It is tempting to think that this is not America, but this is America. This is the America of the Puritans, of slave traders, of the Trail of Tears, of the Confederacy, of John Wilkes Booth, of the Ku Klux Klan, of lynchings, of J. Edgar Hoover, of America First, of Joseph Mccarthy, of Lee Harvey Oswald, of Sirhan Sirhan, of James Earl Ray, of Richard Nixon, of Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. That America isn't going away and is still with us.
Saying that Donald Trump doesn't represent America is a failure to see what is in front of us - that America has only rarely been a force for good in the world, and has just as often been a force of repression and evil. We should be grateful to those who have helped us see these things more clearly.
