Tonight and 2016 overall have been very bad for the world. My only hope is that 2020 will see a Democratic landslide and the census will let us re-gerrymander the districts and give Republicans a taste of their own medicine.
However, the reason I'm posting is because of a concern of a growing trend in thought. This is the fallacy of the False Equivalency.
We all know Hillary's not perfect. She has about as much corruption as any other politician and has had to get her hands a bit dirty to get what she believed was right for America. That all said, almost all of the scandals surrounding her have amounted to nothing. It's all plainly obvious that they are the result of decades of the Clinton Scandal Cottage Industry. No, she did not "rig" the primary and even if she did, the Democratic Party is a private organization anyway. Her emails amounted to nothing. Benghazi amounted to nothing. Pretty much every conspiracy surrounding her has been debunked.
And yet, the go-to phrase this election has been "Oh well they're both bad" Really? Really!? REALLY?!?!?!? Not only has Trump been guilty of nearly everything Hillary has been accused of times a hundred, but he is a racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic child in a 70 year old's body. But even though everyone knows this, they just shrug their shoulder's and go "Yeah but they're both equally bad." The false equivalency is the lazy, stupid man's way of sounding smart and jaded; it's monumentally easier to just be cynical than to take a good hard look at the facts and come to very evident conclusions.
And you know who has been the master at spreading false equivalencies? Vladimir Putin. His entire propaganda strategy has been, "Yeah Russia's undemocratic, but look at America. Everywhere's bad! Now shut up and vote for me or enjoy your polonium sandwich!"
This is it. This is where thinking every politician is equally bad has gotten us. I hope you're happy America because in a year's time when news outlets start shutting down one by one, crime goes up, minorities are deported or imprisoned, coal doesn't come back, climate change swallows up Florida and dries up California, and Eastern Europe falls to a two-bit dictator, all you Trump voters will be very sorry. But it is too late. The damage has been done and all you who voted for him will have to live with it for the rest of your short lives. And all us smug rational people who voted for Hillary will have to bear the consequences of your mistake.
Not to say we liberals in our ivory towers are entirely blameless, but let's be real: it's almost completely your fault Republicans.
So go ahead and think we just got one evil over another. I'm sure that will offer small comfort.
