It's going to be okay. Climate change isn't going to be fixed or broken by a 4 year term.

The earth is more resilient than we helicopter-parent-environmentalists give it credit it for. Granted, it's fallen off the monkey bars and cracked its skull wide open, but DON'T TELL YOUR MOTHER, we'll... glue it together.

[–]MimesAreShiteembarrassed by role as national erotic symbol [

US support of climate efforts isn't the be all and end all, but it is a big deal. trump's plans to abolish the EPA and pull out of the paris agreement will put a serious dent in efforts to fight climate change.

still, yeah. the earth will be fine. the life on it... not so much.

Remember that Trump believes in climate change when it's convenient for him.

Oh gosh, look at Mars-Let-Go-My-Eggo, lovely property he has there, shame if it happened to be swallowed up by rising sea levels.

This and the supreme court really hurt...if it wasn't for those two things then I would fully enjoy the DNC getting what comes to them.

But now it's just a really, really bittersweet feeling.

I mean, Trump is likely going to do more than just fuck up the supreme court and the planet. But maybe the DNC will finally try to actually get their shit together.

I don't mind the stuff outside those two, they can always be reversed.

The Supreme Court and the Planet though...it's too late and change would take way too long.

Seriously though, according to the average voter, Trump is the more centrist candidate.

In the October 2016 wave of the ongoing Institute for the Study of Citizens and Politics study, we asked respondents to place Donald "A lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive" Trump and Clinton on a 7 point ideology scale. On average, voters put Donald "A lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive" Trump 0.64 points to their right — and put Clinton a whopping 1.88 to their left. Put differently, the average voter saw Clinton as decisively to their left, while ranking Donald "A lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive" Trump’s views as closer to their own. They also had more uncertainty about exactly where to place Donald "A lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive" Trump. Should he win, one of the challenges he will likely face is that he may be forced to clarify just how conservative he is through the process of governing.

Unfortunately, a lot of voter protections were removed in the runup to this election. A lot of people just couldn't vote. (Side note: Take a wild guess at who those protections were intended to protect, and guess which demographic would universally have brought Hillary to power?)

This is the problem with two-party systems, I reckon.

If you have more proportional representation then governments have to be formed from coalitions, so the system becomes about collaboration and cooperation - there's no incentive to tear down good work.

If anyone in "the media" deserves blame it's cable news, esp. CNN.

If you got most of your info from cable news you'd think the Clinton campaign was nothing but the email scandal & Trump was a deserving spectacle, as every damn thing he said got rolling coverage positive or negative. The difference between this and a lot of print/digital news is positively enormous.

[–]fellmir'investigate 3-11' [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

CNN for a "progressive" news network did a whole lot in this regard. Coupled with how we're living in the era of echo chambers... Ugh. I can't even fathom what is in line for the future.

Am I the only one who feels like a passage in a history book?

"In the 2010's a wave of right-wing extremist politics sweapt across the western world. This wave manifested itself in not only the UK's choice to leave the EU, but also in the rise of nationalist parties like the French Front National or the German AfD, as well as the election of President Trump in the USA."

And no way whatever this passage is building up to is anything good.

You know, I counted the Brexit vote. I was one of the people counting the ballots. I live in a fairly left-wing area of England. (The distinction is important.) I was certain that Brexit would not happen. Then I counted the votes. At 3am the day after polls closed, at the realisation that my area had voted to leave (which almost certainly meant that the rest of the country was doing the same), I had a literal panic attack out of worry for what the hell that meant for the future. (Yay, anxiety disorders...)

If I was American right now... holy hell, I don't even want to think about my reaction. Especially since I'm a mentally ill disabled lesbian, AKA "someone definitely on Trump's shitlist"...

I think at some point we have to acknowledge that the "hateful assholes" aren't literally half of the country. That's just a loud fringe. There are real reasons that Trump is getting elected, largely economic reasons, and it's time to stop ignoring it.

According to exit polls people who thought foreign policy or the economy was most important tended to vote Clinton. People who felt terrorism and immigration were most important voted Trump.

Additionally, people who said they chose a candidate just because they didn't like their other options were more likely to be Trump voters. The whole thing is just a steaming mess.

Are these the same polls that said Hillary would win?

I'm convinced that the majority of Trump's support is ultimately about a sense of economic disenfranchisement - that for many people the American Dream seems to be evaporating.

[–]FeycatDo Not Want. [

Yeah, that's a valid point for a guy who's wasted more money than any of these people will ever get a glimpse of, regularly fucks over the working class and was literally born rich. He's clearly the proper mouthpiece for disenfranchised working poor.

Fucking morons.

No these were exit polls, which are usually quite accurate and which certainly didn't call the election for hillary.

[–]tawtawthe virtue signalling is coming from inside the house

Well it looks like there are a lot of places that have recovered strongly and/or have not been impacted by trade that still voted heavily for Trump. And Ohio literally just retained Bush's trade czar as Senator. So good luck keeping that particular narrative intact tbh. It's more about perception about who is making gains and about how those folks don't deserve their success. I canvassed in NC & this is how a lot of Trump LVs talked.

edit- I mean I talked to several Trump people who simultaneously loved the tax credits they got out of the stimulus & lost their shit over "welfare moms with steak dinners".

[–]Nottabird_Nottaplane [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

I think at some point we have to acknowledge that the "hateful assholes" aren't literally half of the country.

They are. Just because you believe you stand to benefit economically from your voting does not change that you're a racist, sexist & LGBTophobe. The two aren't at all mutually exclusive.

You know what, no.

Fuck that. Everybody. Every single person who walked into a voting booth last night and voted for Trump is a hateful asshole.

Either because they're racist/sexist/homophobic enough to believe in the shit that Trump says to get votes, or they're just indifferent enough or dumb enough to not care that he's a massive ass-clown.

It's not like the country is actually in a crisis deep enough that setting everything on fire and starting over is a good idea. At this point, the only people who will vote for the "set the country on fire" option are just bad people.

Yeah, a lot of them are too dumb to discern fact from fiction and think if Hillary was elected we'd have abortion death camps by February 2017.

The rest are hateful assholes, and/or rich people stroking their wallets lovingly.

Because the economy is too good?

Here's one view that I think resonates with a lot of Trump supporters, for the sake of trying to understand what is going on:

There is a very large portion of the country for which the economic numbers you're seeing are not translating into a better quality of life. The disconnect between main street and Wall Street is hitting hardest in the very same places where Trump is winning the most, and that's not a coincidence. Huge swaths of America are stagnating and being left behind while Wall Street, the media, large corporations and establishment politicians pat each others backs and line each others pockets and leave the rest of the people out to dry.

Almost all the Trump talking points that have been derided in various ways by Trump's opponents (not entirely without justification, either) have common economic threads in them - "bringing back" jobs, reducing illegal immigrant competition for jobs, reducing competition from foreign countries, etc. They're all things that appeal to people that want a good job and a better life but can't find them. And those people are voting.

I think Bernie Sanders would have stood a very good chance of beating Trump, because he appealed to those same sentiments. Hillary Clinton does not, despite beginning to pick up Bernie's talking points later in the race. She's the quintessential entrenched establishment candidate, and represents that same status quo that economically disenfranchised people blame for their pain.
