I was just browsing and had a watch of that RVP clip vs Arsenal from 2013 and it got me thinking about one thing we are currently missing that we used to have in spades.
Under the last years of Ferguson (I realise the clip was Moyes), just look how many men we had in our squad. We had such a solid core of winners with an abundance of mental strength. Just to name a few we've lost Evra, Rio, Vidic, RVP, Park, Fletcher, Rafael, Scholes, Giggs and a younger and hungrier Rooney.
Heart and Balls, the will to stand up and be counted and the desire and mental strength to succeed. Remember the way Roy Keane knew he was going to miss the final but dragged us through vs Juventus as if he would rather die that lose a game of football. Look at our current squad now, who has these attributes ? Herrera and probably Zlatan, is that it !? Where has all the passion gone ?
Nothing to do with skill and talent, but compare Smalling to Vidic, Fellaini to Keane, Lingard to Park etc. The effort and desire a player like Park put into Manchester United. By comparison our current crop seem to meek and tame, like they are more passionate about instagram and dabbing than they are about being a winner. A balance is fine, but look at how mentally weak a lot of our current squad seem, despite having the talent, we look like we are ready to crumble everytime we succeed and they all go hiding. And Rooney the captain, that clip of him jogging around after just being subbed on the other week, that's our fucking captain ! I swear the way some of our current players carry themselves Vidic or Keane would put their head through the dressing room wall if Fergie didn't bollock them first.
I think you can have all the talent in the world, but you need a core of winners, leaders and strong club mentality to succeed, we are talking about flair players like Griezmann, but I think most of all we need leaders right now. Not sure if you agree or disagree ?
