Trump announced Sunday that Bannon, the chief executive officer of his campaign, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, would serve in the White House. Bannon previously served as the chairman of the Breitbart News website.
McMullin ran as an independent against Trump, with the backing of establishment conservatives looking for an alternative to the GOP nominee.
Republicans on Twitter congratulated Priebus on the appointment, while some criticized Trump for making Bannon one of his top aides.
