Forgot to add the unmentioned family money Al Bundy must have had. Even in the 80s, having a house in the Chicago suburbs on the income he was pulling in as a shoe salesman in the mall would have been impossible.

Television shows exist in an alternate universe where real estate is much cheaper. Hence, the loft in Friends.

That's at least explained away somewhat via rent control.

Yup. Illegal subletting of grandma's rent controlled apartment.

Hey, at least they were real about it. Is there a legit way we could afford to live in the village? Fuck no, were scamming to get by.

How I Met Your Mother.

Young architect in his 20s and his apparently jobless law school student friend live in a huge two bedroom apartment in Manhattan. You're looking at easily over $3000-$4000 a month for rent in their theorized Upper West Side neighborhood. It miiiiight be doable if Ted was making today's average entry-level salary (around $50,000 a year), but they'd be eating ramen and ketchup every day and sure as shit not going out drinking every night.

Though in that one episode they do the thing where it shrinks down after coming back from a real house.

That was Lily and Marshal's apartment, which isn't as nice as Ted and Marshals

Especially the drinking at the bar every night part! Ted probably spent over $500/month at that place by himself.

I'm sure Barney helps him out. I hear that guy's rich.

Marshall's family is pretty well off and likely helped with rent and Ted's parents were pretty successful, too. The big thing though is that the apartment is rent controlled. In the episode where they go to Jersey and Ted realizes Stella wants him to move there, he says, "I thought a rent controlled apartment on the upper east side is part of the reason she wants to marry me." To which Barney says, "More like the whole reason. AM I RIGHT?" and he tries to get a high five.

This always bugged me too but I kind of gave the show my own ultimatum and just pretend Barney is helping to pay the rent cus he loves having a chill spot above the bar. Also I think they got the apartment in like the early 90's didn't they? Rent control would probably have kept that down a lot.

They do mention the apartment was rent controlled in one of the episodes.

They also pointed out over and over that Marshall took out crazy student loans during his time in law school. So it's kind of believable.

I'm not too familiar with the show, but could it be that since it's a story being told, Ted is exaggerating it a bit, and in reality it didn't look like that?

That's not real. IRL grandma would be like "go fuck yourself, this place is mine"

Ross and Monica's grandma was dead, hence the illegal subletting.

Yeah I was about to say, IRL grandma is dead man.

Yeah, they mentioned it a few times and how they were there illegally. It was only allowed because Monica lived with her before she went into nursing care/wherever, and passed, so there was overlap. The super liked her (the guy who blackmailed Joey into teaching him how to dance) so let them stay, though any time they pushed him for something he reminded them he could throw them out. It was kind of a running gag to hand-wave the huge apartment thing.

What I don't get is why Ross and Rachel didn't sublet Ross's other apartment and keep that one in the finale. That was a dumb move, giving up something that cheap. Took me out of the willing suspension of disbelief. :D

Mr Treeger was last seen in season 8. He could have gotten a new job and so they lost the ally they had hiding them from the actual landlord. Not sure how much trouble you can get in for living in an illegal rent controlled sublet but they might not think it was worth it since Ross and Rachel have enough net worth to be worth suing at this point.

Well really irl the landlord would say "get the fuck out of this high market-value but rent stabilized apartment so I can charge more for it"

And not let the super help hide it in exchange for dance lessons.

I guaran-goddamn-tee a landlord would not just let that slide, he would be in there every month checking to see if the old broad to croaked so he could raise the rent.

Could be a foreign or otherwise non New York based landlord who is just trusting Treeger cause he has no reason not to.

again, treeger wouldn't give that up for dance lessons IRL, and no, even a foreign agent wouldn't just let it slide for ten years, they would absolutely be verifying it some way.

It's fine to do these kind of zany explanations for a 3-camera sitcom, because how they got their apartment isn't really the point... but it irks me when people say "nooo friends is totally realistic because they gave that dumbass explanation that one time!"

He didn't just let them get away with it for dance lessons. He liked Monica and was ok with her screwing the landlord. He didn't threaten to out them until Rachel and Joey pissed him off. The dance lessons were more of asking for a Mea Culpa from Joey, he really didn't want to kick out Monica he was just angry. If this is a person or corporation that owns a lot of property they might not notice a couple grand a month if their agent (Treeger) is telling them everything is ok.

I do think it's weird though, that Monica and Rachel's apartment had such a different layout/quality than Chandler and Joey's just across the hall.

Is that common?

I assume Monica's grandmother decorated it up before passing, while Joey and Chandler just bachelor pad it in their place.

Also they lived on the top floor of a walk up building. That's why they also show the elevator broken lower rent

And the fact that every room has only 3 walls.

The autistic boy from St. Elsewhere just doesn't understand real estate.

But at least he understands story structure and comedic timing.

Big Bang annoys me the most. Penny has a giant 2-bedroom apt in a college town on a waitress salary.

It was unspoken that she was a high dollar prostitute.

not to defend that show, but Penny's apartment is smaller and only has one bedroom.

What about Bob running his constantly-empty burger joint with three (four?) bedroom house in Hoboken?

Well they are literally always behind on their rent, it's a running joke/theme, plus they're weirdly involved with Fischoeder (i.e. the thanksgiving dinner thing, often involved in hijinks etc)

Or maybe Teddy just spends a shitload on burgers :D

They are constantly talking about how they barely scrap by and how Linda has a system in place to get their orders and rent, etc, paid by paying certain stuff late.

It's exacerbated when they never give him a break. He never has a windfall to make up for it. It's just loss after loss.

I alwaya lost my suspension of disbelief every time someone in Friends moved apartments so easily. "Get you're so annoying! Luckily there's always a vacancy in the middle of New York with my name on it hah!"

If you remember ross got ugly naked guys apartment by showing up also naked "naked ross" apparently everyone wanted that apartment.

The loft in friends was owned by Ross and Monica's grandmother back in the 40's. Keep in mind their grandparents and family are extremely wealthy. The grandmother dies and they go through elaborate shenanigans in the show to keep her rent control.

That's the case with virtually every sitcom. I'm struggling to think of exceptions other than maybe Seinfeld. Maybe Bob's Burgers if animation counts.

Jerry, being a famous comedian, could have afforded to live on the Upper West Side. 300 feet from the American Museum of Natural History and 1000 feet from Central Park.

But Kramer affording a similar apartment in the same building without having a job for a decade becomes more difficult.

In "The Visa", George comments, "Kramer goes to a fantasy camp. His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2,000 to live like him for a week. Do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch off your friends, and have sex without dating. That's a fantasy camp." This likely refers to Kramer's various strokes of financial luck over the course of the series, like optioning his coffee table book about coffee tables to a major Hollywood studio in "The Wizard", winning $18,000 in "The Subway" successfully betting on horse races and signing a contract with Calvin Klein in "The Pick". It may also indicate that Kramer came into money at an earlier, unseen time and is therefore independently wealthy to some degree, explaining his not having to work.

Plus he owns Kramerica Industries

Couldn't even pay his intern Darren, though. Even with his help getting that chicken.

Darin is going to be "going away for a long, long time..."

Kayfabe devil's advocate: In "The Strike", we learned that Kramer had been working at H&H Bagels 12 years prior. If we assume the show shares realities linear timeline, that would mean that he was working a low paying job 3-4 years before the pilot. So he would have had to come into the money after that but before the pilot. It's possible that during that time period he received an inheritance (as alluded to in "The Shoes") and moved from Greenwich Village ("The Little Kicks").

Also, he doesn't make money from betting, he can't allow himself to bet because he's a compulsive gambler ("The Diplomat's Club", "The Susie"). If it made him money it never would have been an issue.

Kramer's existence alone is difficult. Best not to think about it too much.

Kramer never existed. He's a figment of Jerry's imagination.

Kramer is the Tyler Durden to Jerry's Narrator

The real Kenny Kramer made a lot of money selling battery powered disco jewelry. You can't make this stuff up.

BTW, today's prices are ridiculous, but back then a rental apartment on the Upper West Side was more affordable. If you paid the rent ontime for years, then the owners weren't as inclined as today to replace you with somebody with a lot more money.

A lot of sitcoms, people had "Random Business Job" though, so the income isn't as clear.

"Shopping Mall Shoe Store Salesperson" doesn't project much income. Add to that, it's constantly pounded in that he has a crappy job, add on that Peggy didn't work and comes from a family of "hill people" doesn't help matters.

Some stuff I understand, like Friends. Simply, a small NY apartment doesn't translate well to a show set. But in theory, it's believable that they can all rent apartments, even if the apartments they would rent would be smaller. It's pretty hard to see Al Bundy as a homeowner at all, regardless of the size of the house.

Maybe it belonged to his Grandma or something and he got it for cheap by buying the rest of the family out.

Considering they still lived in the school district where he played high school football, it seems plausible. His father is dead (according to wikipedia) and his mother isn't really in the picture, maybe she left him the house when she moved on.

I always just assumed they blackmailed their way into the home. None of the Bundy clan seemed to mind getting their hands dirty from time-to-time.

Even at 12 I wondered why Peg wasn't considered hot.

My 12 year old boner never wondered

You're supposed to seek medical help if an erection lasts more than 4 hours. 12 years is definitely a problem.

Constant nagging and belittling drops perceived hotness substantially imo

that's why I love being nearly deaf...I can just turn off the hearing aids when I'm sick of it.

Leela, her name is Leela

She was a mutant

With a thingy around her wrist, one big eye and purple hair

Oddly, in the episode where she finds her parents she can take it off. Later, when she and Fry are trying to get some alone time and it starts playing an ad she claims the only way to remove it is to cut off her arm.

Completely unwatchable

Are you sure she wasn't just messing with Fry

Its not odd, Futurama plays recklessly with established canon in small ways like that.

She would deliver, and do karate

Ah the universal truth they don't teach in highs school: even the hottest chick in the world has a guy that's sick of seeing her naked. Fuck the hot but mean one, marry the homely nice one.

Why not the hot and nice one?

The actress that played Peg has 2 sisters that are twins. In the 80s, I thought they were the hottest girls. They had a show called Double Trouble that gave me many happy memories.

She reminds me too much of Ava Devine to not be considered hot.

He didn't really "stay" relevant. There's a huge gap between the end of MWC and the beginning of Modern Family. He wasn't really relevant during that time period.

I had a similar experience with Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh.

  • As a kid: Rabbit is such a wet blanket jerk who only cares about his stupid garden.

  • As an adult: Poor Rabbit just wants a quiet life, but has to deal with all these idiots and morons.

When I was younger I thought Pooh was cool, as I got older I realized he's a selfish asshole.

As an adult: Poor Rabbit just wants a quiet life, but has to deal with all these idiots and morons.

Squidward seems about the same. Rarely does he scheme to ruin Spongebob's day. Mostly he just wants to be left alone.

Only saw the episode where he takes his kids scholarship money. He's a jerk.

A millennial could never afford that house on a shoe salesmen salary.

Peg wanted to have sex all the time too.

"Aww c'mon Peg, we just had sex last month"

Growing up I was definitely in the "why isn't this guy happy that his wife wants to have sex all the time?" club. Then I started dating someone with a high sex-drive while depression, health factors, and work-related stress left me with a very low libido. It sucks. I would never consider Al Bundy any sort of role model, but that experience has made me appreciate him as a character a lot more.

It's something you really can't understand until you're an adult yourself. I have what I'd consider a moderate libido, but have dated more than one partner with a high sex drive (not at the same time, phew that'd be crazy!), and it can be a downward spiral that starts merely at "I just wasn't up for it for two days straight" and causing some tension that prolongs your un-desire. :(

Married with Children makes a lot more sense if you assume Al is gay and deeply closeted.

Peg is super hot and constantly begging him for sex and he always says no. Similarly, he always talks about wanting to have sex with other women but whenever the opportunity comes up he says no. For the entire show Al is completely celibate except for the rare occasions, like once a season max, where he can't avoid sex with Peg.

He spends all of his time hanging out with other guys who live a similar lifestyle - they even start a club based around male companionship.

He has a job in women's fashion which he pretends to hate but never leaves. You're telling me he couldn't get a different retail job somewhere else?

All in all it's a sad tale of a man living a lie.

It's not a terrible assumption However...

All in all it's a sad tale of a man living a lie.

It's actually a show about depression, frustration and getting stuck in the family life by accident. Their kids were never planned. They showed in early episodes him and Peg were a fling that got stuck together. He's making the best of a bad situation. It's about never fulfilling your aspirations. He has everything he'll ever need or want but he can't be happy. A nice home, a decent car he loves and a crazy but fun family. Still can't be happy. It's the little things in life that make him happy just like the rest of us. Winning on a lottery ticket, getting a good deal on something etc.

Peg is super hot and constantly begging him for sex and he always says no.

Ever been in a long term relationship? You get tired of sex at some point. You don't want it all the time. For Al, Peg doesn't cook, doesn't clean and is mainly concerned with herself. I could see why he doesn't want to have sex with her. She didn't even make dinner. She spends all his money then comes home and falls asleep eating candy and watching tv. The man has no energy for sex.

Similarly, he always talks about wanting to have sex with other women but whenever the opportunity comes up he says no.

He's gotten close many times and it always comes back to him that he can't cheat on Peg, not that he's gay or doesn't want to be with women. He spends all his free time staring at them.

For the entire show Al is completely celibate except for the rare occasions, like once a season max, where he can't avoid sex with Peg.

See first comment.

He spends all of his time hanging out with other guys who live a similar lifestyle - they even start a club based around male companionship.

If having male friends with a similar lifestyle of just wanting to be around guys makes you gay. Then I'm flaming.

He has a job in women's fashion which he pretends to hate but never leaves. You're telling me he couldn't get a different retail job somewhere else?

He could and did get jobs elsewhere. Lots of episodes of him working odd jobs or doing odd things for cash. He kept working there because like all of us we get stuck in our jobs. We get stuck in what we know and we don't want to make big changes. We know what our check is, and we can't risk making a change because we have a family to support. He got stuck working in a low volume shoe store. He gets to spend most of his days sitting around so really it's a cushy job.

Nice theory. But was it a women's only shoe store? I forget.

Yes. The meetings celebrating big jugs or big'uns if i recall correctly though.

Nah he's not gay, he just doesn't want to have sex with his wife.

Isn't there a saying that goes "Show mw a hot woman, and Ill show you a man who is tired of banging her".?

Then there's the matter of each person's libido. That's an issue couples run into I would say.

Generally men's libidos wane over time while women begin to desire sexmore in their 30s and upward. Lots of studies bear this out (also my own experience in middle aged dating).

I always heard it as, "Show me a hot woman, and Ill show you a man who is tired of her shit . . ."

It's not "tired of banging her" it's "tired of putting up with her shit" which I think implies that if it weren't for her shit he would still happily bang.

The only thing better than hot is different.

It makes sense when you take into account that leading actresses are always 10x hotter than the woman they are portraying . . .

Except for the fact that there were episodes where Al was clearly into Peggy and wanted to have sex.

There's also the episode where he gets attracted by a guy and spends the whole episode trying to prove he's straight.

a few times he tried to branch out to other jobs but always failed. and it was back to the shoe store.

Crappy car? He had a Dodge! All American. Greatest car ever made! He loved his car more than his family.

I do like how they never specified which Dodge it is though.

When shown it was actually a 72 Plymouth Duster. Close enough.

I'd have smashed fuck out of Peg back in her day

I'd have sucked Al Bundys dick just to see what she tasted like

Peg also let him go to the titty bar

It just goes to show how low standards for American middle and lower class families have plunged. In the 90's, Al Bundy was considered a loser. Today, we aspire to be him because what he has is MUCH harder to get than it used to be.

It's not up to age. It's up to economy. Back then we were looking at the worst case scenario. Now the worst case scenario got worse.

All i learned is that shoe sales men used to earn ALOT more in the 90's

all on a crappy shoe salesman salary.

for real. all those movies and stories about people "stuck in the corporate grind" with all the basic trimmings but Aren't Happy... fuck off with that shit! perhaps you'd like to return to being a broke ass bachelor working 2 jobs at minimum wage to barely afford a room in some 3 bedroom apartment, an annual trip home to see mom, and enough beer to forget your problems until tomorrow.

He's a 50 year old man working retail at a shoe store.

And somehow he can provide for his family in a way that they're not rich, but his wife doesn't have to work. 2 kids who seem reasonably happy with what they have. He has a car, a dog and owns a house.

It may not have been his dream carreer, but it isn't all that bad either.

Try and imagine a world where everyone aspired to at least a mid-level management job or something on a similar level or higher and actually reached their goals. Who'd be left to actually do the work? Thank god for 50 year old shoe salesmen, blue collar workers and the lower class in general.

Yep. In a nutshell.

I guess it's all about the decreasing expectations.

It's kind of like watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The older you get, the more you side with Principal Rooney.

To this day I have a hard time with Futurama because I don't see Leela, I hear Peg Bundy. Great show but when she shows up and starts talking I cringe a little bit.

Aside: The actress is a lovely person and this is in no way an opinion of her as a person, just the two on-screen characters.

Hot daughter that you'd totally hit.

Yeah but here's the thing. In the internal reality of the show, she's not hot.

This did always bother me about the show. It would have worked so much better if they had cast Roseanne Barr.

Yeah, but the narrative was that he married the hot chick he dated in high school because back then he was an all star quarterback.

Wouldn't work out if you had a homely woman. It would have to at least believable that she used to be hot.

Roseanne Barr could have been hot in high school. She was just fat not ugly.
