This implies that only 20% of men are seen as desirable by women and will be able to get easy sex and that the remaining 80% of men have very limited appeal to most women and those men have to fight tooth and nail to get ANY female attention.

Is the situation really that bad for 80% of men?

The 80/20 rule mainly applies to casual sex. Women really do find only 20% of men inherently attractive, but usually settle for utility reasons anyway. It's #1 reason for the divorce epidemy.
