I have a vivid memory of my friend crying when Obama was elected in 2008 because he was an Islamist terrorist that threatened to ruin country. Completely irrational, unfounded, and incorrect accusations against Obama.
Here's my rub with the 'give this guy a chance' and 'he's our president whether you like it or not, let's move on' logic.
Republicans consistently said Obama is not my president. They consistently blocked his entire agenda in congress...for 8 years. Vitriol and hate toward Obama was expressed throughout his entire presidency. They couldn't give the guy a chance that was promising 'hope' and 'change.'
Why then do Trump supporters think everyone that is upset about the election need to all of a sudden support trump the day after the results? The things said about Trump being racist, sexist, etc. are based on his actual words and actions, based on actual words and actions from his base. When people who didn't vote for Trump say their afraid because of these reasons, they are basing their fear on actual events, words, and actions spoken by Trump. They aren't conjuring these fears from some irrational place because Trump is a white billionaire.
I agree with the pick the lesser of the two evils argument but don't sit there and talk about how we all need to move on and accept Donald when his base did no such thing during Obama's presidency.
Also, Trumps base is richer than minorities on average. We've experienced a stock market that's at its highest point...ever. Unemployment is now more than half of what it was when Obama took office. So when we talk about Trumps base being left behind what do we mean? They typically articulate what they feel as the fact that gays can now get married, that we have a black president, and terrorists (aka muslims) are everywhere and out to get us. It actually has nothing to do with the economy. It's cultural and they feel left behind because a white minorities USA scares them.
