Steve Bannon, Donald Trump's chief White House strategist and senior counselor.

The appointment of Steve Bannon as Trump's chief strategist has sparked rage and protests this week. As executive chair of Breitbart News, Bannon ran a media outlet set on undermining establishment politicians and providing a platform for racism, sexism, and xenophobia.

But Bannon has also made an impact in a subtler, but perhaps more powerful, way. As head of the Government Accountability Institute, he has helped generate damning investigative research about major politicians--research that has spread through mainstream news outlets and shaped public opinion, particularly about Hillary Clinton.
