Harassment from fellow r/MUA user (self.MakeupAddiction)

OK, so I I made a post yesterday ruffling some feathers with the title. That was not at all my intention, as was covered in the comments. People go to events, they post FOTDs, I wasn't trying to discuss politics, I simply used a title I thought was witty. Granted, we have had political and social discussions here on MUA (sugar skulls, Hillary's debate looks, Riot GRRL looks) and have been able to maintain civility, that is not what I was trying to do.

However, nearly the mention that I was at a protest now has a user of this community harassing me. This user took the time to message me in the middle of the night, insulting me, calling a few users idiots, digging through my post history, mocking me for a post I made 6 months ago about how my boyfriend cheated on me and continuing from there. I have already reached out to the mods and blocked the user. What I want to impress upon here is that this type of behavior is super unnecessary. As harassment being the #1 bullet point on the side bar, we have to have more respect for one another than this. People are going to disagree with one another. That's life. It doesn't need to be taken off the thread and it is no excuse to attempt doxxing.

Did you report them? (I don't know how reports work on reddit, as I've never had to deal with that). That's creepy, and honestly quite cowardly.

Since you've already reported to the mods I think it was inappropriate for you to make a post about this given the inevitable downvotes that user will receive. I suggest dealing with the mods and mods only going forward rather than shaming/pointing out someone in an actual post no matter what their behaviour.

If that user is doing what you stated then it's extremely disrespectful on their part but I don't think it calls for a public shaming.

You really just gotta let this go, no need to post about it to stir the pot again. Yes, you became upset, and sorry about that, but really, you had to expect some sort of disagreement with a title like that.

I'm really not upset. I dont mind anyone disagreeing with me, disagreement is rational, harassment is not. It is not at all unreasonable to be able to avoid people privately attacking each other on a makeup sub.

That's not really fair to say. Just because her title was politically-motivated doesn't mean she should have expected/deserves this level of harrassment. It's almost like saying, "if women are going to dress scantily clad, they should expect to be harrassed/raped/etc." Should she let it go? Probably yes, as it is the internet, but I personally believe this user should be punished.

Ok so I had to log into an old throwaway account for anonymity.

Seriously, let it go. You have no idea what internet harassment really is. As a regular user on this site, I've had:

  • My son's pictures stolen and posted to racist subs because he is black

  • you tube videos made about me that are just montages of my face and screenshots of posts talking about my child hood rape

  • My pictures stolen and photoshopped into porn and then reposted all over the place.

And lots and lots more that I don't feel like getting into because it'll be a long post. Seriously let it go, it's not that bad.

Sucks that you had that happen, but you don't get to tell someone that they don't know what harassment really is.
