      Technically the one pictured is the PS2 slim which came out in 2004 making it only 12 years old.

      Also while looking this up on Wikipedia I found this:

      Announced in 1999, the PlayStation 2 was the first PlayStation console to offer backwards compatibility for its predecessor's DualShock controller, as well as for its games

      This seems kinda obvious as the PS2 was only the second console in the line and therefore its predecessor COULD NOT have offered backwards comparability since there would have been nothing for it to be backwards compatible with.

          You did it the smart way. I was all of 16 and had washed dishes and saved for a couple months and bid on a launch day PS2 on Yahoo Auctions. The final bid was 406.25. I sent a money order to Louisiana and got fuck all back. Yahoo was useless and I ended up filing a complaint with the AG of Louisiana (useless). I'm lucky I have amazing parents. My dad saw what happened and picked one up for me with a copy of Kessen. Ever since then, whenever I've felt short of cash, I've ruminated on that 406.25... well... I suppose five years later Louisiana got plastered by that hurricane and I can only imagine justice was served >:-(.

            One of my fondest memories was the Ocarina of Time release day. I went to my local gamestop and they had fairy lights hanging up all over the store, a big tri-force floating over the cash registers spray painted gold, zelda music playing from the speakers and they were all wearing Link hats and elf ears and having a blast. Everyone there was just hanging out waiting for the shipment of games to arrive (yeah, they didn't send shit in advance back then) and we just hung out talking about games and how excited we were to play the new Zelda, then when they got there, we all lined up nice and took our turn, wished each other luck as we got our games and left, then went about our merry way to go home and have the greatest adventure of our lives.

            Me and my friends waited in line for about 30 hours for the Wii at Walmart when we were in college, camped out in the lawn and garden section. We were somewhere in the mid-twenties in line. They only had 30 systems. There was a nice elderly couple that was right behind us in line. The husband stayed overnight and his wife came to take his spot in the morning. They were trying to get one for their grandkids for Christmas. We stayed up all night playing board games, got our consoles at midnight and left. It was a great experience and I would never do that again.

            I'd imagine it can be a pretty good gig for people of a certain temperament. A couple extra hours of either OT or getting you out of a different shift, customers are all there for one of a few things, depending on which games are releasing that night. So no parents getting tricked into buying Their kid GTA, no pressure to upsell services and new preorders to the customers, no dealing with trade ins. If you're a social person and it's a game you care about, you're surrounded by people that will want to talk about it with you.

              I did the same thing for the PS4. It was the only console Ive ever bought at launch. Waited for 9 hours outside GameStop to get one and I was first in line. Met some cool people who joined me about an hour in, had a couple extra chairs in the truck to share with them. Had my mom bring me a portable kerosene heater and hot chocolate to share with the guys (temps were in the 40s when I got there at 2:30 and near 0 when the doors opened.) By midnight, there were over 50 people in line and I do not live in a big town at all. GameStop employees came to prepare at 11 but couldn't share how many consoles they had. By the time they opened the doors, they said they only had 10, me and my new friends got the first 3 :) It was brutally cold but a hell of a fun night!

              Sometimes it's both. My experience is with exclusive toy figure launches, but I've worked launches where the company says "we're sending you 60 units", but also requires non disclosure. Sometimes they say "here are some boxes don't open them until X day." The fun ones are when the company says, "every store is getting 50 units", but you get 12 and the store across town gets 100. That's always cool. Fuck you Crystal Heisenberg.

                This is how I bought mine. Walked in assuming I would get a shitty Gameboy color game, jokingly commented that I wish I was the guy in front of me who got the ps2 on reserve.                         Dreamcast was the bomb. Sonic Adventures, Powerstone, Soul Calibur, and Skies of Arcadia. Especially Skies of Arcadia. That game was, is, and will always be one of the best RPGs ever made. Right up there with Ocarina of Time for me.

                        I never considered PS2 to be a system people got addicted to. Addicting games tend to be portable (like Pokemon or Candy Crush) or have online.

                        If you think playing Final Fantasy X for 2 weeks straight is addicting, you never had a real video game addiction. I played Street Fighter IV for 7 years. I played Team Fortress 2 for...???? My friend dropped out of school and pretty much gave up his entire life for WoW.

I live in Canada and there's a huge opiate problem right now, mostly fentanyl and dilaudid (hydromorphone) but there's still a lot of heroin going around too. It's very sad, some people need to wait 3 MONTHS, sober, to get into a program, or even just to get on methadone/suboxone.

                        First playthrough, can't get past Osgiliath as that arse of a boss always ended up sending my entire team to sleep. When they awoke, SURPRISE!! Sleep time again without a single turn.

                        Second play through I beat that bad boy. Think I missed a couple of things in places so it wasn't 100% but ah well.

                        This reminds me on something that happend to me like 8 or 9 years ago: One day at like 3 or 4 in the morning, some dude at the train station tried to sell me his ps2, which he had with him in a plastic bag, for like 30€.                         I was deep into being a PC-only guyduring that console generation. I love motorcycles, though, and I always knew Tourist Trophy was the closest thing to a good motorcycle sim that exists, so I asked my wife for an ebayed one for my birthday. Instead of going to eBay she went to Target, and gave me a brand new in box PS2 Slim. That was in 2013. Pretty sure I'm one of the last ones to get on the PS2 train. Tourist Trophy is pretty good.

                        Kind of relevant but I just wanted to say that it only became an epidemic when heroin reached white neighborhoods. When users were primarily black, they were scolded for lack of self-control. Now addiction is viewed as a disease.

                        It's just that the timing of the change in perception of addiction as a lack of self-control vs. a disease (which it is) is very precarious...
