After seeing in the monthly town hall that we were missing some original content in the subreddit, I remembered that I was sitting on this post for a while. I hope you enjoy it, because I had a really fun time writing it.
Wtf is this
First off - why do pop artists care about the Oscars?
There are a couple of reasons, the most prestigious being the ever-elusive EGOT. Winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony is no small feat: there are currently only 12 people who have ever gotten all four (though Lin-Manuel Miranda is definitely a favorite to complete his this February). The list of iconic pop stars who have come close to getting an EGOT include Cher, Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Loggins, Barry Manilow, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Paul Simon and Sting.
In recent years, Oscar-nominated films have been a vehicle for musicians to release and promote new music (all nominated songs must be made for the film they were nominated for, see dumb rules in the following section). Last year’s Oscars featured songs by Sam Smith, The Weeknd and Lady Gaga; their album sales went up in the following weeks. Creating music for film also gives artists the opportunity to try new styles or cover topics they may not have the creative freedom to include on their contracted albums (John Legend and Common’s “Glory” and Lady Gaga’s “Till It Happens to You” are examples of this).
Other Notes
The Academy Awards have some dumbass rules about what can be nominated as well as the actual performance.
The nominated songs must all be original and written specifically for the film they are presented in – in adaptations of musicals, none of the songs from the original are allowed. Nominated songs also can’t contain previously existing work, including samples, covers and remixes, which is why Gangsta’s Paradise was robbed in 1995. Typically, the nominees for Best Song are performed at the event by the artist. I’ll highlight some of the standout performances in each decade in these posts.
Let’s get started.
Pre-1970
Pretty much every Best Song winner in this era ended up on the Billboard Top 100, but I wouldn't really call many of them pop songs. There are some good songs in this section, but I’m breezing through them because the music isn’t really relevant to the topic.
Highlights include:
Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), that movie your freshman roommate had a poster of
Baby, It's Cold Outside the classic problematic Christmas fav featured in Neptune’s Daughter (1949).
The iconic White Christmas from Holiday Inn (1942), which holds the record for the best selling single of all time.
The 70s
1972
- A young Michael Jackson performs Ben, and is completely adorable while also becoming one of the first pop stars to perform at the Oscars.
- Unfortunately, the Oscar voters went deaf this year and Ben lost to The Morning After from The Posideon Adventure.
1973
- Barbra Streisand’s The Way We Were wins and becomes the #1 hit of 1974, according to Billboard.
- Paul McCartney’s Live and Let Die becomes the first James Bond theme to be nominated for an Oscar and is my personal favorite.
1978
- Last Dance by Donna Summer becomes one of the first non-ballad songs to win Best Song. God bless those first few notes by Donna, they slay me and I am finally awake for this post!
- Hopelessly Devoted to You is the first country song to receive a nomination (it’s also the only eligible song from Grease).
The 80s
1980
- Fame by Irene Cara wins, but sounds incredibly dated next to legendary fellow nominees Dolly Parton (9 to 5) and Willie Nelson (On the Road Again). Who is Irene Cara? idk.
1981
- Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross present a simple but beautiful performance of their hit Endless Love, one of the best duets of all time according to Billboard.
- It loses to Arthur’s Theme (Best You Can Do) which is the blandest Best Song winner in this post.
1983
- The original queen of 80s bops is back… Irene Cara wins her second Best Song in 3 years for Flashdance… What a Feeling, which is possibly the most 80s sounding song to exist.
1984 - Ok, this year is stacked, but for some reason the Oscars decided to produce some of the worst live performances I’ve ever seen. If you ever hear someone complain about how boring the live performances are, direct them to this year.
- Footloose gets two nominations for the title song and Let’s Hear It for the Boy. Honestly, I forgot this film had such great bops. When Carly eventually covers Let’s Hear It for the Boy I will probably cry.
- Phil Collins gets nominated for one of his best post-Genesis ballads, Against All Odds. For some reason the Oscars forgot to invite Phil to perform his song, and instead got Ann Reinking (who?) to do… whatever this is while Phil sat in the audience and watched.
- The Ghostbusters Theme is nominated. Ray Parker Junior becomes the first man to say “bustin’ makes me feel good” on national television, but will not be the last. Please watch the rest of this performance.
- I Just Called to Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder wins Best Song. I love Stevie, but this was definitely an upset. #JusticeForFootloose
1985
1986
- Take My Breath Away by Berlin wins without much competition. I honestly forgot this song was from Top Gun.
1987
The 90s
1990
- Madonna takes Michael Jackson to the Oscars as her date. She then performs Sooner or Later as Marilyn Monroe and wins Best Song. What a legend.
1991
- Beauty and the Beast is the first film to get 3 nominations for Best Song, and wins for the beautifully animated title song that Angela Lansbury recorded in one take.
1992
- Whitney Houston’s indescribable I Will Always Love You … doesn’t get a nomination. It is ineligible because it is a cover of a previously existing song – Dolly Parton wrote and performed the song in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas . Still, the Academy Award rules are stupid, and Whitney’s version became one of the best selling singles of all time anyway.
- Two eligible songs, Run to You and I Have Nothing are nominated…
- … but Whitney still loses to A Whole New World from Aladdin.
- Whitney was R O B B E D.
1993
- Bruce Springsteen’s Streets of Philadelphia is one of the first examples of a pop artist making a song about political/social issues for a film, a trend that you will see more of in the future.
1994
- Elton John is nominated 3 times for his work on The Lion King and wins for Can You Feel the Love Tonight. The Academy Award voters love ballads, but this is one of the best they’ve ever awarded.
1995
- Disney continues to sweep Best Song with Colors of the Wind. They have won 4 of the past 5 years, proving the 90s was the best era of Disney movies.
1996
- Madonna wins again, this time for You Must Love Me from Evita. Definitely a different side to Madonna than most people are used to seeing.
1997
1998
1999 - This might be my favorite list of nominees.
- Sarah McLachlan's When She Loved Me makes me cry every time
including right now, unlike Angel, which I am emotionally numb to.
- Magnolia gets Save Me by Aimee Mann nominated. If you even slightly like Aimee's music, please watch this movie. Magnolia is a 3 hour emotional burden but it's one of my favorite movies of all time and Aimee's music is featured heavily. Everything about this film is fantastic.
- Robin Williams performs Blame Canada after the original singer committed suicide. The Best Song nominees are performed traditionally (as in no lyrical changes) and Blame Canada was the first nominee to contain the f-word, so 1999 was pretty spicy.
- After being snatched by the Academy back in 1984, Phil Collins wins the award for You'll Be in My Heart.
The 00s
2002
- Eminem becomes the first rapper to win Best Song for
The Spaghetti Song Lose Yourself, just in case you ever questioned the diversity of the Academy voters.
- Paul Simon is nominated for Father and Daughter in the underrated Wild Thornberrys Movie. This is one of my favorite Paul Simon songs - it’s so close to being sappy, but is saved by a great combination of lyrics and honesty.
2004
2005
- Three 6 Mafia becomes the first rap group to win Best Song for It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp and marks the second hip hop song to win the award. Honestly, I think this song is complete Oscar bait and sounds really bad now.
- Dolly Parton’s Travelin’ Thru performance is adorable. This song was made 6 years before Gaga, but is a less literal version of Born This Way.
2006
- Beyonce is back as Dreamgirls gets 3 nominations for Best Song:
- Listen, Love You I Do and Patience. Listen is a fantastic solo by Bey, it’s one of her most vocally impressive tracks.
- None of the songs from Dreamgirls win?? I thought the Academy loved Beyonce
- Melissa Etheridge wins instead
2007
- Falling Slowly from Once does pretty well on the charts after winning this year.
- Enchanted gets 3 nominations, but like last year none of them win. After this year, the Academy adds a new rule that there can only be two nominees per film.
2008
- Finally, another bop wins. Jai Ho wins and I hate the way the Pussycat Dolls say Jai Ho.
The 10s
2011
- Nothing notable, just that the Academy forgets to nominate anything for Best Song or invite any performers. A song from the Muppets Movie beats a song from Rio… those were the only nominees.
2012
- Adele slays everyone with Skyfall. I linked the Oscars performance because she looks stunning, completely nails the performance even through awful audio mixing and you can tell she knows all of this by her face at the end.
2013
- Let It Go gets Robert Lopez his EGOT! It only took him 10 years to get all 4 awards, which is pretty ridiculous.
- Pharell performs Happy and I’m so glad he refused to perform with minions on the stage.
2014
- Glory is the obvious winner this year, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a great song. I understand why it didn’t get more radio play, but it was definitely slept on this year.
- Adam Levine tries to make up for making Maroon 5 a shell of what it once was with Lost Stars.
- Tegan and Sara collab with The Lonely Island for Everything is Awesome, the catchiest song about Communism I’ve ever heard
2015
- Sam Smith screeches his way through Writing’s on the Wall and then congratulated himself for being the first openly gay man to win an Oscar, only to find out he was the 5th.
- The Weeknd performs Earned It and I feel like I need a shower after.
- Til It Happens to You by Gaga makes everyone at the Oscars cry. Gaga pours her heart into this performance, it’s really worth the watch.
Final Notes
I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it! I know there is a lot that I skipped over, but I didn’t want to make this any longer than it already was.
I learned while working on this that the Academy favoring ballads is an understatement. The Academy LOVES ballads, there are very few cases where they don’t win, and it explains why most of the pop artists featured in this post ended up being nominated for or winning with less radio-friendly songs than normal. The major exceptions to this are Disney songs and the 80s.
If I skipped over or didn’t write enough about your favorite song or performance, please let me know! I spent a lot of time writing this but it’s a topic that really interests me so I’m always up for learning more.
Finally, I leave you with a link to Spotify’s playlist for Best Song winners. Thanks for reading!
Edit: Discussion Question
Oscar season is coming up, what film-related songs do you think will end up on this year's nominees list?
La La Land has been getting a lot of buzz, but I think there's also a chance for a song from Moana and probably something from the Trolls. Will 21 Pilots slay your favs with a Heathens nominee?
