Not really.. I mean as recently as the 90s people were shamed and bullied for simply being gay. It probably still happens today in some places, so I don't think it's a fair comparison.                 There's a large positive self image movement in gay culture to negate the negative image that has surrounded it for a long long time.

                Many gay people are in the closet. Gay pride is meant to show people that you can feel good about yourself and be vocal about something that many people are ashamed of.
