Coinbase loves being a "compliance" company. That gives them an extremely protected business model, in order to compete with them another company would have to spend tons of money and time to become compliant.

That's the whole idea: protectionism through regulation. It's the same way the banks work: more regulation is better...it's keeps out competitors. Of course, the banks hate Dodd-Frank because this kind of regulation protects consumers more than it does them.

And being a "compliance" company is a wonderful excuse to close down any account without warning and without ever having to reveal the real reason. All Coinbase has to say is something like, "we notice activity on your account that appears to be not in compliance with our TOS and since we are BSA compliant company, we must terminate your account and have cancelled any transactions in progress."

Coinbase isn't even trying to hide this, /u/bdarmstrong wrote about their extremely high investment in "compliance" and that is what they want to build their expertise and staff around

At Coinbase, about 20% of our staff works on compliance in some form. There are many difficult and exciting problems to solve (especially from a data science and machine learning point of view) to measure and mitigate risk. If you’re an engineer or compliance/risk professional who is interested in helping build this bridge we’d love to speak with you. We’ve spent many years and millions of dollars working to become the best in the industry at compliance

Coinbase's "compliance" is a representation of a criminal problem facing the general public with regard to the current financial industry. Thanks to corrupt protectionism and the revolving doors of politics, which we saw through "too big to fail" everyone is forced to pay a useless tax to line the pockets of these parasites. Remember that Fred Ehrsam, founder of Coinbase, was previously at Goldman Sachs, so it's no coincidence that Coinbase has the same exact business model.

For years long-term bitcoiners have been calling Coinbase the Paypal of Bitcoin and they have certainly proved it. I think of them more as the "Banksters of Bitcoin". The other nice thing about being a "compliance" company is that they can easily defend most of the public (and priviate) complaints about their behavior as compliance issues.
