I think the basic motivation for travel, under the surface of consciousness for most people, is sex tourism in one form or another.
I am reminded of countless Eat, Pray, Love, or Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, or Under the Tuscan Sun type movies... how, ultimately, the women are looking for genetic fitness (Latin Lover, or whatnot) in some far-off place. Rich white women going abroad; black women looking to "swirl", as Sandman mentions; Chinese women moving to California; etc.
Men certainly travel for sex, too. But I see two important departures from female motivations; 1) travel is often more utilitarian for men (e.g. a regional sales manager, athletes, truckers, business trips, taking a new job, etc.), and 2) existential wondering (adventure, exploration, frontiersmen, coming of age, etc.).
I see a difference in motivation between the sexes.
For me, personally, travel is a challenge - something difficult, adventurous, spartan, purposeful with a singular destination or motivation... not "fun" per se. And not for sex tourism.
You won't find me walking on a beach, looking for my Latin lover, because I'll just assume any woman who would proposition me for sex on a beach is a prostitute, or riddled with STDs.
It's an interesting instinct I think women have - looking for genetic diversity in their own way.
Also, if a man travels for leisure and luxury - that is a beacon for gold diggers. Of course women want travel partners...
I'd rather travel alone.
As men, why do you travel?
