Bored at work. Here's my analysis of our season so far.
Form guide - WWWWLLLWWWDDWLWDLWD
Played: 19
Won: 10 (Leicester (n), Bournemouth (a), Southampton, Hull (a), Leicester, Zorya, Fenerbache, City, Swansea (a))
Drawn: 4 (Stoke, Liverpool (a), Burnley, Arsenal)
Lost: 5 (City, Feyenoord (a), Watford (a), Chelsea (a), Fenerbache (a))
We started out by winning 7 of our first 10 games, despite a 3 game losing streak. The following 9 games however have brought just 3 wins. All consistency with results has vanished recently and has left us off the pace in the Premier League.
Where we stand:
Community Shield won
6th in the league, 9 points off 1st
3rd in the Europa League group, need 4 points from final 2 games to qualify
Quarter Finals of the EFL cup vs West Ham.
'Big' game form - WLDLWD
(Leicester, City, Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Arsenal)
Only wins are in the Shield and in the Cup vs City.
Stand-out performers
Ander Herrera - Fought his way into a starting place for Mourinho. Partnered alongside Pogba he has given the midfield incredible amount of energy and a real presence in midfield, earning himself a senior call-up for Spain in the process.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Our top scorer with 8 goals, Zlatan has provided a totally different threat up front. His goal-drought was ended at Swansea after scoring his second brace of the season.
Antiono Valencia - The first choice right-back ahead of Matteo Darmian, Tony has been solid at right back, including a fantastic performance vs Arsenal on his first game back from injury.
Eric Bailly - One of our best defensive players before his injury, he has slotted into our midfield seamlessly for a player who is still quite young and inexperienced.
Juan Mata - Everyone wrote him off in the summer when Mourinho came in, but he has since become one of Mourinho's most influential players.
Cast-outs:
Morgan Schneiderlin - Brought in last summer, Morgan has been on the bench almost every game and Carrick is usually the first choice if we decide to play a defensive midfielder. I guess Mourinho doesn't rate his intelligence on the ball.
Matteo Darmian - Only recently into the fold due to injuries to Valencia and Shaw, Matteo has lost his position to Valencia almost immediately and was unable to get it back.
Memphis - Struggling last season has carried over to this season, as Memphis cannot break into the side at all. Limited to late sub appearances, Memphis has had no effect on any game this season and it's likely he will have to leave to gain more confidence.
Bastian Schweinsteiger - Banished from first team training until recently and not even registered in the EL squad for the season, Mourinho has made it clear he doesn't want the German at the club. Basti has not made the squad all season.
Main talking points
The curious case of Henrikh Mkhitaryan - Bought in the summer, Mkhi has rarely made the bench, never mind the team. With only a handful of appearances since a dodgy derby performance early on. Does Mou not trust him? Is he just doing shit in training?
Rooney's been dropped - With Mata coming into form, the main striker being Zlatan, and Rooney being bang out of form, Rooney has no place in the team. Is this the right choice? He's our captain, 3 goals off being our top scorer and most experienced player. Surely he can drag himself back into form?
Bad luck? - Many of our dropped points were fair, however the draws in particular - Burnley, Stoke and Arsenal, they easily could've been turned into 3 each. Dominating each game only to be robbed by a late equalizer or goalkeeper heroics. The performances are there, the results are lacking. Is that worrying or encouraging?
Paul Pogba - Signed for a world-record fee, he's shown he can produce great moments, but also games of total anonymity. How do you see him getting better, and who is best to partner him in midfield?
Lack of belief, or desire? - We have gone behind in 5 games this season. We have lost all 5. This goes against what we've grown up being used to, which is being able to overturn deficits. Granted we have won 2 games past the 80th minute, but once behind, we look beaten.
Big game performances - With Mourinho also came defensive tactics in big games. It was on show vs Liverpool, as we soaked up pressure all game, having very little of the ball and very little attempts. Is this how Man Utd should be playing?
