I popped it in and played about an hour last night and I can't really decide whether I should sink time into this or not, can't even seem to form an opinion after an hour.
I played Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger and stuff like that back in the day and loved it but ever since, my biggest RPG moments would be Demon's Souls and Dark Souls I guess. Playing DAI last night, I immediately tried to dodge roll and well, play it like a Souls game and was somehow baffled that it doesn't play like it, not sure why.
In you guys' opinions since it seems like a huge game, is it worth for me to get really involved in this if I favor/value the following:
-Not a fan of (excessive) cutscenes and story unless really well done
-Looking for tight and fun combat
-Good sense of exploration/discovery
-Do not enjoy busy work fetch quests
-Not a fan of open world if it feels rather aimless
Maybe the cover's protagonist fooled me with their medieval Souls-ish armor...? Please don't rip my head off if it's your favorite game or something, I really don't know jack about the entire series, literally bought it because it was cheap and the cover is cool.
Witcher 3 is Dragon Age Inquisition if it were good.
It's not an open world, but a bunch of hub worlds you get to go to. There are lots of fetch quests but they're optional.
I would recommend checking out Divinity, it sounds like you'd really enjoy it. I'd stick with Dragon Age a little more and see how you're feeling about it though.
The combat isn't very tight, but it's only just barely serviceable. It's not an action RPG, is a "hold down R2 and keep attacking, press other buttons for skills when it's best to do so" game.
The story isn't too heavy so I think you'd probably enjoy that. You may miss out if you don't talk to your companions sometimes, but your call.
It's a fun game. I don't think it's bad; I enjoyed my time with it.
Based on those 4 you should avoid.-Looking for tight and fun combat
-Good sense of exploration/discovery
-Do not enjoy busy work fetch quests
-Not a fan of open world if it feels rather aimless
DA: I forte is not his combat
The sense of discovery is mild at best
There are more fetch quest that you can think of.
It's an open world-lite game where you're expected to wander aimlessly.
But side quests and combat are weak.
•They are in the game.
Looking for tight and fun combat
•Some fights were fun but I have played games with better combat
-Good sense of exploration/discovery
•There are some really nice looking places.
Do not enjoy busy work fetch quests
•Oh dear, do I have some news for you...
Not a fan of open world if it feels rather aimless
•Sometimes it does.
This game is good as an offline MMO.
The combat is either hard and frustrating or too easy, the feedback you get from kicking someone's ass or slicing them up feels board-game'ish... Player character and opponent animations don't fit together and make combat feel "impactless" and boring. There is also no real synergy between PC and NPC characters in combat moves, unless it's the old "tank distraction -> flank with rogue -> attack from afar with arrows and magic".
Also there is no armor in the game that looks good aren't a lot to begin with.
But, OP, what I don't get... you're not interested in story (unless it's really well done), but you also don't like aimless open worlds, but you DO like exploration.... this is all very contradictory for me.
Just a really boring game with no pizzazz.
More broadly, Bioware has been a shadow of its former self since the company was bought and the founders left. Mass Effect 1 and 2 and Dragon Age 1 were the studio at its best. Under EA, the games have been more formulaic and less powerful. DAI is the ultimate example of this. Unfortunate. And it makes me worry about Andromeda.
But yeah, for casual RPG fun, Diablo III does pretty well on your checklist. Only thing it really fails on is discovery/exploring. It's pretty linear. It will feel incredibly samey once you get a few Lv70s and start doing post-game stuff though, because all there really is to do at that point is Rifts (randomly generated dungeons) to grind gear to... get stronger and do harder Rifts. But you'll get a few dozen hours out of it, easily, before getting bored. I've probably got around 200 hours on it and still take it for a spin once in a while.
This comparison doesn't make any sense. Witcher 3 is Dragon Age Inquisition if it were a completely different game with only a fantasy setting and a few general RPG mechanics in common.Originally Posted by IlGialloMondadori

so No.
bought it cheap and still regretted it. It's bollocks.
DA:I was fun during my first play through, but it's seriously a slog on subsequent ones. I've beaten Dragon Age Origins and the ME Trilogy several times, but I can't bring myself to even go through DA:I again. I've tried several times. Even on the games own casual setting.
I played it on PC with DSR (supersampling) so maybe that's less of a plus for someone playing on PS4. It's a very flawed game but still worth playing if you take some basic advice to avoid all unnecessary collecting, especially herbs; collecting shards is actually kind of fun because it presents some traversal challenges but other than that don't be looking in every nook and cranny unless you want to burn out on the game.
Sure it does. You've got a choice between two open world fantasy RPGs. Don't choose the one that sucks.Originally Posted by CaviarMeths

Beyond the companion quests which trigger on moving your "relationship" arc forward not really. What they did is they made it so you finish a story quest and go back to your hold to strike up new dialogue with points of influence which makes the game schizophrenic in how much the actual story is drained from the world but at least it's predictable. There's some minor triggered dialogue but it's poor return on investment. So outside of the main quest are there really any sidequests that add to the characters, lore and setting like the ones in the Witcher 3? Or are they all fetch quests?
Given these guidelines, nah. Skip it, you'll get super frustrated very quickly.Originally Posted by Bloodporne

And this is from someone who *loves* the game.
Yeah, I didn't finish it, but it wasn't anything special. Standard, unremarkable bioware fare.Originally Posted by Bloodporne

It wasn't terrible, but it's mostly boring, drawn out and spammy combat. Not tactical or challenging beyond a few fights.-Looking for tight and fun combat
I guess. Game looks neat, but exploring it is not fun.-Good sense of exploration/discovery
This game is filled with those. Filled to the brim.-Do not enjoy busy work fetch quests
Yeah, stay away. Far, far away. This game is a chore top to bottom.-Not a fan of open world if it feels rather aimless
In terms of your points, DA:I is one of the worst culprits I can think of for pointless fetch quests and an aimless open world. It has its moment but a lot of fluff in between those.
Try Witcher 3 instead. It's a more straightforward rpg. It'll feel familiar.
play witcher 3
