My cleaner's friend stole my vape (self.electronic_cigarette)

So this is my worst nightmare come real.

I've been using the same cleaning company for over a year now. Whilst they have had one or two issues, they have always been fine.

On Friday I was home from work when the cleaners came over. Later a friend was joining them, so they met at mine.

The guy asked about my vape gear. Showed me his. I wasn't overly interested, but polite.

Then I saw my pico and serpent mini combo was gone. The cleaners say he doesn't have it, and they haven't seen it.

Last night they confirm their friend stole it. They claim to be returning it.

I have summarily dismissed the cleaners, and changed the locks. I will deduct the cost of new locks from any money I owe them for services rendered.

Edit: Apparently having nice things is bad and I should let people steal from me.

It's one of those thing you can't understand until it happens to you. When someone comes into your house and steals something, you personal space gets invaded and you feel just violated.

I have had it happen before, and I felt horribly violated and paranoid for a couple weeks after. I felt like my home, my only real safe space wasn't safe anymore. To me, it's not my worst nightmares but it's up there.

You handled this poorly from beginning to end. First of all, you shouldn't have had the other person in your house, secondly, punishing the cleaner when they solved the problem for you makes no sense at all. Changing the locks and charging them for it is ridiculous.

I have to agree with this. I've worked labor for people, and while I would never be dumb enough to invite a buddy over to my "job site", if someone I know did steal from an employer and I found out and got it back, I'd be pretty fucking pissed if I got fired, I didn't steal the fucking thing, I can't control what someone else does.

I used to hate the pretentious rich customers. Shit happens. Like they struggle to feed their families. I struggled. Glad I never came across someone like this.

Yeah. I'd be pissed off I got stolen from, like anyone else. But I wouldn't blame the cleaner personally. I'd tell them no one else is allowed in with them besides them/their coworkers, and if it happened again at that point I'd consider ending the contract/work with them. But I'd keep them this time because it was a poor judgement call to have the friend come in, but they were honest and said they'd return the stolen property that their friend took.

They have worked for me over a year. They know I'm pretty easy going.

I had no problem with them bringing a friend. I talked to them, I even gave them a 100ml bottle of juice.

This is strange. I wouldn't let service workers invite their friends into my home. Not a snobbish thing, it's just a bit weird. Meet them outside, sure, but letting them in isn't normal.

They have said they will return it. However I still deduct the cost of the vape from their invoice.

If they have issue, they can feel free to go to the police.

You shouldn't punish the cleaners for their shithead friend. They didn't steal it, and are returning it to you...

If you were working for a company, doing exactly what you are told, and a coworker was caught doing something illegal, but you were blamed for it; how would you feel? I would be pissed at the coworker, but more pissed at the employer for blaming me for something I didn't do.

You caught the murderer, but are blaming someone innocent for the crime.

I completely understand being upset, as I have something like that happen to me in the past and I maybe even taking a part of what it cost, but why the whole thing if you get it back?

I 100% agree that you should deduct if they don't return it but not with they do indeed return it. That would be punishing them for returning it, which makes no sense. I'm not saying you should reward them for returning either.

Have fun! If they do decide to go to the police you can have fun paying them probably a fee plus whatever you deducted from their vape. :) Because their friend stole your vape, you wanted to punish the cleaning company. If my sister or family member robs a bank do I need to go to jail as well because I'm related to them? Jesus Christ with your ignorant ideology I just get livid thinking about what you just said.

The cleaning company assumes all responsibility for their friend, even if the client allowed the friend to be there. He didn't allow the friend to steal his shit. And yeah, you'd go to jail in that situation because if the two situations are remotely comparable, you'd be at the bank with them.

You are being downvoted like hell because you aren't making any logical sense. Sure the cleaners goofed up and had a friend steal from you, but you are getting the vape back. The cleaners never stole anything and have done there absolute best to make things right, yet you want them punished. That's like saying your son killed a man so we're putting you to death because you raised the kid.
