry faces makes you bury that regret. I have no fucking clue. And it's not like he who must not be named had any plans, but that's not what they wanted. They wanted someone to just promise security and he did.
It is not right that they ignored all of his sexual assault and his racism but I think a future candidate needs to focus on their economic concerns somehow and not at all cater to any racist bullshit they might harbor. Then, they'd have no excuses and we wouldn't either.

Because they weren't a strong enough demographic to carry her to victory in the right places. And white rural voters unfortunately were strong enough this cycle to lift Trump past 270. So that is the story.

I don't disagree with that. But I guess in a sense those narratives have been validated because they proved relevant to the result of the election in a way that black women voting for Hillary did not.

Its a bad idea.
But I think supporting it is a great idea. Its how trump and the Republicans just won: obstruction, saying your opponent isn't illegitimate, constitutional fuckery. That shit clearly works and Dems should do it, starting right now.

Agree on methods, disagree completely on the goal. The election has happened. We need to resist the far-right congress as much as humanly possible.

Fuck that. If we're going to have the Electoral College, then let's fucking use it. If there's a reason she can get more raw votes and still lose the election in spite of it, then there's a reason we have faithless electors and it's for this very exact purpose, so let's fucking use them.
That's where I'm at. If the EC is there for a reason, then let's goddamn use it.

One thing that is making me feel at peace is the fact that she will never be abused again....The media truly abused her like no other.
I truly want her to completely heal (it is gonna take time, probably a year) , write a book , do lots of humanitarian work and enjoy her life with her family.
I am still so sad , she deserved this so so so much!
It did often occur to me that Republicans what do everything they could to make her presidency hell. Even allowing for her ability to work across the aisle, and the possibility that she could indeed win them over, you still have the whole alt-right swathe of society who'd be gunning for her every day, and plenty in the media gleefully crucifying in her at every turn. In that sense, she's well out of it.

All these people again remembering the electoral college and protesting it, and im sitting over here in hipstertown now remembering being against it the entire time
Including having the unpopular opinion that if the majority of the nation voted for Trump but the EC voted for hillary, i'd still be calling for its repeal. Even if it works in my favor, it's still an unfair system and I can't accept it.
[–]Jessica_AriadneYas Queen! 0ポイント1ポイント2ポイント 23日前 (0子コメント)
A lot of people are against the EC but like anything that only comes up once every four years, there are limited windows to focus public attention on it. It's one reason it will never be abolished, esp if the electoral count starts going back with the popular vote for a few elections.

BernieBro turned Clinton supporter chiming in.
Just emailed the NELP, National Partnership for Women and Families, and our state AFL_CIO chapter for some guidance in getting paid maternity leave, paid sick leave, and a minimum wage increase on our (admittedly conservative) county's ballot next year. Seeing the levels of support for these policies among conservative voters has me feeling incredibly confident that it can be done.
Went to the local Democratic Party's meeting to try to get more involved at a local level, but they moved this month's meeting a week ahead for GOTV. No biggie, I'm meeting with some folks from there in the next week or so to start scheming.
I've got a Republican president-elect, who knows what with the Supreme Court, a Republican Senate, a Republican House, a Republican State Legislature, a Republican State House, a Republican County Commission, and a Republican City Council.
I don't have a choice. I have to fight for my neighbors now. I have to fight for my coworkers now. I have to fight for my family now. I have to fight for my community now.
And I've still got a lot of fight left in me.
awesome. don't let that fire burn out. We can't be moping around like some weaklings. The Republicans certainly wouldn't. They would be foaming at the mouth, instigating, getting change, if we had won. We need to do the same. We gotta be the change we want to see.

there seems to be some disagreement on how right it is to suggest perhaps the election process was not conducted honestly... but i maintain that i do not believe that there are enough people in america to vote for this person to be president of the united states... and certainly not half of all who voted... and certainly not 60 million people.
in other words, no way did that many people vote for him.
[–]RplfkLove is Love 0ポイント1ポイント2ポイント 23日前 (14子コメント)
That many probably did. It's the people who couldn't vote because of voting laws that are the problem.

I have no idea what they want but they wanted his view of America more than Hillary's. I think understanding that all the many perspectives are valid needs to be the focus of dialogue. They seem to think we are equally off and misguided.

well at least we are not throwing protestors to the ground and kicking them.
at least we are not advocating sexual assault and ridiculing people with disabilities...
at least we do not threaten and possibly implement our political opponents with prison.

There with you.the problem is I live in a small town and there is life after this election. They are good people. They serve n the fire department. They've come to my rescue. They accepted me and my gf. They've dealt with an influx of city second homers who have more than them and treat them like they are hicks. And because there is so little diversity they don't have a lot of experience with diversity and being old school they hate change. In order to get along we don't talk politics.
But I hate them right now. I hate them for pretending to accept me only to turn around and go along with an abusive bigot conman all the while trashing Hillary. If they act out I will not back down. I have Christmas with Trump in laws and my gf has given me permission to let it rip and she will back me. Friends, family, strangers I can afford to lose. Neighbors...not so easily.
