There seems to be confusion that this represents some of kind of new "spam" attack and people are spreading misinformation about it. Can you please confirm that this is just miners paying for something that users normally pay for, but not a direct threat to network health?

Correct. If miners accept zero-fee transactions, then attackers could bloat the state at no cost, though the extent to which this is possible is now more limited than before the forks.

the miners would be paying the cost, and they would realize it was hurting them pretty quickly if they were accepting a lot of zero-fee tx, so it doesnt seem like a realistic attack. but i agree that it should not be a default parameter for mining because some people could be taken advantage of before they realized it.

Which variables miners do know for certain?

The gas limit max. cap.

The amount of transactions in the previous blocks.

The current unconfirmed transactions.

I mean since the eth genesis block you and gav are recommending miners what gas to set.

Is it not possible to set the client on some auto pilot mode for calculating the fee?

Currently it does not look like the fee market is growing organically through the hiccups in the network.

Geth defaults to 2 gwei; Parity defaults to 0.
