Man, the Syair Perang Mengkasar (a Malay epic poem about the Makassar War) is great. Best primary source I've ever read. It all rhymes in Malay and sounds much better, but here's the translation so people can actually understand what it says: stanzas 246-253, a battle between a Dutch fleet and a line of Makassar cannons:

As day was beginning to dawn,

the [Makassar] officers put on their equipment.

Their weapons included spears and swords

and a great host of soldiers assembled.

About the time of the morning prayer

the warriors began to dress themselves up.

They went up on the battlements of their sturdy fort

and saw where the [Dutch] enemy's fleet was anchored.

When it was full daylight

they fired off the cannon known as Makassar's Glory;

the flames shot out like blazing rays of the sun and moon

striking terror into the hearts of the Dutch and Bugis [local allies of the Dutch] combined.

The noise it made was like a thunderbolt splitting a hill

and one of the infidels' ships was hit.

The cannon-ball went straight through one side of the ship and out the other side

scores of heads were broken.

They then fired off the cannon called The Guardian

and the flames were like lightning playing on a mountain.

The explosion made a deafening boom

and one of the silly infidels' ships was hit.

Swords and helmets were sent flying

and crowds of them rushed into the hold for shelter.

We then fired off the cannon called Growler.

One of their ships was damaged and heeled over.

Some of them cut themselves on their swords

and the Bugis went dashing around wildly.

The Iron Smiter was then fired off

and its shot went whizzing through the stern,

almost hitting one of their officers.

The devilish Dutchmen were really aghast.

Don't know how to save comments on mobile so I'm commenting to remind me to check this out later because I need to read this...

I'm really looking forward to Denial, a movie about Irving v Lipstadt. The trailer is here and it comes out in the UK in January. For the love of everything though, don't read the comments.

Not badhistory, just wanted to share this. I really like this short video on Poverty Point in Louisiana. It's basically a short run down on architectural energetics without getting into too much detail on the rates of work. I've read stuff by Kidder and his work is good. He's got a great article with Sherwood on Mississippian mound construction called "The DaVincis of Dirt". I never knew how sophisticated Mississippian mounds were before I read this article.

This other thing I wanted to share is the recent issue of SAA Archaeological Record. It's all about video games and archaeology. Since I love both, this is really great to see other academics taking a look at games beyond the simple entertainment factor.

Speaking of games, I bought Witcher 3 on Black Friday. I've never played Witcher 3 and so far it's pretty good.
