President Trump commiseration and rage thread

I can't believe it. I'm not sure if I want to cry or rage. So many feelings.

This is patriarchy.

When the most experienced Presidential candidate of all time lose to someone with no political experience.

When a man who marginalises and denigrates Latinos and the black community... when a man who boasts about sexually assaulting women... when a man who is known for his business failures.., when he is deemed better than one of the most accomplished women of our time.

And the sense of loss for what could have been. To finally have a female President. To feel like things were changing, that the status quo was changing. But no. Back to yet another white man. When do women get a turn?

When will we have another female candidate who is accomplished as Clinton, as experienced as Clinton? When will we next have a viable chance?

A tragic day to be American. My own country is against me. My optimism is dead. It was battered all year but this is the killshot.

I feel horrible for Hillary Clinton. She's worked so hard for it to come to this. Hers should have been the story to inspire a generation of girls. Instead a generation of racists will prevail. Republican propaganda has won out. The education system has failed and there's no hope for recovery. White supremacists have been validated. The work of our first black president will be undone. And our environment is screwed; we are in the last decade where we can keep it livable, though not comfortable, for our kids and grandkids. This is unacceptable.

  • Someone posted a break down and apparently more than half of white women voted for Trump.

    Wtf.......

I feel terrible. A trump president, supreme court, and republic congress? what do we even do

  • Hadassah

I went to bed last night praying. Now I feel sick to my stomach. I live next door to a country where just over half of the voters chose a racist pig of a man to be their head of state. Watching the US election from Canada has been scary, but I wanted to believe that he would not win.

    • Just under half actually, I think? Clinton beat him on popular votes. Most in the US don't want him either.

I am angry. And so sad.

I live in Belfast, but I am an American.

For the first time, I am considering giving up my US citizenship and becoming a UK citizen instead.

I'd go for Irish citizenship, it's a better bet than British with Brexit going on.

      • Tee2072

I don't live in Ireland. I live in Northern Ireland. I don't qualify for Irish citizenship!

      • Jhaywardbenzal

I'm English but my family is from NI. The Rep of Ireland don't officially recognise the border I believe so I think you could go for Irish citizenship.

      • Tee2072

Nope, that's not how it works! To be an Irish citizen, you have to either have been born in the Republic of Ireland, born in Northern Ireland (which I was not), or have one or more Irish citizen ancestors.

My son and husband can have Irish citizenship. I cannot.

Boo! Well, I suppose British would be a start but who knows in these crazy times? :/

    • Pipsy

One of my American friends is doing the same, becoming a Japanese citizen instead. I'm so sorry that things have turned out like this to make you feel this way. :(

  • Twining_Ivy

Oh America... what have you done?!

  • DarkAthena

I am hurt and terrified. I feel betrayed by America.

  • ShiningWing

I'm a trans girl and I'm terrified, and I don't even live in the US, I live in Canada.

We're back to the bad old days. The blood for blood days, the all or nothing days.

  • It feels like the hatred from Trump supporters is already starting to spread across reddit :/ They've been emboldened by this disgusting result, just like how racial attacks increased after brexit

  • MsFortitude

    Unbelievable.

  • Today's a new day. We have a president elect, but he's not in power yet. The ideals of a democracy haven't been defeated - we voted and got an outcome. Though it may feel like an election is the end of the road, it's just the beginning. There's just over 2 months between the election and change of power. What can we do to impact that transition? How can we hold ALL of our elected representatives to task? The president is just one person and cannot make sweeping changes without buy-in from other branches of government. Make your voice heard to your congressional representatives, to your state representatives, to your governors, and your mayors, and your city councils, and even your school boards. This is the time to work harder and make ourselves more visible, our voices louder, and hold onto our values of equality and respect. That means treating everyone with respect, even those who may not respect our ideals.
