I've never thought about it before but you don't really see many people owning families of dogs. They'll either own a mom, a dad or a pup. Now I really want to own a dog family.

It's because dog families are oftentimes quite large and it can be expensive to own so many doggos. As cute as that would be! My cousin breeds and trains sled dogs in Alaska so she gets to own a family of doggos.

Well, a lot of a dogs behavior can be determined by its ears. Happy, aggressive, scared, etc. The cropped ears kind of look like it's ears are back in an aggressive way. Maybe that's why? Just a guess.

Historically, they weren't really cropped though for fighting. American staffordshires and American Bullies are now cropped in the show ring. edit: those cute doggos look like american bullies- and if you show them, they need to have cut ears

I grew up with dogs. All of my dogs have natural ears. We have had Dobermans. The first one we had, we kept it's natural adorable floppy ears. She ended up having chronic ear infections. Up until she died at age 5 to an unrelated disease. We took her to MANY vets and spent way too much money just keeping it slightly under control. We then got another. We researched and actually consulted many vets. We cropped his ears and kept up on medication and cleanings for the procedure. He has never had an ear infection and is extremely healthy and happy. The issue is that there are people who perform the extremely sensitive procedure by themselves.

They are also cropped if they are used for hunting to avoid getting their ears tore by boar. So unless OP hunts boar then I don't know why they are cropped.

Nah- sometimes floppy ears can contribute to trapping moisture in a dog's ear, which can lead to yeast infections. But if that dog is fed a low-carb diet (no corn in the kibble) and his ears are wiped out periodically he's fine.

Pits aren't that kind of dog. Ear clipping and tail docking was strictly for fighting dogs, less for another dog to grab, grip, and tear. Now it's for aesthetics and they do it when the pups are two to six days old with a pair of surgical scissors, no anaesthesia, nothing. Severing a dog's spine with scissors at three days old for no other reason than some asshole want to look like a badass with a fighting dog.

The babies cry for hours in hideous pain and it's the saddest sound you'll ever hear.

I can't believe a veterinarian would cut ears without doing it surgically with the right tools and without anesthetic and the comfort of the dog or for a reason, but maybe this is being down by people other than professionals.

The operation (when done by a vet) is done with analgesia, but potentially the recovery can cause pain, and the fact that there are people out there would do it themselves with scissors etc.

But personally, regardless of how it's performed, it just seems what would come under the definition of 'unnnecessary suffering' (which is why it's banned over here, across the whole EU).

I've been told by people that some breeds have extremely large ears naturally. And as a result when they shake their head they end up causing small abrasions that never heal because they are constantly shaking their heads. Over time the damage adds up, can get infected, and cause a lot of pain.

So their owners have their ears clipped to prevent this. I don't know which breeds specifically though.
