I think /u/spez made a huge mistake doing this.

We shouldn't be surprised that admins have the ability to do this and I'm not even shocked one actually did.

I'm stunned by WHY he did it. Because some trolls got him upset? It was legitimately over absolutely nothing at all of no real significance.

What happens when something they perceive to be important is on the line?

Part of me thinks he did it in such an obvious way to show us the capability, thus showing us that the comments and users here are indeed not safe. They can edit the past. With topics like the ones we have on this sub who's to say they haven't (or won't). Fudging up for example potential keys could be done, and it'd be really hard to catch. Showing us this could spell the doom of Reddit, though.

Or, he could just be a jackass.

I'm guessing the latter.

He reminds me of a Zuckerberg wannabe in terms of wanting power, especially when he shared at a conference, "we know all of your interests. Not only your interests you are willing to declare publicly on Facebook - we know your dark secrets, we know everything."

I never looked at the numerous, "Reddit, share your darkest secrets"-threads the same way again.

I now post zero personal info about me on here. I don't pretend like it couldn't be linked back to my actual identity if someone tried hard enough or wanted it badly enough... but Reddit is absolutely compromised and does not have our best interests at heart.

What a fucked up thing to say.

[–]in_the_airoplane 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I was horrified when I heard it, and was just as perturbed that the Reddit community was downplaying it so much.

Spez has since tried laughing it off as opening his own AMAs with, "I'm here to share my darkest secrets, AMA."

Fuck_Spez indeed.

They have all the ip log, session key, cookies, browser agent and settings and sht bro.

Wouldn't be too hard to figure out the rest.

The owner of a website will always have that capability on any platform imaginable. People never should assume that anywhere is free.

[–]distinguished_elk 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

I like techno benevolent dictators... when they're benevolent & transparent

Maybe we need AI, some kind of autonomous platform that can only be controlled in a very transparent way that no one has the source code for.

He got caught. He's finished as CEO.

Pao was so much better than a lot of Reddit deserved.

it also emphasise that if the dead man switch goes off, we can't trust this space. We need to download and screenshot or else those keys could be lost.

What happens when something they perceive to be important is on the line?

Then they modify the site algorithms to suppress it, (as with the_donald) or they wipe it completely from the major subreddits (as with the orlando shooting)

The shit that went down in r/news still pisses me off.

Here's a better question:

Reddit admins will have had this ability from the very start.

What's to say they haven't already used it for more nefarious purposes?

There's a whole lot of sketchy shit that's happened on Reddit over the years.

Going back and looking at some of it in a new light it all becomes just a bit... disconcerting.

They've been taking bribes from CTR & Co so long, he got use to the blatant, abusive manipulation. Forgot it is actually a big deal.

It was in a thread that was linked to from WaPo. It was most likely done to censor the negative comments towards the CEO from outsiders.

Because r/the_donald is an obnoxious sewer full of petulant children and the only entertaining thing you can do is sling the shit back and watch them throw a tantrum.

It's true. However, because the MSM was so shamelessly pro-Hillary during the election, i feel, it was an important counter-balance and I personally did learn a few things there that I wouldn't have found out otherwise.

They were how I found out about what was going on with the Orlando nightclub shooting. /r/news was in full censorship mode.

yupe. reddit has been getting ridiculous-er and ridiculous-er

Im not surprised they can do it from a technical point of view, obviously, and like you im surprised of what made spez do it and that it was done at all.

But I have to say that when one of the biggest communities on your website use the platform you provide to call you a pedophile and an enabler for child abuse I can understand the frustration and i dont consider it nothing at all of real significance.

Wait. You do not consider it nothing at all - meaning you DO consider it something of significance?

I wonder if any admins have done this in the past.

If you do delete your reddit account, make sure to use a script to delete all your comments first.

Also, consider voat. We have a subverse set up already: http://voat.co/v/whereisassange

I made a comment that I made a voat account and pointed out all the bullshit that's been stacking up before the CEO did this.

I have never received so much hate. What. The. Fuck.

What is wrong with people on this site? This year has been absolutely horrid, been here 4.5 years and never had an issue, now it feels like the most toxic, hateful, closed minded community I can think of.

SRD in particular is known for being extremely vitriolic.

Oh definitely, the issue is I've seen this vitriol across the site.

Posted neutral facts in a few places, got told several times I was retarded, not to reproduce, and the mods of enoughtrumpspam banned me with a message to "fuck off back to 4chan".

I'm culling my subscriptions down to gaming subreddits. I don't need this BS in my life. Will keep an eye on voat, but it's still two guys there and it's still very unstable.

Another abusive SRS fempire sub.

Interesting how certain subs seem to get away with constant violation of the rules.

I guess all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Every time an interesting thread gets linked there, to topmindsofreddit, or conspiritard I just brace myself for what feels like a cockroach infestation.

[–]envisioned_delusion 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

toxic, hateful, closed minded

IS THAT A THREAT???

/s ;)

I don't blame you for leaving. I have used this website almost daily for 6 years, but I am considering leaving as well. The main reason I am still here is because of this sub.

[–]in_the_airoplane 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I went from being a browser of the entire site to now hopping between 3 (used to be 4 until one got nuked) subs.

Shilling and selling out of /r/politics was strike one.

Pizza was strike two.

And now to see the CEO modifying comments... I don't think I can stay here in good faith.

The only thing that's keeping me around is the number of people who are beginning to legitimately care about the real situation of what's happening with our country. I've been a conspiracy theorist now for about 7 years and I enjoy presenting different viewpoints to those willing to consider it. And likewise, this community has well-informed people who open my eyes to new things.

Having such discussions is pretty important to me when I feel like I'm speaking a foreign language to most people in the real world.

Not an easy situation to be in. What little empathy I have towards Spez is that he's probably realizing that he can't maintain external investors while keeping this place a bastion of free speech and ideas. That was the price they paid in selling us out, though, and shame on him for doing it.

Whoah, the CEO of reddit went in to /r/The_Donald the most ridiculously clique-y sub in all of reddit for all time and modified peoples posts? I mean, I understand reddit is a private company, he owns it he can do whatever the hell he wants (obviously) but if there were ever a line not to be crossed I think it would have to be this one.

No kidding.

Especially because the the_donald users remind me of the Oregon militia men who take their rifles and by the end of it, the freaking US government is the one stepping down.

Say what you will about those guys and those users, but I can say with certainty that they're not a hive you want to step on.

Pardon my french, but that's pretty fucking wild that they did that, blatant gratuitous censorship, and it's at the top off /r/all lmao

If you weren't aware that reddit is heavily monitored and moderated, you may be living in a dream world neo...i mean fellow redditor. [–]girlfriend_pregnant 28

I was on the fence about #pizzagate... now its obvious that there is something behind it.

/u/spez is probably part of hillary's pedoring.

I doubt what you're saying is true, but I want to upvote you to the top just as a middle finger to him.

There's been a lot of things involved in "pizzagate" that seemed like bullshit but the New York Times ran an article the other day that opened with this paragraph...

Days before the presidential election, James Alefantis, owner of a local pizza restaurant called Comet Ping Pong, noticed an unusual spike in the number of his Instagram followers.

Then they never bring up his Instagram again. If you're not in the loop, he's had pictures of children taped up, kids with "for sale" signs on them and with stacks of foreign currency, and all around other creepy stuff.

Why bring up his Instagram in the article without addressing everyone's concerns? Why bring up his Instagram at all if you didn't feel like it was worthy of informing the reader any further on?

Now twitters in trouble for allowing pedophiles to trade pics a videos on their site, r/pizzagate was shut down, Assange is missing...

Goddamn theirs a lot of erie stories that seem to be related...

You're entirely right but none of what you're saying has to do with Spez himself.

I believe the more plausible scenario is him getting strongarmed to shut us down by his investors, the threat of a lawsuit, the government, intelligence agencies... who knows. But I don't think he's trying to cover for his own pedophilic activities.

Yeah I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply it did. It's just been a weird couple of news days.

A suggestion, copied from my comment elsewhere:

This is newsworthy. Consider sending it to your local newspapers, and to large ones. If anyone can put organize putting together a community press release, that would be amazing.

Maybe throw up a wiki or collaborative document? 1-2 pages, basic bullet points, a few interesting anecdotes, the most important implications... (if you have an archive, note spez edited his comment...)

Then blast that out to the press! Reddit is the 8th largest site in the world, plenty of outlets online will jump on this, and even potentially large print newspapers.

If you can't help that way at least reply here with any suggestions!

I don't see what is so hard about setting up a key, personally.

Install GnuPG (https://www.gnupg.org/) (even easier on Linux), run

    gpg2 --full-gen-key

in a cmd window, follow the ~5 simple prompts, wait a few minutes, BAM! Key!

    Exporting is as easy as

gpg --armor --output mypublickey.gpg --export [any key identifier]

then just copy the contents of mypublickey.gpg and you can post them anywhere and everywhere to make sure that everyone has them.

Just for the sake of example, I created a key for reddit following these steps. Here

Also, signed this post. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----

I just haven't had a chance to talk about it with the other mods to see if they've set theirs up. I know as of this morning one person was trying to find the passphrase for an existing key vs generating a new one. We really are working on it, I'm not just saying that to blow smoke. ;)

Just remember pgp isn't all good. You loose that key, for whatever reason, you loose everyone's trust. Someone else gets that key, they can potentially impersonate you. Make sure the team knows how to store their keys. Roleplay scenarios where one or multiple people accidentally loose their key.

Don't interpret this as a post trying to discourage you from getting a key. I am just trying to highlight potential disadvantages. Everyone saying get pgp and I haven't seen one person bring up disadvantages or potential concerns.

I know as of this morning one person was trying to find the passphrase for an existing key vs generating a new one.

    https://help.github.com/articles/generating-a-new-gpg-key/

There is a nice Github article you can point them towards. Steps 1-9 guide you through key creation. One thing to note: you are not required to include an email.

The PGP key I signed that post with doesn't have a specified Email, just a Name and Comment.

I actually didn't know you could create a pgp key without an email address. I mean, it makes sense now that I think about it, just never realized that.

desperate need to increase my knowledge of PGP

    That I can help with.

Install GnuPG (https://www.gnupg.org/) (even easier on Linux), run

    gpg2 --full-gen-key

in a cmd window, follow the ~5 simple prompts, wait a few minutes, BAM! Key!

    Exporting is as easy as

gpg2 --armor --output mypublickey.gpg --export [any key identifier]

then just copy the contents of mypublickey.gpg and you can post them to pgp.mit.edu and /r/GodSaveTheWhiteWizard/ (Do both so admins can't edit the key on one)

Then to sign, create a text file (In Notepad or Notepad++ or similar, NOT WORDPAD OR MICROSOFT WORD!) and paste the contents of your comment/post in the file. Then, using Windows Explorer, navigate to that folder, then hit "Open Command Prompt Window Here" under the File menu. Then use Command Prompt to run the command

    gpg2 --clearsign "nameoftextfile.txt"

That will create a .asc file in the same directory. If your original was file.txt, it will be called file.txt.asc.

Open the ASC file in Notepad, copy the contents, then paste over your comment in reddit. Now you have signed your reddit comment with your PGP key, and nobody can edit your comment (or it won't match the signature).

Verification is a different step, and I can walk you through that too if you need it. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----

This isn't ground breaking technology, but people are talking about them "having the capabilities" to do this, what is actually the matter with all of you?

I mean really, you could make the argument that Obama did and AMA or some shit, but the truth is that it was just a formality or PR stunt and Reddit doesn't matter. Reddit isn't a news site guys, this isn't the kind of place where you should be getting most of your news from, it's like when teachers would tell you not to use wikipedia as a source, but ramped up to 11.

Bottom line: Yeah censorship is definitely an issue, and it shouldn't really be encouraged, but some of you genuinely seem to live in a fantasy world where Spez telling r/the_donald to fuck off is some kind of shocking revelation.

I always ALWAYS spell check my posts. I started suspecting that either admins or mods were editing my posts since every time I came back to read them a few hours later they were riddled with spelling mistakes. This only happens when I make conspiracy-related comments BTW.

I guess the admins really didn't like my conspiracy theories. They added in spelling mistakes to make me look retarded and therefore less credible. I think this happens a lot more than you think.

Edit: Not sure why a noncontroversial personal anecdote is being downvoted. Admins in here downvoting comments?
