Man, it feels like time went really quick.

What's the popular consensus on Fallout 4? To me it seems like people have mostly forgotten its existence.

I got it day one, and enjoyed what I played. But the fact that I tried this after having played The Witcher 3 really soured my experience. F4's faults such as the uninspired dialogue and run of the mill missions made it feel like a drag at some points. It still had some good elements like great atmosphere and an enjoyable world to explore, but I never finished it (I think I made it to that "city" inside a baseball stadium and stopped right around there). This surprises me since I loved the shit out of Fallout 3 and this seemed like a worthy succesor. Is it worth to go back and finish it?

What do people remember of Fallout 4? Try to keep the talk somewhat light on spoilers.

I liked it, but it was nowhere near as good as 3 or NV.

The quests were bad though, so few memorable ones. The solution was always to shoot something.

Fallout 4 is a masterpiece once you embrace the fact that it's Apocalypse Simulator.

Don't play it on PS4.

I was very disappointed. It felt like an expansion to Fallout 3. Not enough new things in terms of skills and systems. Regression of dialogue and choices didn't help. Utterly forgettable game.

I remember that im so happy I got into PC gaming this year.
Because heavy modding is the only thing that made F4 enjoyable.
The voiced protag limited everything so badly and the quests werent worth your time.

Also fridge kid.

It's a great game troubled with one of the worst plots ever made for a video-game, some awful design decisions and atrocious dialogue options.

I wanted to adore this game but ended up kind of disliking it. The quest structure is typically rather limiting and the dialogue system is such a colossal step down. To top it all off, I'm not a builder at heart, so the big pitch involving settlements doesn't do much for me.

The atmosphere remains top-notch, however.

Even leaving Witcher 3 out of the discussion, Fallout 4 was a major downgrade over other similar titles such as Skyrim or New Vegas.

Terrible dialogue, role-playing and a nonsensical story degraded the game to just a mediocre first person shooter.

I remember how disappointed I was in it.

Fallout 3 was a shit ton of fun after some super high difficulty mods, though, maybe they'll be the saving grace of FO4 too for me. Will check it out again in a year or two.

I put a lot of hours into it, and I don't know why? I think Fallout 4 is a terrible videogame. I guess I was just bored at the time, and the nature of the gameplay requires it to be a time sync. On a positive note, I got a fair amount of value out of it! I probably played for 170+ hours or so. I've never even considered purchasing the DLC though. I am going to take a long hard look at the next Elder Scrolls game before I purchase. I feel like Bethesda has to make some drastic improvements for that game to interest me.

Agreed.
It certainly wasn't the Fallout game I wanted it to be.

Way too much action around every corner and thanks to that, it wasn't as immersive as the older games.

I think it was a huge step back from both Skyrim and New Vegas.

Both are very good at letting your actually roleplay, although in very different ways. New Vegas was all about your character and the story, and you could really approach every quest as whatever character you decided to play. Both in terms of dialogue, but also in terms of what skills and weapons you had. Every story-based quest had several outcomes based on who you were and what you chose to do. The XP based leveling system worked well with this, and provided you with character growth for doing what the game did best.

Skyrim was more about just living in a huge fantasy world. It was fun just wandering around, collecting berries and making potions, or fighting the war for either the Stormcloaks or the Imperium. The story and quests were more about taking you to cool places and getting you geared up. It's a fantasy sandbox with a shitload toys to play with. The leveling system really compliments this. You don't get XP from doing quests, you get XP from doing whatever stuff you want to do, or what your character is supposed to do.

Both games have character and leveling mechanics that suit the experience.

Fallout 4 tried to be somewhat in the middle, and it suffered for it. It wasn't fun just to just exist in the world, yet the quests and story were terrible as well. It failed on all accounts.

I forced myself to finish it a couple of months ago.
I found it really bland. The quests were mostly uninspired, the central conflict between the Institute and the Brotherhood wasn't engaging at all and the setting didn't have a lot of personality. Also the dialogue system and voiced protagonist were terrible fucking ideas.

They improved some stuff over the 360 era Fallout games (gunplay, visuals, crafting), but I feel like Bethesda still can't seem to get what makes this franchise exciting.

Didn't have nearly the same effect 3 me New Vegas did. Not that I should've expected it too, of course, they were massive advancements in the franchise comparatively, but I would still rather play 3/NV again than go back to 4. And I'm obsessed with post-apoc STILL (I know the general consensus is the genre is way over saturated).

I haven't even played anything Far Harbor or beyond and I have the season pass from when it was $30. And I got the Pip Boy edition. That's not to say I regret it, I will go back and play the expansions at the very least eventually, but I was mainly turned off on the PlayStation performance being subpar once again.

I had a blast playing it, like 400 hours or something insane. One day when my backlog isn't brutal I'll finish my survival playthrough.

One thing I appreciated was a unique story in every building no matter if it was just a holotape or a computer diary. Made me really want to scour the map.

15 hours and I haven't beat the game. For me, it was the most disappointing Fallout considering how amazing New Vegas was.

They could have followed the design principles of NV, but alas, Bethesda Game Studios has different design priorities.

The gameplay is quite improved from 3/NV. Crafting features are cool for people who are into that stuff. The writing and quest design was absolutely abysmal though and it totally killed my interest in the game once I got far enough into the main story.

I really liked it for the first 20-30 hours and then all of that grinding amounted to nothing. The settlement building was just cosmetics and added nothing to the game. The factions stories were all crap aside from maybe the Minutemen questline. The way they all stopped once you found the Institution was jarring as fuck.

the ending was extremely disappointing. the story just grinds to a halt when you find the Institution and just races to the end after forcing you to make a ridiculous choice.

Great gameplay though.

I played through all of the game, including dlc. I personally liked most of what I played but I do agree that after playing other games in the genre, things like the dialog, and some aspects of combat seem mediocre in comparison. The way they chose to handle player alignment is a big one.

I loved the atmosphere and hope they improve on the clumsy stuff for Fallout 5. Base building was awesome, for example, but I'd like to see it expanded further (including in terms of utility), and ideally with some sort of co-op / co-habitate functionality.

Graphics obviously need a ton of work too, not just aesthetically but the low-ish framerate on PS4 made it difficult for me to play. I'll reiterate that I think the atmosphere was ace, though.

Never got the hate this game got on GAF, still a great game despite issues and simplifications

I would have loved to see Obsidian being given the same budget though to make the game. It was shocking to me how good new vegas was vs fallout 3. Obisidian really make better RPG systems which I personally like, Bethesda went a more mainstream route to get a larger audience which is understandable but a shame nonetheless

Put over 130h into the game. I really enjoyed, but I found it to be the most forgettable of the core Fallout games. Which is probably the harshest thing I could say about it.

I'm not really itching to go back. I was hoping a combat overhaul and locations & monster mega mod pack would be out by now (like Project Nevada and AWOP), but it seems like modders lost interest in the game as well. Which sucks. I didn't even bother trying Nuka World yet.

I still enjoyed the game, but I don't see myself going back anytime soon.

Decent-ish world, with terrible choices made therein.

Voiced protag? Not necessarily inherently bad, only it came with a

layout that was way, way too rigid.

Companions were better than FO3, but not as good/fleshed out (IMO) as NV.

Perk system had potential, but came down '%' increase that led to underwhelming selections at times (similar with vanilla Skyrim).

Base-building was WAAAAAAAAY too big of a focus - not anywhere near enough focus on good dev-designed quests, and over-reliance on the radiant system.

Far Harbor made some good strides, but over half the season pass content being more base-building stuff made the season pass feel wasted.

I don't play a vast, open world game like Fallout to spend my time deciding where to place toilets in a camp.

In trying to make it Minecraft-ish, they ruined the game for me.
