First she encourages people not to vote for Clinton.
Then she encourages people to protest Trump's victory.
She needs to make up her mind.

She probably wanted to encourage people to vote third party. Wasn't she in support of Stein?

Then I guess the question for her is if a protest vote for Stein is somehow more important than stopping Trump from becoming President. It would be one thing if she kept her message just here in deep Blue Seattle, but she held a rally in Philadelphia preaching the same message.

There was no ground swell of support for Trump. We, the Democrats, lost because not enough of us turned out to vote. People like Sawant are part of the reason that happened.

I'm not seeing how those two things are at odds.

Last Monday did you think someone besides Trump or Clinton was going to be our next President?

[–]DustbinKCapitol Hill 3

No, but this isn't about what I think, it's about what Sawant thinks.

I'm pretty sure everybody, including Sawant and even Jill Stein, understood that it was either Clinton or Trump. As Obama said, elections have consequences, and the consequence of this election is the make up of the Supreme Court.

Sawant's problem is that she's mostly worried about Sawant. Long after Sawant is a footnote in Seattle politics, the Supreme Court is going to be making Conservative rulings because of this election.

"I'm not with her." - Sawant.

So shes part of the group of protesters down in Oregon, who didnt vote for Clinton, yet are protesting Trump winning the election. Neat.

No, she was not part of that group.

Is this really the best use of her time?

For Sawant yes. Her goal the next four years is to raise her profile along with SA's to increase donations and therefore her bank account. She wants to be rich and famous, this is her vehicle. Expect a book and multiple MSNBC appearances in the next six months.

She'll flip to the Democratic party before the 2020 election and her House run, as a sign of the resurgence of the activist wing. "I can do so much more good as part of a major party, but I won't leave behind our values." Once you're in the DNC the money train really opens up, and she'll be set until retirement. Assuming Ellison leads the DNC they will be scouring America for Bernie-style "idealists" they can stick in front of a microphone and recover the left wing vote. She's perfect for them.

Why would someone supposedly hell-bent on becoming rich not even accept their full salary as a city council member?

Because she is wealthy enough not to need it? Trump is taking $1 for a presidential salary, I don't know that this is the best example to use. I think if Hillary had won this plan wouldn't be in play, because the corporate wing of the DNC would be on lockdown and trying to keep the far left in the wilderness. A Trump victory is way better for Sawant career wise. Hyping up her national profile also makes it easier to skip state legislature and go directly for a try at Congress.

We're talking about a former community college economics instructor. I agree that Trump is probably not the best example to use here. Regardless of the fact that we have no evidence of her personal wealth, I don't see any problem with aspiring to a higher office as long as she continues to address the needs of our community.

Why did we elect this nutter?

I think she really got her foot in the door with her initial "the rent is too damn high" campaign flyers way back when she won the first time. That's when I knew we were dealing with a serious city politician for the 21st century.

[–]AmericanDerpBrougham Faithful 14

Because her predecessor wasn't representing any real constituencies anymore outside business interests (all perception, perhaps, but that was Richard Conlin's fault).

I was thinking more along the lines of her last opponent Pamela Banks who was significantly more qualified than Sawant.

Edit: Phrasing

The only people who run for city council in Seattle are public radio show call-in cranks. If they let us choose "none of the above" on the ballot, we'd wind up with 9 empty chairs.

[–]Lollc 0

We ended up with this nutter because the people of Seattle stupidly decided to do away with electing city council people at large.

The system is broken, the people claimed. District elections will fix everything! And Seattle has been boned ever since.

Sawant is a living example of the adage, "what smells sweet in the store may stink in the stewpot."

Why she was re-elected is beyond my ken.

Nice to see all the local MAGA folks again this morning. Please remember the vitriol and obstruction coming from the GOP the past 8 years as you criticize Sawant. Trump represents some things that are completely counter to Sawant's politics, it's crazy to expect her to not say and do something about it.

Please remember the vitriol and obstruction coming from the GOP the past 8 years as you criticize Sawant.

I prefer to remember when Sawant wanted to nationalize Boeing and "retool" the factories to build metro buses.

How many of these people are actually from Seattle? How many upvotes are from people? I feel like Reddit is just getting the shit kicked out of it by The_cheeto's bot net. The admins really need to do something.

And yet they're both unqualified ego maniacs who love seeing themselves on TV.

Please remember the vitriol and obstruction coming from the GOP the past 8 years as you criticize Sawant.

I totally remember the democrats saying " elections have consequences and we won" or "it time for republicans to go to the back of the bus".

What about all those dumbass antiwar protesters from W's time in office that suddenly went quiet as obama bombed the middle east?

They still protested. However, the group was much smaller and the protests were not covered as it's been normalized over the past 15 years and isn't news.

Say what you will about Sawant's ideas, but there's no reason she should be receiving calls and emails telling her to kill herself and to go back to India. That's sinking down to the "12 year old boy screaming over the mic in CoD" level.

Fake as fuck. Believe it when they actually arrest someone, otherwise anyone can sign up a new gmail account and hate crime themselves for sympathy or leave a voicemail off a voip/burner number.

[–]DustbinKCapitol Hill 7

So your theory is that someone is faking these threats for Sawant? This makes sense in your mind?

I mean she associates with such sane and rational people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqqDcEbWuR0

Peaceful protest is fine. Being disruptive in a peaceful manner is fine. Once you start burning things or damaging property, it is not fine.

We have a right to peaceably assemble. We have a right to protest. The right got to do it for 8 years, and now is crying foul when we're threatening to do it for the 4 to 8 years Donald is president. kindly fuck off. We're gonna make ourselves heard, and there are more of us than there are of you.

"Being disruptive" is a difficult balancing act though. At some point, "being disruptive" is the same as denying others to exercise their rights.

Some people calling and writing have made misogynist, racist and bigoted statements, and the calls have come from across the country, Sawant said.

In emails, people have told Sawant to “go hang yourself,” called her names and instructed her to “go back to India,” according to the council.

*sigh*
