Cinderella has her godmother and at least one lady mouse ... Merida spends most of the movie with her mother ... Tiana has Charlotte as a secondary helper character ... that's all I got, this is actually kind of distressing to realize.

Yeah, cause I'm thinking more friends, not like mother or grandmother or in a caretaker position like the three fairies in Sleeping Beauty.

The muses in Hercules tried to help out Meg in at least one scene. But they're not really friends either.

This distresses me the more I think about it. When/if I have a daughter, I want her to know having female friends helps raise you up, and that finding a boy doesn't fix everything

Sleeping Beauty... the three fairies?

[–]pokeholest[S] 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Okay, I'll take that and it's remake. But are they the only exceptions?

Aren't they her caretakers? I haven't seen the remake, but in the original cartoon, don't they take over her care when she's a baby?

ETA: So if we forego rewatching the movie, Wikipedia's a good alternative reference. Here's an excerpt from the movie's Wikipedia page:

Flora came up with the plan of the three of them raising Aurora while disguising as peasant women, as the unkind Maleficent would never expect such a thing. All of them are gleeful about it, and they become excited about taking care of a baby. Flora then confiscates Fauna's and Merryweather's wands, since they should avoid using magic while carrying out the plan. After asking for the king and queen's consent, they take Aurora to raise her.

Does Frozen count? I haven't officially seen it, and I know they're not always working together... but there are two sisters? Even if there are female characters, I see your point - I suppose the fact that many of them are re-tells of fairytales about finding a prince doesn't help. Snow White isn't hanging with girls, or Rapunzel...

I definitely agree, just like they usually have a dead or missing mother. Truly, disney hates moms. (and for a lot of coming of age male main characters, their dead or absent father must come back to help them - Simba's dad, Bambi's father)

It's about two sisters, but the bulk of the movie is one of the sisters running off after the other, helped out by......... a possible (male) love interest and a (male) snowman.

In this case, both of the parents die. And now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure the father (but not the mother) come back in a flashback.

for some reason that really irritated me when I first realized it...girls were abandoned, boys still got some sort of revisited guidance.

Lilo had her sister

[–]CannaKSex Education Nerd 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah, but she's not counted as one of the princesses. Though she is pretty damn awesome.

Huh. That's a really interesting point. I'm trying to think of an exception and failing...

The only one that I can think of is Nakoma from Pocahontas? She such an underrated character, I love her. But she's also more of a minor/supporting character so I'm not sure if she counts.

There is also Grandmother Willow in that movie.

I think it says something about how those writers think the most genuine relationships are between a girl and a guy, or a guy and a guy.

Like, you even see it on Reddit. The image of guy relationships are the most pure, and relationships between women are the most superficial.

The only exception I can think of is Shrek, which is a DreamWorks film and not Disney, though it did feature the princesses

I hadn't considered that but it's quite true, and not only in Disney either. Considering the cartoons we have on television as well, even the "adult" kind like the Simpsons or Family Guy, the female characters very rarely have friends they interact with on a regular basis. More like they have all the female characters and side-characters group up for one episode because... reasons, but never develop their bond unlike the male characters.

The only old school cartoon I remember where you have two consistent female friends were Wilma and Betty in The Flintstones.
