I've had a lot of conversations - before & after the election - with white liberals trying to tell me how much racial progress "we've" made.

Day before the election, a white academic reacted to my racial pessimism with "things aren't so bad".. referred to improved "data points".

I had to explain that I'm also a "data person", but that the data I see are the everyday lives of POC who experience ongoing racial terror.

To my surprise, 30 minutes later, this academic followed up with me to say: "You're right". He'd re-thought the racial progress narrative.

Not only this, but he actually thanked me for pushing him to think beyond the liberal trope of progress.

The thing about white supremacy is that it socializes all of us to minimize its terror, to systematically deny or under-estimate the harm.

"We've come so far", "things are getting better", "it could be worse" -- all of these tropes minimize racial terror.

Americans have been socialized to "look on the bright side" despite centuries of colonial & racial violence, torture and oppression of POC.

@alwaystheself Prioritizing identity politics over progressive economic policy is part of why we lost. Don't deny that, it's obvious - その他の返信を表示

@JamesTCarterII Without racialized voter suppression, Clinton would have won this walking. -
@fivetonsflax Wouldn't have overcome high turnout by poor Whites who (wrongly) assume that liberals only like poor ppl if they're not White -
@JamesTCarterII This is not correct. Trump got fewer votes than Romney. -
@fivetonsflax Rural/small town Whites give conservatives and electoral college advantage, and we made them feel demonized and/or forgotten - その他の返信を表示

@JamesTCarterII Prioritizing white *feelings* over POC *safety*. I’m not here for it. -
@fivetonsflax Keep making it an either/or thing, I'm sure that will win us lots of elections - その他の返信を表示

@alwaystheself Acknowledging incremental progress does not equate to ignoring today's real and serious racial problems. -
@willfleet Except when it's used to minimise or silence people trying to talk about today's racism problems.@alwaystheself -
@nixsight@alwaystheself I don't know of any examples of "silencing" people as a result of accepting progress. Minimizing, I can see that. - その他の返信を表示

@willfleet (To clarify: No great argument with your position. Just question the value of splitting that hair in this thread.)@alwaystheself -
@nixsight@alwaystheself My point is, it isn't healthy to deny the progress that has been made in our lifetime. *Much* more needed of course
