Some bans should not come as surprising to you. This post will hopefully help you understand when you should expect to be banned from a subreddit with high accuracy. I'll apologize in advance for the suboptimal formatting, but I don't think it will take away from the
I'll begin by linking the video that was posted to /r/kotakuinaction and the inspiration for this post. https://youtu.be/UMaaDav46gM It's not necessary that you watch it, but I'm posting it so you can see for yourself if any references I make to it are inaccurate or poorly described.
The TL;DR of the video is that a feminist game critic named Anita Sarkesian makes videos with the purpose of exposing sexism in video games. The video linked argues that all of the alleged evidence of sexism in games is reliant on the idea that the games are sexist to begin with. To simplify, the video claims that Anita crafts her premises to fit her already-formed conclusion. Conversely, a proper and honest argument is one where the conclusion is crafted by premises. The illustrate this contrast:
"I believe this is true, so therefore these things must be the case or my belief is false" as opposed to "These things are true so I'm led to believe that this other thing is or is not true."
What does this have to do with anything? Well the video concludes that Anita is ideology driven rather than truth driven. You may agree or disagree, but that's irrelevant. What is relevant isn't whether or not Anita belongs to the group of people who think this way, but that there are people who think this way.
Take for example this line from the submission rules.
Bans from /r/OffMyChest /r/ShitRedditSays /r/Blackladies /r/me_irl, /r/CreepyPMs are not post worthy.
I'll use the most obviously guilty example of this: SRS. The average SRS poster, and most certainly the majority of SRS mods believe that anything that can be construed as some form of offensive was intentioned that way or based on some hateful or faulty viewpoint. Sometimes they're even right. But I could say something factually correct such as "blacks commit murder at a higher percentage than whites in America" with no attempt to imply anything from this and the assumption is that it is racially or hatefully motivated. Everybody knows this. It is obvious, and therefore if such a thing were to happen, it would not be postworthy in this sub. The other subs follow suit.
The submission rules cover all of the obviously biased subs but there are some subs with some more nuance.
Take /r/communism. There has yet to be a country to prosper successfully under textbook definition communism. However, there are still people that believe it is possible and are hopeful that such a country will one day emerge. Having admittedly never visited, I think I can still safely assert that /r/communism is designed to be a place for these hopefuls to congregate.
Communism as an idea is ideology driven, not reality driven. If I were to make enough posts in /r/communism glorifying Capitalism and making arguments for why it is a superior model, I'd likely to be banned, or at least have my post deleted. It doesn't matter that factually, capitalism has had a significantly higher success rate than communism. What matters is that they want communism to be superior, and so their premises are selected based on their predetermined conclusion.
As a disclaimer, I'm engaging in conjecture here. I haven't actually done this and have no experience with this sub having never been. It's entirely possible that everyone in the sub is level-headed and will accept this point while still having legitimate reason to stand behind communism. But that's not the point. The point is that I would not in the slightest be surprised if this happened to me or anyone else. In fact, I'd be surprised (pleasantly might I add) if it didn't.
So I will leave you with this: I believe that posts on this subreddit should be dedicated to bans or post deletions that are or should be unexpected, such as when /r/worldnews deletes posts that are undeniably worthy of being on the sub on the basis that it conflicts with ideologue mod views. It may not be unexpected to anyone here, but it most certainly should be.
If you believe you are dealing with an ideology-driven subreddit and post in contrast to their ideas, you should not be surprised and you most certainly should not consider it postworthy.
Thanks for your time.
