A forced deportation of millions of people cannot occur without massive human rights abuses. It's easier to ignore those abuses if you train people to not see them as human.

Yes it is.

You can be imprisoned for up to 6 months and/or fined for being present in the United States illegally.

My understanding is that it is a civil offense, not a criminal one. I'm not a lawyer though, so I could be totally wrong.

It's actually both. It's almost never charged as a criminal offense because it's just not reasonable to waste resources imprisoning people before deporting them, but it's an option.
