I didn't pay much attention to his performance, but I saw him make some really nice attacking runs to create space for others

He runs forward but doesn't seem to want the ball in the final third. When he finally does find himself in a good position to play it forward or into the box he passes it back killing the attack. Complete opposite of what we saw of him at the start of last season. I still think he will come good but recently he has been poor. A fullback is meant to contribute to play in all thirds of the pitch and right now he isn't.

I think he is just lacking in confidence right now.

Why does there have to be a complaint about everything? He was fine, don't have to be nit picking about little things for the sake of a thread.

Why do folks here get so defensive about everything? I'm not complaining, just observing. I like Luke Shaw a lot so I like to pay particular attention to him when we are playing.

I don't think it's a stretch to say he doesn't have a guaranteed starting spot in the 11 seeing how Mou hasn't been starting him consistently. So I was asking peoples opinion on whether they think he should start vs West Ham based on his performances so far.

Completely agree about people being overly defensive when it comes to discussing players.

I think you've made some good points. There's no doubt Shaw looked tentative with the ball at his feet last night and lacked decisiveness to his game (i.e. when to overlap, playing a quick 1-2 pass with space in behind Karsdorp for him to attack, or early balls into Mkhi or Rooney's feet).

I want to be careful here and not sound overly negative because I think the one word, for me anyways, that sums up Shaw's game last night is comfortable. He went about his business but didn't really take it to that next gear we know he has (i.e. Shaw vs Chelsea (away) in 2015). Unfortunately the video in the link has been made private but see some of the comments for reference. He was immense that game and our best player on the pitch by far.

With some more time to recover from his horror injury and to get used to Mourinho's management style (I think the criticism he received for the game against Watford was deserved), there's no doubt in my mind that he can be our LB for the long-term. We just need to be patient and enjoy watching him continue to develop.

One thing I did notice was that his crossing was very poor, and has been since his injury.

Defensively though we were pretty untroubled last night so it's hard to comment.
