Base building coupled with multiplayer would have been a smarter move.

Send beacons across the universe to show others where you are, search for other players and their beacons.

On your own.. There's a huge planet with nothing to do on it so you can build a base to do nothing inside.

This update boggles me.

That's the thing that bugs me the most about it. Base building could be really fun in an MMO. But this? This is literally playing Minecraft offline without the ability to build amazing, interesting structures, because you'll be given a set of buildings and items that you can stick together in a slightly different fashion. This is basically Fallout 4's base building, if Fallout 4 wouldn't have a story, NPCs you can drag off to your settlement, trophies you can place in your settlement and enemies you defend your settlement from.

What if the base is capable of space travel? Like a big ship that flies through space. Is there anything like that in the game already I wonder?

Of course, you could be right and it will be shit on planet base building. But we don't know, so saying "this is" is a bit silly really, isn't it?

Of course we don't know it, but I'd be surprised as fuck if it was a space ship. I believe it's literally just going to be a bunch of art assets that you can place down and that's it. I expect nothing.

Is there anything like that in the game already I wonder?

Haha no. Agreed though above comment is arse-talk because we don't know yet. Lowered expectations is key here.

If there's one thing this entire endeavour has taught us. Lower your expectations to the point where even the most basic feature will seem amazing and we all have a stupid murray-grin 'mind is blown' look on our faces

Why would they call it "base building" if it was actually "space freighter building?"

The only way it might make sense is if every base you built was connected via portals, but even then bases don't have a meaningful place in the game's current short, repetitive play loop.

This is all speculation but suppose they changed crafting to require machinery like most other games (Starbound, Minecraft for example).

In that instance, you'd need to be able to build a base to house your equipment and even potentially have to power it and maintain it in order to craft. I'd support such a decision over being able to magically craft everything no matter where I'm at.

Well, HG has a history of intentionally making the grind longer and more complicated so that it takes players longer to get to the nothingburger in the center of the galaxy, so that makes sense.

Prior to release I had been hoping that people would meet up and make whole cities of bases across single planets. And then trade and help each other from there. Mayhaps it'll happen someday, mayhaps not. Probably the latter.

I was so happy to hear that there was going to be an update, I didn't think of that. In fact, you are sadly right...

So many poor gameplay choice in this game ! :/

Do you think he still has that shirt?

I hate that shirt now. I can't even look at a lumberjack anymore without vomiting blood.

I remember the world with all the gold. 48 solar systems ago. The one with caves full of Naughty Pearls. I might have built a house there. Lived out my days piling up the Precious. Killing the odd Sentinel. Minding my own business. Maybe I could have started a moisture farm and squashed my nephew's dreams of joining an interstellar jihad against the Evil Atlas Empire. Ah, so little so late.

If you don't want base building then there is something wrong. What needs to be done is a massive reduction to how much stuff you can have on you at once. You explore till you find an awesome place, then build a base on it, then (if implemented with a teleportation device) you continue to explore and collect resources that you then drop into your base. It creates a sense of progression to find more awesome places and drop bases on them, then take pretty screenshots.

Most of this will be meaningless if the crafting system doesn't get a massive increase in resources spent, Mind you. you will not need to store anything for later use if you can craft stuff you need with stuff in your fov.

I agree. Each player should be able to carry no more than 1 unit of each element at a time so that they can have the full opportunity to trudge slowly back and forth between identical-looking mineral formations and identical-looking bases across an amazing variety of identical-looking planets with slight color shifts!

Your missing how a good crafting system works, the resources are plentiful so you limit the access to crafting in various ways.

Have a lab that you must be at to produce higher level items but still allow the creation of basic needs at the player level. (Minecraft crafting table.) As well as implement much higher resource sinks at the high level to combat the high resource counts on planet.

Gathering the resources doesn't need much of an uplift, I like how plentiful most are, and I don't feel like I'm wasting my life away collecting them. But when an hour worth of work will unlock every upgrade in any configuration on all 3 inventories (suit, ship, meditool) it ruins the game experience. I would be fine with working on a planet for almost an hour for random upgrades. It is a light survival game, it should have a bit of a grind on resources.

Not to say that the game is not still missing glaring features, or having ones that could use a major face lift, combat being a huge one. But the addition of bases creates a foundation from which they can start that process. You don't want to forget the best planets you visit, that's the whole point of exploring them, and being able to create a home on the most epic of locations is part of that.

I for one will be trying to find a water planet with a tiny ass island and drop my base on that, create a Master Roshi home.

The only way this will work imo is if they add more meaningful items and parts to craft. I've had enough of a headache waiting around for a rare part so I can build a theta this or theta that, and I'm still doing so. I swear if I get back on and discover that I'm no longer one piece away from fixing my ship, but ten pieces-and with reduced carry weight, I'm going to be done.

And in the end all the craftable parts are meaningless barriers to prevent you from doing things that aren't worth doing in the first place.

Struggling to craft only works in games like Subnautica where each new thing you craft pushes you further towards a goal. NMS has too few things to craft, they all do nothing of interest, and they push you towards a goal that nobody wants to reach.

pretty screenshots.

are these in the game yet?

Or, you know, just play starbound, which already has all this shit.

Apples and oranges.. it's a side-scroller ffs.

What if your "house" is a freighter that can land? What if you can take your "house" with you?

[–]the_streeoverlord 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

So your ship?

No, you're reading it wrong. Your "house"!

Remember when everyone wanted base-building? Then they said they are putting in base-building. Now everyone hates base-building.

I remember actually. But it was just mentioned as one of 20s something things people were missing. But yeah, I do remember.
