I've seen far too many libertarians for whom socially liberal was but a distant third place in the two considerations of their political compass. Socially liberal in the sense that they want their personal social freedoms like drugs or sex, but opposed to social programs completely and see protections for others as an imposition upon the freedom to discriminate.

I was genuinely surprised to see Johnson's platform say he was opposed to allowing business to discriminate based on sexual preference. But I've even heard him complained about as not a true Libertarian.

I've also seen good Libertarians, like Penn and seemingly Weld. But the "weed Republican" perception of Libertarians has a firm grasp in my mind. A Republican controlled Federal government is in the interests of privileged white men who want lower taxes and to call it freedom.
