Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education Pick Said the Goal of Reform Was to “Advance God’s Kingdom”

We already know Donald Trump‘s nominee for the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos is a disaster for church/state separation. Her support for vouchers decimates public school systems while giving taxpayer money to private, often religious, schools.

And that’s just the beginning of her allegiance to the Christian Right.

We already know her family has given a lot of money to Religious Right organizations like Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council. We’re now learning that her goal in the world of education is to “advance God’s Kingdom,” according to comments she made several years ago at a gathering of Christian leaders.

POLITICO reports:

In the interview, an audio recording, which was obtained by POLITICO, the couple is candid about how their Christian faith drives their efforts to reform American education.

School choice, they say, leads to “greater Kingdom gain.” The two also lament that public schools have “displaced” the Church as the center of communities, and they cite school choice as a way to reverse that troubling trend.

“Our desire is to be in that Shephelah, and to confront the culture in which we all live today in ways that will continue to help advance God’s Kingdom, but not to stay in our own faith territory,” she said.

Her supporters will argue she’s just speaking in Christian-ese to an audience of believers — and all she’s really saying is that school choice, much like opposing marriage equality, is an extension of their beliefs, not a method of proselytizing. But there’s no doubt that using taxpayer funds to pay for someone’s religious education is a huge part of what she wants to do.
