I PERSONALLY won't remove the post because the community likes the post, but /r/Technology shouldn't become the dumping ground/circlejerk-central every time an admin does something that the users don't agree with. That being said, the post has been locked for now. Had I removed the post, we would be inundated in accusations of being complicit with censorship -- had we let the post continue unabated, we would be inundated with countless modmails complaining about the post. You must understand the position that posts like this put the mod team in. They set us up such that we are the villains no matter what happens, we simply can't win. Have some empathy and let this blow over without calling for blood (ours or Spez's).

I understand this rustled a LOT of jimmies. Removing him as CEO won't accomplish anything, nor will circlejerking about it. It's done, it's over. Spez apologized and the only thing that remains is some safeguard to prevent similar trolling again.

Edit: sending me threatening and harassing messages doesn't help anyone or fix this issue.

He also changes usernames, I used to be called HonestRegardlessOfKarma

Regardless if you support Trump or not, this is a massive breach of trust, power, and an overall scummy thing to do.

Mod note:

Feel free to discuss the issue over here. This is potentially a very serious issue for reddit.

Thanks for the reports.

Wow. As a 30yr+ IT guy who goes through multiple yearly audits?

That's kinda huge. I mean really huge.

Hey? Paging /u/spez....

I get your point, man. But?

Would you please take the time to write up a full "thing" on this?

Wow.

EDIT: For anyone reading this while I am editing? I can't overstate this. On the other hand, let me be clear that Reddit is a private company. Their site, their rules.

I am not calling malfeasance. I am asking if /u/spez would take the time to describe his thoughts on this and whether he would do it again on the self-defined "Front Page Of The Internet."

The "again" part is The Clever Bit.

His latest comment is no better. It feels unfair to be called a "troll" because I have a certain political belief.

Haven't people gotten into serious trouble for posts on Reddit? How can anyone without a doubt claim they weren't edited now that we know it happens? All really negative/illegal posts are invalidated, all good and life affirming posts can be considered fictitious. This might have ruined Reddit for me.

Wow, really?

what was spex THINKING?! as if no one would notice him swapping user names of a massive subs MODS! he's lucky he's the CEO, anyone else would be kicked out the door in a heartbeat

[–]SimpleAnswer[S] 1456ポイント1457ポイント  (37子コメント)

Until now it has been speculated that this was possible, but there has never before been proof (much less a direct admission) that this is done.

Forget the politics involved, this has MASSIVE site wide implications.

What? Of course it is possible, who on earth though it was not? Pretty much any forum/comment system/etc is like that.

Come on, don't you want to hop on the fake outrage train? Quit talking sense and grab a pitchfork.

It is just amazing to me how many people posting in r/technology have no clue how technology works on a very basic level.

Unfortunately there is no decentralized and uncensored alternative to reddit. Don't give me any rants about voat, that site suffers the same centralized design.

Will the open source federated alternative please stand up?

[–]SimpleAnswer[S] 109ポイント110ポイント  (5子コメント)

I'm not talking about an alternative, I'm just pointing out that this actually happened. Any user could be impersonated to say anything they want, with potential real world consequences.

You guys crack me up. I remember forum mods / admins editing comments way back in the 90's / early 00's.

Is this post in the right place?

[–]MarcoMaroon 212ポイント213ポイント  (0子コメント)

There are technological implications to this act.

[–]shilabula 218ポイント219ポイント  (0子コメント)

If this is true, then he should resign, or be fired

fuck him, he tries to monetize the site (and fails), then fucks around with it for fun

Board of Directors - fire this ass hat!

[–]Mackinstyle 61ポイント62ポイント  (0子コメント)

I wonder if he will be voluntold to resign to attempt the maintenance of a sense of integrity.

I can sympathize with how crappy and tiring it must be to literally be Hitler all the time in the eyes of a lot of harassing people. But that's part of the job. If you can't handle it, step away from it, filter it, hire some PR person. Otherwise you're just not really fit to do that job.
