Modding is like making your own burger. First you add all the normal stuff but instead of the prepackaged american cheese you add some nice cheddar. Maybe you add a better bun or season the meat better. Then you get nice fresh vegetables, none of those soggy precut ones the store gives you.

Then maybe you should add bacon.... and an egg! Oooooh I could add another patty. Maybe some more cheese! Then it gets ridiculous. Suddenly there is potato chips and macaroni on the burger. Maybe some random things you found in your fridge that you think might work.

Suddenly you realize you have to eat this monstrosity. And while you're not sure you want to anymore, you've gone through the effort of making the damned thing so you suck it up. So you try to pick it up and maybe the whole thing falls apart and you have to reassemble it. Things are constantly dripping off it and it seems like if you take to big of a bite parts of it just explode. And if you aren't careful you're pretty sure the bun will come apart at the atomic level. Despite all this it's so good that next time you decide to put those avocados and maybe some ham on it next time.

Suddenly you realize you have to eat this monstrosity.

Or just post a picture on Instagram, it's pretty much the same.

Then again, some mods just scrap everything burger related and say "Why not a hot dog?"

Why are you looking at my Skyrim mod load order?

Because these mod posts are almost exclusively about modding Skyrim to the fullest.

And just like modding, I usually like to enjoy the establishment's regular burger first, otherwise the choices I'd have to build my own wouldn't make any sense.

But sometimes you say, fuck it, and then Macho Man Randy Savage is flying around, burninating the countryside.

Mod burger looks like shit.

I'd still get the original one.

I'd experience the original one first.

But holy fuck that unsightly mass of cheese and BBQ sauce tastes good when you're in the mood.

not sure if metaphor for games or actually talking about the burger

Mod burger looks like shit.

Actually a pretty accurate metaphor if you consider it to represent getting a ton of disparate features that often doesn't make a great overall experience.

What kind of sucks is that some companies are warming up to the idea of outsourcing the patches to modders.

cough Bethesda cough

That's unfair. Bethesda did great Add-Ons for Morrrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

This is only fair for the PC interface of Skyrim, good thing we have SkyUI.

They made their game open to modding, which is awesome indeed. But the prima example of the OP I was responding to is:

some companies are warming up to the idea of outsourcing the patches to modders.

Bethesda has been known to not fix bugs for games, and Skyrim is a prime example of that. The Special Edition contains the same bugs if not even more than in the regular version and it still has the same clunky UI. The only thing they did is made the engine 64 bit, threw in some new effects like weather, lighting, water and some higher res textures.

Yeah, I kinda tend to forget how buggy these games are without unofficial Patches.

Holy moly was Skyrim Special Edition annoying for me, I have literally ran into like 3 or 4 separate bugs that has prevented me from starting quests or whatever other horrible bugs, I literally could not start the Dawnguard DLC, just because I had discovered a location on the map before starting the quest, so I had to reload a save, 20 hours of gameplay earlier

Yeah Special Edition has more bugs than the original in my experience. Just like the "regular" Skyrim I recommend installing the "Unofficial Patch" by the modding community :P

The way to solve that problem, is to bring a platter and run into the gate. Works on ps4 at least.

Yeah, but did you SEE the mod that replaced the dragons with Thomas the Train? Like, for real... You expect Bethesda to release something of that creative magnitude? /s

If the modders are properly paid for their work then this is a win for everyone really. Talented modders get recognized for their work, players get faster and often better content, and the companies can improve their businesses and the quality of their products.

Cities: Skylines did this with the Art Deco package.

They forget the part about old games where you had about a 75% chance of the game being absolutely terrible.

Thank god for quality control.

What are you talking about? All old games are good! /s

lol I'm glad someone else agrees with me and surprised I wasn't down voted into oblivion...

What is it with everyone thinking everything old is the best?

Ok... Being around gaming since the 80's, that is not entirely accurate.

Pc games used to be 5-10 hours long, nowadays they are all like 60-100 hours long, before the DLC. Console games were mostly even shorter.

Used to be 10 hours of intense gaming and different ideas, and hard as hell. Nowadays it is 10 hours of gaming and 50 hours of padding. And every game costs millions to make, so they cannot afford to take any risks. That is what I believe is killing the industry.

And DLC, usually, adds just one hour to the experience. Expansions used to be map packs, so another 3-5 hours of the same game (usually even harder).

And mods... Sometimes they genuinely add to the experience, but sometimes it is so jarring the dissonance between artworks, or even if it makes sense in that universe, that can it be mostly a curiosity and not an addition to the game. So the picture makes sense

Used to be a good hamburger (or bad, depending on the game), now it is like 10 McDonald's hamburger, without any sauce (it is more food, but somewhat tasteless and after the second it feels more like an obligation than pleasure)

Tha's a cake. A meat cake. Made of beef. A veritable cake of beef.

...

Skyrim is thus. My rig can easily do 60fps with the special edition, but with the over 100 mods and texture replacers, I'm running at about 30 when I go outside. Every time I play feels like I'm takin' a big bite of a burger like this, grease an' all.

Bacon seems like a good pre-order bonus. It's not usually required but feels like a special treat enough that I would occasionally go out of my way to acquire it. If I could pre-order a sandwich and get free bacon I would do it, and probably not even check if the sandwich originally came with it.

This is a good analogy.

Bacon is way better than real preorder bonuses. Can you imagine Best Buy just running a griddle at the register? I'd give them all my business!

Truly things were better then!

i remember playing ff7 and civ2 on my ps1

they werent 2-3 hours long ...

good times

I agree with the mod thing. It kind of ruins the challenge of the game if you add too many mods.

Star Wars Battlefront for ps4 was like the 2 pieces of bread bun. There was nothing substantial there, no story line. You got mini games with a sliver of half-assed story to explain why you're doing the mission. Oh and local PvP with a whopping selection of 4 maps to choose from. If you wanted anything else, you had to pay extra for it.

actually, it depends on the game like the witcher 3 is most similar to the then image and the now image is most relevant to games like sims 3 or any EA title released after 2005 and the mods image is most relevant to Bethesda games.

The reason why Skyrim is still super popular. I recently booted mine back up, and realized there's a lot of content I haven't completed in that game - mostly because I also installed some mods that add entirely new regions and quest lines.

I have Never in my life played a game like these shitposts claim are "gaming now".

Maybe because I'm not so stupid that I buy the same entries in the same shitty annual series year after year even though we already know ahead of time they're going to be buggy, incomplete, DLC-addled garbage.

It's amazing how good games are when you don't buy the shitty ones!

At what point is it that a burger goes from being a clean looking and tasty meal, to a giant mass of caloric, cheesy ecstacy?

and you feel with every game out there who started out development with dlc in mind and who didn't, the feeling of playing a game that needs dlc to become fun is horrible. I'm a paradox games fan, but Stellaris felt horrible because of that. Stacked early game and spacetumbleweed in the mid game.

A) That's not how it works. This is a terrible analogy.

B) The 'mod' burger looks like shit

C) This conversation is literally older than most of the kids in this topic. Go back to table-top days and all the discussion around extra expansion content for pen-n-paper RPGs. This is what the gaming hobby is and if older generations of video game consoles had the distribution network for such a market you better believe they would've taken advantage of it.
