Sam Smith screeches his way through Writing’s on the Wall and then congratulated himself for being the first openly gay man to win an Oscar, only to find out he was the 5th.

YAAS FUCKING DRAG HIM. Really though that was a little ridiculous. You can't just get on stage in front of a billion people and claim a title that isn't yours, not even close.

edit: I'll also add that I'm a little salty because I put money on Earned It. Like actual money. A little stupid in hindsight but made up for it betting correctly on most major categories.

I was pretty neutral about Sam Smith before the Oscars, but then he pulled that off-key mess and claimed he was the greatest thing to happen to the gays? I still think he hasn't been dragged enough for that.

I'm also extremely salty about it, I got all of the major award predictions right last year except for best song.

My friend is neighbours with Sam Smith and I found him on grindr once. Can confirm he's terrible.

Story time sweetie

He had a cropped mirror selfie up, from the jaw downwards. Recognised him because of the jawline, arm hair and the tattoos on his hands.

Nothing outstandingly tragic but your typical bougie white gay, "tall, work out and try to keep fit" bio. He mentioned something about wanting to try a Sous Vide cooker.

Sam Smith is straight basura anyway

He and Ed Sheeran should do a collab lullaby album or something. J. Cole could be the obligatory rap feature on one of the songs.

I forgot how salty this song makes me lol. Radiohead's Bond theme was better in the first place and should have been used for the film instead. And I would have liked to see any other nominee get the award that night. I still love that he's proud it was written in 20 minutes... it shows.

A little stupid in hindsight but made up for it betting correctly on most major categories.

Pretty sure Vegas odds had Gaga and The Weeknd above Sam Smith

[–]Parallel_Falchion 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

It was that quote and his Howard Ashman comment which made me realize he's kind of a dick.

I refuse to accept any Sam Smith slander tbh. Y'all can stay mad.

I'm still salty Young and Beautiful was not nominated for the Oscar

It was the only song that could compete with Skyfall and I think it should've won too!

[–]chasing_pavements 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

They were in different years, though.

I really can't believe "till it happens to you" didn't win. Look, I love Sam smith (his album was great), but he made the worst bond theme song, it was boring, mellow and unmemorable. It was not even half as good as "skyfall" was.

I'm pretty sure ever reviewer just said it was an ok song, don't know how the Oscars out of all critics would think "Best of 2015"

reminder that Juicy J was part of Three 6 Mafia which means Juicy J has an Oscar

I don't see how it's dumb to require songs to be written specifically for a film to be nominated. The Oscars celebrate film, not music.

I don't think awarding music and film have to be mutually exclusive. The award does go exclusively to the songwriters (which I also disagree with), but the performance of the song and how it's used in the film are definitely important factors. The rule in place wasn't even a major decision, it was politicked into place by a salty winner.

The original requirement was only that the nominated song appear in a motion picture during the previous year. This rule was changed after the 1941 Academy Awards, when "The Last Time I Saw Paris", from the film Lady Be Good, with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, won. Kern was upset that his song won because it had been published and recorded before it was used in the film. The song was actually written in 1940, after the Germans occupied Paris at the start of World War II. It was recorded by Kate Smith and peaked at No. 8 on the best seller list before it was used in the film.

Kern got the Academy to change the rule so that only songs that are "original and written specifically for the motion picture" are eligible to win. Songs that rely on sampled or reworked material along with cover versions, remixes and parodies, such as "Gangsta's Paradise" in the 1995 film Dangerous Minds, are also ineligible.

Just an example, I Will Always Love You was completely transformed by Whitney into the song it's known as today and her work is the reason people even remember The Bodyguard, but because of an arbitrary clause added to the rulings in the 40s, Whitney wasn't recognized by the Academy for one of her best songs.

This bit of history is somewhat juicy, but mostly irritating to read... There's so many songs that have fallen by the wayside, or at the very least been completely snubbed, but then again, that's the way it goes with all awards and award shows :|

I love this, thank you.

1990-1999 literally had the best movie music EVER. I probably would've been happy with any of the noms winning. All the Disney classic songs deserve their win. Whitney didn't need to win for the Bodyguard soundtrack, she literally won that year, and the year after. Like the entire year.

Also:

justiceformadonna

She's never won an Oscar for a song she wrote - I'll Remember from With Honors or This Used To Be My Playground from A League of Their Own or Beautiful Stranger from Austin Powers or Die Another Day from James Bond.

iirc she's technically never won because the award goes to the songwriter not the performer which makes me sad bc she definitely deserved one at the very least for TUTBMP

Yep, that's correct. The songwriter is the one that wins the award, even though it's presented to the singer. The singer doesn't get any type of recognition unless they contributed to the writing.

tbh the Academy rules are complete bs in a lot of the categories, but Best Song has the dumbest rules out of all of them.

I actually think the rules are fair. If the artist singing it didn't have any contribution in the music or lyrics, why award them? They have the Grammys for that. They wouldn't do it for Original Score either and give the string players and trumpet players all Oscars if they didn't compose any of the music.

Edit: Though after reading your other comments, I can see your point. I still think the rules are fair as they are for the most part, but I think they should change it with regards to sampling, since I think sampling is a great and legitimate way to create a completely different and "original" song. Even the Grammys have changed their rules so songs with samples can be eligible for songwriting-focused awards.

I was originally only going to focus on 1990 - 1999 in this post, but that didn't really make sense, so then it become a multiple-part post and then what it is now.

All of the Disney songs are fantastic and Whitney eventually got her Oscar so I can't be too mad, but A Whole New World is the weakest of the Disney winners and doesn't hold up to one of the most iconic movie soundtracks featuring Michele Visage track 9 . I Will Always Love You couldn't be nominated but that hasn't stopped the Academy from awarding something because of work that wasn't eligible.

Also Go the Distance was the nominated song from Hercules but it should have been One Last Hope just so Danny DeVito could win an Oscar

Oh oh oh we about to fight over A Whole New World though

check the link I put for A Whole New World

ok so I actually assumed Part of Your World was the winner for Little Mermaid and not Under the Sea so A Whole New World isn't the weakest one!!!

also this is cute af

omg lol under the sea... that performance though.... it is an excruciating masterpiece.. UGH did they take all of them down?? I can't seem to find that or Xtina singing Reflection at the oscars

lmao I only put a few fake links into this, that just happened to be one of them

I wrote this a few weeks ago so I don't remember all of the other shitposts I put into this, I know I did one for Let It Go and I almost did it for I Will Always Love You but put it after instead

goddang it i am listening to I Will Alwaus Love You.. good god that is a majestic song

pre-1970 is killing it.

When Carly eventually covers Let’s Hear It for the Boy I will probably cry.

I can already here this cover in my head.

No love for Bob Dylan's "Things Have Changed" winner for 2000?

honestly, Bob probably shouldn't have beat Bjork, but Bjork has that sweet Swan Dress to look back on for the rest of her days, which is way cooler anyways.

I love you for this post! <3

I was so shocked Gaga and Diane Warren didn't win for "Til..." I remember reading that Diane was really pushing that year to finally win an Oscar after what happened with Spotlight and I think Rita Ora(?). Do you think that Linda Perry, being salty about not getting nominated for "Hands of Love", revealing that Diane played her a demo that is identical to the single to discredit Gaga had anything to do with them not winning?

I didn't include Rita Ora in this because it was already getting really long, but there was definitely some shady backstage stuff behind Gaga not winning.

It could have also been the subject matter, Oscar voters tend to hate anything controversial (TIHTY) or different (Worth It) and those were the only real competition.

Yeah, I was surprised to find out Diane Warren has been nominated 8 times and lost. The conspiracy weirdo in me thinks Linda Perry did sabotage Diane's win because the Oscars don't want any controversy at all. Kind of like how Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" was on the shortlist for an Oscar nom but didn't get it after voters were sent anonymous news letters saying the song wasn't eligible for the award. I don't know for sure if Linda Perry's tweets really did it, but I was about 98% sure Gaga was going to win after her performance and was GAGGED when Sam Smith won instead.

Anyway, I read Diane wrote songs for Adele's 25 that didn't make the final cut. BUT Adele did say she still liked the songs, which could honestly be bullshit to not burn a bridge with Diane, who knows maybe they could put the unreleased songs on a soundtrack. All the old people in the industry love Adele, so she could give Diane the credit she needs to finally win.

I mean this is what you get when you associate Rita Ora with something. It somehow loses any and all relevance, prestige, substantialness and whatever else claim it ever possessed.

Well go in, henny!

I don't know how Rita Ora keeps getting gigs, like she's the new host of Top Model. Wtf does she have to do with modeling? Joan Smalls, Selita Ebanks, Coco Rocha, and Chanel Iman would've been perfect as the new host to usher in this generation of Top Model and would've probably been paid the same as Rita. Unless Rita was like "I'll do it for $100, unlimited craft services, and no residuals."

a friend and I discuss her all the time, because we're so fascinated, intrigued, horrified, flabbergasted and bewildered as to why she gets hooked to so many of the most relevant things in pop culture, yet she's still so irrelevant and a nonentity. Like, her daddy must have a 51% share in literally everything from Warner Brothers to Univision to Adidas to Tiffany's to Unilever to Comcast and AT&T and everything in between. Or she sold her soul to the devil

Probably working for cheap and offering sexual favors? I know there was a rumor that Rita was messing around with Jay when at Roc Nation, but she must not be a very effective schemer because she got out of her contract and only get bit parts.

My Heart Will Go On wins. 15 million copies sold. Karaoke staple. Nothing else to say about this one. I've never seen Titanic.

The shade Madonna threw though

[–]chasing_pavements 4ポイント5ポイント  (2子コメント)

Aside from the songs you mentioned, I think Sia might get a nomination this upcoming year. She has written a lot of original songs for films this year, so I think it's inevitable. My guess is that the song from Zootopia will get nominated. (Edit: also it doesn't hurt that Sia became an official Oscar member this year).

Also not that anyone cares but when Adele won I was in heaven, it was the Grammys 2012 all over again. I remember the mix being bad but she nailed the last note anyway so no biggie. Her Oscar speech was cute too, it was short but sweet. I'm still salty that she missed her opportunity to get closer to the EGOT this year when she lost the Emmy. I would've been fine if she lost it to Beyoncé since Lemonade is a masterpiece, but not even Bey won it 😡

Adele is so down to earth whenever she wins anything. It's like she doesn't believe it mixed with a bit of why did I win? I'm trash plus still gonna brag about this tho and not really I don't brag.

I didn't know Sia made the Oscar members list, that's super interesting.

Adele's Oscar performance is one my favorites! Thanks for making me check back on my post, the link I posted was taken down so I updated it. The audio mixing really was awful but she still sounds fabulous.

A POST WHERE MY BOY, PHIL COLLINS, IS RELEVANT!

That Oscars performance was absolutely horrid. Legendarily bad. It almost ruined that song for me, but Against All Odds is magic, so I got over it. I think he deserved the first one, but got one later anyways, so I can't be too salty.

Phil's got an Oscar, when will your fave?

fairy godmother slayed the fuck out of that song

watch Justin Timberlake's worst song Can't Stop The Feeling win this year :(

I don't think it can be nominated. If I'm not mistaken, isn't there a rule against songs that are commercially released before the movie premieres? Plus, I'm betting that CSTF is going to be the song played in the credits, and I'm sure that credit songs don't count.

It's eligible, unfortunately. The song was written specifically for the movie.

Also about releasing the single before the movie:

The current Academy rule says an eligible song "must be recorded for use in the motion picture prior to any other usage", so recordings released prior to the film will not disqualify a song as long as the film version was "recorded" before then.

I don't think thats true because pretty sure Bond themes are usually commercially released before the movie premieres and the last 2 have been nominated

omg don't ever say something this horrible

I love pop music, but my secret is that I'm an old (mid-thirties) dude who grew up listening to sad bastard music. My favorite artist of all time is Elliott Smith (RIP), who was nominated in 1997 for "Miss Misery" from the Good Will Hunting soundtrack.

It's an amazing song.

He lost, of course, but there's this sweet story in his biography about how he was super nervous to play the song at the ceremony, and Celine Dion came in and gave him a hug and told him he'd do great. So then afterward, whenever people made fun of Celine Dion to him, he'd defend her and talk about how nice she was.

That's a sweet story. :)

whenever people made fun of Celine Dion to him, he'd defend her and talk about how nice she was.

I wonder how often this happened ....

Well it's been paid homage to twice, once atrociously by J.Lo and also around the same time by Mariah.

idk who that first one is but i love Mariah's version tbh

Damn I forgot how much I loved "Father and Daughter" and the Wild Thornberrys movie.

It's a great song IMO.

Oh, I'm still PISSED that Enchanted was robbed of an Oscar. :( It's literally the best live-action Disney film ever, and I will defend it to the death.

I honestly would've switched one of the Amy songs if it got Ever Ever After as part of the nomination ticket. So Close was a fucking good song.

[–]Trax 2

Lin Manuel is doing the music for Moana. All the discussion for 2016 Oscar should be on hold until this movie is out, tbh.

[–]Jelboo 1

I was going to whine about Purple Rain not being here but then I realized that was a win for Best Soundtrack, not Best Song. Nice post!

"Robin Williams performs Blame Canada after the original singer committed suicide."

And then he committed suicide too...

I always get super pissed about most of their winners every year, like hurt locker, frozen, DiCaprio never winning I don't even watch it now, I just read a Reddit post about it later nowadays

My mother loves Top Gun and everytime it's on tv she sings Take My Breath Away and texts me.

My mother, let's just say, can't sing.

I swear to god that movie's on TV at least once a week.

The original queen of 80s bops is back… Irene Cara wins her second Best Song in 3 years for Flashdance… What a Feeling, which is possibly the most 80s sounding song to exist.

If my children ever ask me about the 80s I will just point them towards Flashdance tbh.

This is a really great post. Glad to see my boy Bruce up there :)

IDK I feel like 21P might get a nod, Heathens was massively popular and it's an okay song. Not my favorite one of theirs, but it's okay. Can't Stop the Feeling will probably get nominated, UGH. (Side note- who is 'The Outfit' that did a lot of producing on this soundtrack? Anyone?). If Moana doesn't get any nominations I will likely scream. LMM is the best. Give him all the awards. I haven't paid very much attention to movie soundtracks this year, so I'm not sure what else could be considered.
