Yep. I messed with the “fuck u/spez” comments, replacing "spez" with r/the_donald mods for about an hour. It’s been a long week here trying to unwind the r/pizzagate stuff. As much as we try to maintain a good relationship with you all, it does get old getting called a pedophile constantly. As the CEO, I shouldn’t play such games, and it’s all fixed now. Our community team is pretty pissed at me, so I most assuredly won’t do this again.

There's no way to tell. The CEO has root level access to change the database on a whim. He apparently did this without asking anyone.
This calls into question all of reddit's security protocols. How many other reddit employees have root level access to the database, and are able to make any change without consulting with another employee? We don't know. That means there could be any number of rogue employees running around and shadow editing comments, shadow banning people, etc., and we would have no way to prove it.

This admission was done on purpose to make it seem like anything on Reddit that's posted can't necessarily be relied upon because posts can be edited by admins surreptitiously and retroactively.
It's a way to undermine #pizzagate and other posts further. If I were the entrepreneurial type, I would start an archiving site just to provide another line of defense against these kinds of shenanigans. It's only a matter of time before the current archiving sites are compromised. Everything seems to be becoming gameable and it's really disconcerting.

It's honestly not at all less serious than if Twitter decided to edit someone's tweet, without any notification, to say something else and pass it off as that person's writing. If your account is linked to your real identity and an admin changes your post to say "Fuck Someone" they don't like, there's no Terms of Service they can write that can protect them from that being a lawsuit.
I think it's really important to document this precedent, and also how shoddily it was handled after he was caught by users. It would surprise most people to hear that the admins would edit a post willy-nilly because their adolescent feelings got pricked.

I admit to creating an F U spez thread about a half hour ago. It was my first such post and done to test what I assumed was code crawling all posts. The post was archived and the "corrected" would have been archived.
The comments here about lost credibility are right on target.
Spez probably shaved off 10-15% if Reddit's future financial value. Spez also created a new slide in the investor pitch deck for any competing sites.

    A honest answer for what I saw, Their was some absolute Doxxing going on.
    On their Mod Team's behalf, they have been upfront that were new mods and simply could not handle the Job. They asked for help. Reddit Admins did communicate for a bit with them for a bit.
    I have no clue what happened in their private communications. And it should stay that way unless both parties involved agree to letting that information out.
    What should have happened was a outcry for a Mods that could have helped the young Mod. Team. Reddit admins could have even suspended that sub for x-number of days until they felt that the Mod Team could handle the Job. It was a brand new Sub, Fuck this sub had issues.
    They Admins overreacted, could have came up with a plan, enforced the plan, and none of this drama would have happened.
    Reddit Admins have a huge issue going on. This Sub has been abused by Reddit Admins multiple times, all it has done is make us stronger and Reddit Admin team lost credibility.
    The sad part is, I bet the Majority of Reddit Admnins are good people, but like any movement the loud minority ruins nice things.
    /u/Spez could not keep his cool and has ruined the credibility of Reddit, It is sad. I am sure, again, Many Reddit Admins are great people that Just Want to MAKE REDDIT GREAK AGAIN. Hopefully that happens.
