Snally maybe you should apply to be a Professor of Internet History somewhere. I bet that will be a thing in ten to fifteen years if it isn't already.

If I didn't ruin my life by choosing my current life path I totally would have gone into grad school for electronic literature, which is surprisingly an emerging field that does a lot of restoration and preservation of digital work.

never too late dawg

tru, I just have no idea how to get involved since my background is all STEM.

[–]Prince_Kropotkin 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

take some undergrad compsci courses, get in good with profs and get letters of rec, get some experience in real life and then apply to grad school, in something like that order

Grad school for internet history at The University of STICKAM, online. 👌🏻

wait could you explain the grad school thing? I'm probbo going into more school and that sounds hella cool

Don't go unless you absolutely have to. There are some labs that work on collecting, preserving, and analyzing electronic works, mostly ones from early eras of the internet where there was a lot more constraints and the form is lost or going to be lost, e.g. hypertext stories, illustrations in shockwave.

Lol when I first saw your comment I thought you were legit inquiring about going to grad school for Internet history studies. I need to go to sleep.

Myspace was the first major social media site

i dont have faith in snally, total revisionist friendster denier

friendster was used by hip in-the-know people, but myspace was the first social media site that captured users across demographics.

friendster was for normies. livejournal was the nerd's nerd hangout.

Hell yeah, LJ forever. And for those of us who were truly cool, and just too ~alt~ for LJ, there was always the now defunct GreatestJournal. I member...

across demographics

anyone remember social media white flight?

When all the black and brown people started using myspace, the white people fled to facebook, etc?

It was pretty weird...but kinda funny, too.

Haha holy shit, I never thought of it like that, but that is a strangely accurate description if what happened.

Everyone I knew used xanga for a bit.

Damn is everyone from alt.folklore.urban dead already?

Good fucking lord this chick.

So I spent about 8 years working for a mid-sized online community as a moderator (and later got myself promoted into a comfy management position) This girl's younger minions flooded into our little neck of the woods, bringing all their sticky drama with them.

Mostly though, girls stole her images and pretend to be her IRL trying to get cool sexy internet boyfriends who were mostly pedos using fake pictures of someone else and by girls I mean other fake pedos using stolen pictures.

aw man, that sounds like a great story, but I guess you can't tell more since that'd be risky re: dox. Yeah, for years the internet was littered with accounts using her picture. Now she apparently searches for fakes to call out on twitter so she appears relevant.

I am full of horror stories about babysitting teenagers online.

The end result was a xanax scrip and 6 weeks of physical therapy. Ha

Sounds like Teenspot, that place was nasty.

Physical therapy?

I had tension issues with my shoulders and the muscles in my upper back. Mostly from stress, partially from sitting in a computer chair for 8-10 hours a day.

I had hoped I would never hear about this bitch again.

Flashbacks to being 14, dating a kiki wanna be scene girl, I really didn't want to remember this.

What a dark time in internet history.

i wanted to be scene but my mom wouldn't let me

Your should call your mother up and thank her.

nuh uh. You know those kids with the cool parent who says "I used to be in [subculture] when I was a kid" and can show them neat vintage photographs and period clothing? My mom robbed me of that. All I can say to my future kids is "I wanted to be scene but my mom wouldn't let me" and show them lame ass pictures of me wearing Urban Outfitters clothing in an attempt to look as scene as my mom would let me look. Sickening.

there's pictures of me in girl pants, white belt, and a shitty mullet.

i wish I could escape my past.

except the mullet. it was kinda cool. i even did it myself.

Ugh the girl pants. I had like 20 pairs of girl pants. We would cut the sides and sew them back up super tight with dental floss.

The cranberry red racoon eyes were the worst though.

[–]ComedicSansI'm more toxic than you

Your mother cares <3

Right? I vaguely remember when all of this first came out I didn't believe it and called bs. Kiki or that weirdo pedo sticky drama guy claiming Mr. MySpace was dead? I figured he just decided to stay offline like most normal people that age...

Suspending the side of me that can't help but find how it all went down dark-comedy style hilarious, it really is quite sad and just goes to show how attention seeking behavior like that can really fuck with not only your own lives, but the lives those around you.

And damn, her parents were waaaaay too permissive.

Wtf they closed stickam? I remember the epic legendary atheist and Christian wars they had there. Only 90s kids will remember.

Oh yes, it went out in a blaze of glory and scandal.

Fill me in it sounds like a juicy story

Fuck, I must be thinking of something else related to Stickam because the actual shut-down was boring; it was probably just because they couldn't pay for the servers any more because they were replaced by things like youtube and twitch. There was a ton of drama surrounding Stickam though, mostly related to rape and statutory rape. Naturally.

Do you remember BlogTv? They stopped a few years ago and then came back. They were actually my favourite of the live video streamers. I don't twitch too much but BlogTv was the peak for drama. Fakesagans 24hr session is probably the worst thing I've seen in Internet history. I was there for a few hrs live.

I don't! You should do a write-up of some of the drama you remember. Jesus that video's horrible.

IIRC there was a metric fuckton of drama about "StickyNoodz"

Do you remember a guy who tried to invite a bunch of internet celebrities/dramawhores to live in his house, and it somehow all blew up? I thought it was related to Stickam or Stickydrama but I can't find anything. Was it all an illusion?

I don't remember that, but I wish I did.

Just found it- it was called Stickyhouse. Sadly a lot of the info about the dramatic happenings there seems to be gone.

[–]ComedicSansI'm more toxic than you

Sounds like it deserves its own post. I honestly haven't heard of it in ages, I just assumed it faded away.

I've spent the last couple hours looking at stickam drama, and there's so much material that it couldn't be even remotely encompassed by a post. So many trainwrecks. Gonna do a write-up about stickam's user-made version of The Real World/playboy mansion tho.

[–]ComedicSansI'm more toxic than you

I just think of some of the drama that happened in shitty Yahoo chatrooms that used to amuse me sooooooooo much. So much lost, like tears in rain...

[–]TheBatarangRecovering PIV Whore 9

My favorite part of this is you explaining myspace.

Edit: I love you snally. Make /r/drama great again!

I did not know about the dude leaping to his death, and I was a drama junkie in 07. Strange that it wasn't bigger news.

Yeah, the police reports are even floating around. Was too lazy to find them but I think I saw them on one of Dakota's lolcow threads.

Attempting to evade the cops, Cespedes jumped over a guard rail in the mall's 2-story parking garage in an attempt to land on a moving garbage truck.

This is something you expect to see in movies, not real life.

That's a hilarious internet death

This was great. Myspace somehow went completely under my radar

There was sooooooooo much great drama from Myspace. It's a real shame that it's all gone forever.

Beautiful. As a veteran of the Myspace wars this is prime material.

Are the stripes shooped though? I knew a grip of people that had them on a spectrum from 'bleached chunks of my hair away' to 'girlfriend for a couple weeks'

She had irl stripes at some point, but the originals are shooped. Look at the pixels; they were either drawn on or doctored beyond recognition by a blur tool.

the guard rail and sock puppet links are broken i think. Other than that, amazing right up.

Oops, replaced the guard rail link! The sockpuppetting link is just keeks asking herself a question on tumblr without switching into a different account and answering it.

Woohoo. Could almost feel sorry for the girl, if I didn't remember how obnoxious she was. Do tila tiquila next, she was myspace famous before she went completely insane.

Holy hell, this is some story.

I remember that story about the emo pied piper pedo and his jumping off a building, apparently tons of his teen fans harassed that girl because they thought she called the police on him. What is it about emo/scene sub culture that has so many guys who are into girls under 16, there is that guy from blood on the dance floor and a load of others. But I guess it's probably not all that different from other music based sub cultures. I used to go to a shitty indy club with my friends and like half the girls used to go there to get off with 30 year old guys when we were 17 (not illegal but odd to 17 year old me).

Nice work op!! I've been trying to find the motivation to do a write up on the gurugossiper leak from a while ago, maybe there could be a 'drama history' bit.

Also that Rolling stone story is written by the UVA story lady that got them into so much trouble.

holy shit, this is some of the best drama i've ever heard

My experience with a myspace celebrity involved me taking a huge shit in one of her friend's apartments after a party I invited her to and never talking to her again.

I've read about Kiki Kannibal on lolcow.farm but I've never known why so many people hate her. She's definitely a washed up has been now.

Yeah, lolcow doesn't really talk much about her myspace days, maybe because many of them were too young to have been exposed to it. Kota has probably outshined her in terms of fame just by virtue of how many people are on social media mow, but 10 years ago Keeks was the Queen Bee of social media and managed to burn bridges with everyone because of her rotten personality. It's pretty sad; most of the big former Myspace celebs are surprisingly very successful in fashion and entertainment now, and she's sitting around in her parents' house trying to get people on twitter to remember her.

Obviously a ton of people back then were on myspace but I was out of the loop and I never made an account.

I did read the Rolling Stones article about her, but that obviously left out a lot of the details.

I never understood why she didn't do as well as her sister in Japan. She's prettier in person than her sister is.

[deleted]

Her sister photoshops herself to hell and did an in person reveal when she went to Japan. She still to this day dmca removes all photos of it because she looks nothing like her shopped photos. Kiki more or less does look like her photos. She used to do live streams on stickam and it's obvious she doesn't alter her photos as much as Dakota does.

Yeah, Kiki is gorgeous while Dakota is not so attractive, but Japan favors youth and keeks has a very mature appearance, so she never really had a chance in that market.

I wonder if Kiki has seen this yet lol

    YAAAAASSS QUEEN.

My frontpage/Reddit in general needs more posts like these. Internet history 101 folks- take notes. The indisputable ~golden age~ of the Internet. Complete with:

    1. Kiki Kannibal (and optional: Dakota Rose)
    2. Hannabeth (my personal fave)
    3. Audrey Kitching
    4. Jeffree Star
    5. Jac Vanek
    6. Zui Suicide
    7. Tila Tequila
    8. Raquel Reed

There's my Myspace top 8 right there. Does anyone else remember the good ol' LiveJournal days? There was that awesome circle jerk hilarious "hate" community that started out as lolscenequeens, then ~efagz and now I believe it's ediotz. Unfortunately I lost my account in the great LJ purge since I hadn't logged on in ages, resulting in my membership being lost since now it's a closed community last time I checked :/ I heard it's still even a little active, too. sigh I wish I could still log on from time to time to partake in my favorite guilty e pleasures.

Surprisingly, most of them are still at it & haven't changed (and please never change, ladies!). I was lucky enough to catch Hannabeth win the House of DvF reality show. Primo quality entertainment right there. However, she plumped her lips to shit and looks like a poor man's Kim Kardashian/Kylie Jenner now, which was probably the biggest disappointment/letdown of the bunch for me, personally :/

In other news, Audz has evolved in to a new age hipster who continues to discourage parents from vaxxing their children (...), and now sells healing crystals and whatnot, because of course she would. And last I checked, Jac was the most successful of the bunch, still "doing well" selling clichè hipster merch that minor (actual) celebrities buy, for some incomprehensible reason. Oh, and Attila Tequila has become some sort of straight up "hell Hitler" neonazi? And possible Trump supporter? I need to actually read that article because it sounds too hilariously attention-seeking to possibly be true.

sigh That's all I really know about how our beloved bunch is doing now. Anyone else have any other fun information? Curious, and ofc always love reliving my guilty 15-year-old self's pleasures.

Oh wow, you know a lot. You should do a write-up here about some of this stuff. Not many people here know about it. I'm not too sure what happened to anyone but Kiki aside from Tila Tequila, who more or less got converted to /pol/ by someone she started skyping somehow. She's now a full-blown conspiracy theorist neo nazi, yeah.

Lol thanks :p I just stumbled across r/drama today, I'll have to read some more stuff on here & see what's already been posted! It's cool to see some ppl are still talking about my favorite hot messes, always a great gossip vice for me when I can't sleep 💁🏻

Welcome and please stick around! 😁 you might also love the website lolcow.farm if you're into trainwrecks, it's girl-oriented too.
