I would find the text more embarrassing than the pink. Hell, I didn't know those came in pink. If I still worked construction, I'd request that because I want to be pretty while I work.

A prison in Arizona uses pink jumpsuits also for male attendees, and I just don't see that as demeaning or a punishment.

dammit it's SALMON

It's lightish red darn it!

There's a name for that you know.

It's pink.

I hate you guys.

It's been so many years and I still read it in their voices :D

I think it's actually "faded salmon" but truth, years since that episode and the nomenclature has stuck.

I'm colorblind. I didn't even realize it was pink until this thread. Definitely would not bother me.

Don't get yer panties in a wad there Barbie.

EDIT: Context for anyone not getting the reference.

Salmon is a bit more orange-red than this. This is more like a pastel bubblegum.

A prison in Arizona uses pink jumpsuits also for male attendees, and I just don't see that as demeaning or a punishment.

It's only a jail, and they wear pink underwear, not jumpsuits. They also have to live in tents in the desert in like 110 degree heat.

They also have to live in tents in the desert in like 110 degree heat.

How the fuck is that even legal? We can abolish the death penalty as cruel but we let people live in the desert? Was this in Joe Arpaio's county? I've heard about some of the shit that dude makes his inmates do.

Actually, I was wrong, it gets up to 145 degrees inside the tents. However, this year they measured it at a cool and refreshing 129 degrees.

And keep in mind, this is what we to do our citizens before they are found guilty of any crimes.

"The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons." -- Fyodor Dostoevsky

That's a quote from famed Russian author, Fred Durstoyevsky.

I did two tours in Iraq as an Infantryman and volunteered for it. It gets about that hot there. Its incomprehensibly hot.

Each of the 1,400 inmates in Tent City has been convicted of non-violent crimes, such as driving under the influence.

this is what we to do our citizens before they are found guilty of any crimes

It's still not right, especially considering they're non-violent offenses, but they aren't innocent people.

I could see this as reasonable for people convicted of violent crimes because it's uncomfortable and sucks, but it's survivable and they take precautions to avoid heatstroke. Tent City is only used for sentences shorter than one year, but that's still pretty harsh for most non-violent crimes that can land people in jail.

i thought "cruel and unusual" punishments were forbidden by one of the amendments.

If you do it often enough it's no longer unusual...

It's still unusual if it's not the common practice in most jails isn't it?

Still cruel. Its still unusual in that no where else in the United States does that.

Yes, this was in Joe Arpaio's county. It was Jo Arpaio's jail that this happened in. It was his idea.

Arpaio is out of a job come January. The new sheriff, Penzone, wants to shut down Tent City.

My boss has postcard from an ex-employee who was an inmate there. The postcard explained why he stopped showing up to work and even thanked my boss for letting him "keep his job" after his release.. My boss didn't hire him again and keeps the post card in his office.

I had a friend who grew up in Phoenix and when he was 17 he got caught with weed in his car and ended up getting a DUI and one of his penalties was spending a weekend in the tent city. To save money they use vending machines for the commissary so they let you bring in cash to buy sodas and snacks. He said he bought a spice blunt (the fake weed) from another inmate with the money he brought and got really high in jail. Also, for some reason they made him put a breathalyzer ignition thing in his car during his probation despite the fact that his DUI was not related to alcohol. It sounded like a kazoo every time he started his car.

I once spent time in a jail designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which was classier, but I didn't get any blunts.

Yup I had to get a breathalyzer installed for Marijuana dui

When I was on probation for weed possession, I wasn't allowed to drink. Like, what the fuck?

I love when the law blatantly doesn't make sense. I got busted for weed in Arizona so I decided, fuck you guys, I'm going home to California. So I get my probation transferred over to California where I have a medical marijuana card (this was before AZ had medical). So there I am, on probation for smoking weed but I am allowed to continue smoking weed legally (but no alcohol or I go to prison!). I'd be talking to my PO and he'd ask if I'd done any drugs lately, I'd say yeah I smoked weed, he'd ask why, I'd say I did it because I felt anxious, he'd say oh okay. They didn't even bother piss testing me once because what's the point when they already know I smoke every day. We all knew we were just wasting time and money and none of it made sense but we had to keep doing it because rules are rules.

I hate when im high and have to much BAC.

In Victorian times pink was the masculine color.

I'm still a fan of pinks and purples. they are quite regal.

I'm very fond of gear and tools the other guys won't walk away with, at least unknowingly.

I have some speciality tools on my service truck that aren't really worth any money, but would totally euchre me if I didn't have them so I painted them hi viz pink so i don't leave them at a site and nobody walks off with them :)

Some specialty tools are rare enough that no matter how expensive they are there is no resale market for stolen ones in medium sized cities... Except the guy that just got ripped off. Gotta love seeing your own stuff Craigslist. Or getting that call/text from some random number that starts "Hey I'm ____ I got your number from your boss because I accidentally drove off with your _____" and finding out you and your stuff and in different counties.

Euchre like "Erk" I didn't know it had actual spelling to it! Big fucking upvote to you if that's right.

Yooker! Hahaha like the card game. To be euchered is to be SOL in my local vernacular.

Huh. I think I like your spelling better, I didn't even get the word with his but I already l always thought it started with "I"

Yeah I thought it was "irk"

It is.

It's possible he meant what he said. Euchre is pretty popular card game in the Midwest and to be euchred is to be denied your tricks acting calling trump. Also pronounced like you-ker

"Euchre" is pronounced "Yooker" and its a card game lol. A quick google search confirms that "Irk" is the correct spelling. I was always curious about it too.

[–]Dizmn 1

I read it an "eunuch", and, well, that's not a verb but I can see where they're going with that.

Bright pink paint is way more more effective than "not yours" written in sharpie.

Okayfine. Yours will be covered in glitter.

This guy is onto something. "Did you steal my screwdriver?" "No" "Why are you covered in glitter?"

I was watching Cops

This guy's clear. Watching Cops does make people sweaty glittery.

That pink is pretty ugly though.

And i own multiple pink shirts

Actually, red was the masculine colour and pink was the boys' colour. Blue was the feminine colour and light/powder blue was the girls' colour.

I realized that after I wrote the post. I was thinking about children at the time actually. But I was on the bus and I didn't care enough to edit.

Thanks for setting reddit straight. I mean...not that diagonal is wrong.

High heels and stockings/tights started as men's fashion.

I thought that in Victorian times everyone wore black.

Only when they were "in mourning". That was a lot of the time.

I know! Every picture I see of them is just black or some off brownish color. I didn't even realize they had color back then, I thought it was a post-WWII invention we stole from the Germans.

oh how far we have fallen

I'd much rather wear pink than orange. I always felt like the stupid orange clothes were punishment. I look terrible in orange.

No the punishment is the fact you have to live in a tent with no AC, in arizona, where temps in summer can get up to 120 and still be 100+ overnight.

I think it draws more attention to the text on the back, adding a bit the shame/embarrassment.

I like pink. I paint all my tools neon pink- easy to spot and the men I work with don't steal my shit.

My state now permits the use of blaze pink hunting gear as an alternative to blaze orange. Pretty neat, ehh??

That's Sheriff Joe's tent city. Most people don't know that you have to volunteer (as a prisoner) for tent city and you get time off for staying in tent city.

you have to volunteer (as a prisoner) for tent city and you get time off for staying in tent city.

That's really fucked up.

Why? As a form of extra punishment? The idea of being in the heat of Arizona makes me want to kill myself.

As a colourblind guy, thanks for allowing me to understand what was funny.

They would match my shoelaces and gloves. :)

Why would they even do that? Do they think that there is a guy somewhere going "I'd totally rob that gas station but... I hear the prison uses pink jump suits".

Our safety lady has a pink hard hat

She's literally the only employee that has a hard hat

My uncle went to that prison😂

All of the spare ppe on my current site is bright pink

[–]God_Damnit_Nappa 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

A prison in Arizona uses pink jumpsuits also for male attendees, and I just don't see that as demeaning or a punishment.

The more punishing thing is that inmates have to live in tents in the Arizona desert, eat shitty food, and face human rights violations because of the piece of shit sheriff in that area.

the point is, they intend for it do be demeaning (and it is-due to lack of education of a high percentage of the people in the prison system). However, they really shouldnt be trying to demean criminals if they are still trying to claim prison is an attempt to "rehabilitate" and return them to functioning society. bullying is not rehabilitation

yet he still has no glasses. if he needs a hard-hat and gloves, do you think there may be a need for the most basic PPE there is? hint (it's glasses)

Someone should give him a pair with I FORGOT MY GLASSES written all over the looky-throughy part.

They're called "see-holes," you ignoramus.

Lenses?

I never use lenses - they just get all dinged up and grease on them and then I can't see through them. Easier just to take the lenses out so I can see more clearly.

[–]Unknown_Platapus 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Easy access if you need to rub your eyes too

Nah, he'll just use his safety squint.

Safety Squint is perfect for all kinds of things!! Combine that with the Look Off To The Side method, and you can:

  • paint a little bit of the ceiling
  • put something on the grinder real quick
  • do some tack welds

Can confirm, have done all of these, and a lot more.

We had an instance of Run That Machining Program That Throws Red Hot Metal Chips.

His hair caught on fire, we were not sympathetic

What? No? There are plenty of things where you need a hard hat and gloves but not glasses.

Wildland fire fighting comes to mind. Ugh sorting garbage had this set of PPE too. Some brush clearing... Others will be thought of soon.

EDIT: relied to the wrong comment.

all of which will send shit into your eyes... glasses would only NOT be necessary if you have a shield.

Have you done any of these? The previous jobs are all things I've done for all of and at least two at a time the following institutions: the feds, multiple states, multiple counties, multiple cities, and multiple private contractors. The glasses aren't required to be worn at all times on any of those jobs or jobsites, at least not in the western United States or in Dixieland.

i have cleared brush and i have fought wildland fires. both of which i have worn safety glasses and been glad for it. the first time a switch from a brushpile hit my eyebrow or face i was glad it didn't get me in the eyeball through my safety glasses. the first time ash got in my eye, i was really sorry that i didn't have glasses on, put them on, and was happy the rest of the day.

i'm not saying you're experience is a lie, but i will say that your employers are ridiculously unsafe and uncaring for their employees. oh, you did say the feds and city/state agencies... yeah they don't give a flying fuck about you.

do you have examples? if anything has the possibility of falling on your head, there is the potential of dust or dirt or any other particulate being thrown into your eyes. you can't just say there are plenty of things and NOT give any examples..

Electricians and plumbers working on a condo work site. Hard hat required for falling objects but no need to have safety glasses.

A supervisor on a road site. Or a cop on a job-site (side note: I can refuse cops entry unless they have a hard hat)

Any job where someone works above you, Bricklayers would be a good one.

A hard hat protects you from falling objects, safety glasses keep projectile debris out of your eyes.

[–]Nolds 7

Yea. Most power tools require glasses.

The safety guys in my experience don't harp too hard on glasses except on framers with a nail gun.

Low clearance may require hardhat without glasses. So you don't bump your head on anything.

Alot of places only require a Bumpcap in those places. They are tiny flimsy hardhats that merely keep you from hitting corners and sharp surfaces with your weak cranium. They have saved me many many head injuries. (I'm 6'4" and worked in the tunnels of a factory once)

Bump caps are great in certain jobs. Definitely saved me stitches. But I'd just as soon wear a hard hat.

You wear whatever level of PPE makes you feel safe. It is your life afterall not mine or anyone else's.

Well I parsley agree with you. But some people don't think they need any ppe. So I'd say wear what is required, or more if you feel it's necessary. People not wearing seat belts is a good example.

I agree with the point you're making though.

Edit partially lol

I work in an area where hitting your head is sometimes a hazard and the work we do is sometimes tough on our hands or just dirty. We occasionally wear Helmets and gloves, but nothing is going to fly out and hit us in the eye.

Since working in construction I've developed a nagging habit of wearing safety glasses even if I'm doing work at home. It's just not worth the risk.

When I was younger I would never bother, and I think slowly (very slowly) over time it sank in how easy it is to wear them and prevent something awful and irreversible from happening.

I said that at an ad-preview discussion.

"Any time you put a hardhat on an actor, you've got to put safety glasses on. Otherwise it looks like an actor wearing a hardhat."

the uncanny valley of sincerity

Like when /r/The_Donald first showed up. Lots of people (including myself) thought it was a joke.

Well it was a joke but after about a month they started taking themselves seriously.

I thought /r/NoFap was satire for a long time and found it hilarious. Now I'm pretty sure they are serious and it's not quite as funny.

it has an extra big helping of that creepy cult thing that a lot of support groups and similar wind up with.

why? b/c they like something you don't?

I don't find it insufferable, I'm also not the person you're responding to however I have been there a few times, I check it out whenever it gets to the front page. I don't get it. It's just casual clothing? Like wear these jeans, sneakers and a tshirt and then what...? I don't really see the point of posting such super basic "fashion" that you could see anywhere, on anyone and buy from nearly anywhere. It's like the most genetic fashion sub I've ever seen.

No, because they all dress in a way that clearly is supposed to draw attention to them but simultaneously get incredibly defensive EVERYTIME someone outside of the r/streetwear hugbox gives their honest opinion on it.

Dressing up like an anime cyberpunk ninja when you are a scrawny teen has that effect.

Fuckin kids these days and their stupid clothes /s

[–]Gerden 4

It is an entire group of people trying hard to not try hard.

I see this backfiring. Instead of your employees saying "hey, I forgot my helmet, do you have a spare?" You will just get them hoping you don't notice.

Perhaps the punishment for intentionally working without it and being found out is more severe.

Or perhaps this is the punishment for working without it instead of saying "hey, I forgot my helmet, do you have a spare?"

better solution: employers provide their employees with job-critical resources. no coercion, more safety - everybody wins!

Good chance that it is provided by the employer, but the employees are expected to look after their equipment. If I left my company-provided laptop at home, it isn't somehow my employer's fault.

The job does provide it, but a lot of jobs move around, so each person is responsible to bring their assigned gear with them. If you lose or break anything, it gets replaced free of charge. So this was probably what a supervisor had in his truck in case anybody forgot their shit.

Typically they do? If you had to run spares for a whole job site you'd be out unnecessary money on extra PPE storage when the guy should have just brought it from home or left it in a local locker.

We have a single facility and we provide all PPE to every employee and every employee has a personal locker. I never coerce or make anyone feel bad that they don't have an item but I still have a locker full of spares because people wear their vests/glasses/gloves home and don't come back with them the next day.

edit-spelling

Its it a building or a construction site?

Sawmill.

Then congratulations on running a safe work environment! (I really mean this) But could you imagine keeping a locker full of spare PPE with you if you were a plumber? or contractor? I work in the demolition business and require my workers to keep track of their PPE. I provide any that they need, but since they never stay at a spot for more than a few days I cannot keep it for them.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. My co-workers often work without hardhats, safety glasses, hearing protection, and/or gloves. Company provides all PPE, and as much as you want.

Have you ever worked construction, or any dangerous jobs, or are you still in high school? It's extremely often that people are supplied with ppe and just don't use it

Wait, are you saying they gave the guy a "I forgot my PPE" vest because they didn't give him any PPE to forget?

He could be a contractor who just forgot to bring his own. We have that happen with some truck drivers that come to the plant I work at.

Ive had hard hat jobs before, & you just dont enter a hard hat area without one. Ive skated by without glasses, ear plugs, or a beard net, but not having the hat on can be fireable

Can confirm. I worked at pizza hut, and if you forgot your hat my boss made you wear this one with pins and stickers all over it. Thankfully I wore a black baseball cap anyway that just didn't have the logo so I'd wear that and hope she didn't notice :)

Obviously not PPE but just saying I have personal experience with your point :P

Yeah, but then it wouldn't hurt the company, I imagine. Risk management where I work is pretty clear that if you break a rule about PPE and get hurt, you ain't gettin' anything. So I'd imagine that if he got knocked on the head on a jobsite where he was provided with proper protection and chose not to wear it, he'd have s tough time in court.

I would forget mine all the time if I could wear such wonderful colours.

A buddy of mine is a contractor. He uses the pink hard hat for people who forget theirs. according to him they only forget once

I want a pink hardhat! But the color of our hardhats denotes job title/status. :(

Weird, my workplace (non construction) we choose our hardhats from a catalog.

I run a crew for the state. We have white and orange. Crew gets orange and I get white so I stand out as supervisor to passers- by. More so I can take the heat from any rando than a status thing.

What are you guys, clone troopers?

They used to do this to us in PE class in junior high - forget your PE clothes (all gray), no problem, here is a bright orange shirt with "LOANER" printed across the front in huge black letters. Yup, only forgot once.

What does PPE stand for?

Personal Protective Equipment. Hard hat, safety glasses, face masks. This guy has to have pink on cause regulations say you GOTTA have em on the job site, so this company loans out pink ones when you fuck up and forget. I bet it doesn't happen often.

Question: In the USA, if you have to wear a traffic vest, aren't your color choices limited to blaze orange or bright green? That is, is pink even a legal color for a safety vest?

Pink is SO embarrassing guys AMIRITE /s

Quite a few guys in the trades are sensitive about their masculinity. But really, this is more of a "ribbing from coworkers bait" than a scarlet letter

I've had to wear a pink hardhat because i forgot mine... I just sort of carried on with my day and laughed with everyone because at the end of the day it's hilarious and wasn't worn out of personal choice.

You down with PPE?

I read this as he forgot his pipe and was thinking it was a funny plumbing T-shirt

That is such a badass way to do this. As someone who works in a super dangerous environment (top 10 most dangerous professions), it's non-punitive while still accomplishing the goal of making sure to send the message home. Bravo. That being said, the second time around, you've got to chew some fucking ass.
