This implies that only 20% of men are seen as desirable by women and will be able to get easy sex and that the remaining 80% of men have very limited appeal to most women and those men have to fight tooth and nail to get ANY female attention.

Is the situation really that bad for 80% of men?

The 80/20 rule mainly applies to women's minds, not their actions. They really do find 80% of men unattractive but usually settle (in their minds, they don't really settle objectively) for utility reasons anyway.
