What's the craic with Vigo County voting 54/41 for Trump so far?

[–]Dobbins [

If you haven't done so yet and you are able, go vote. Good luck America, may we not fuck this up.

As an Australian I am concerned about the way your ballots are run - it seems, from the outside at least, like there is quite a lot of effort to keep the most vulnerable from the voting boxes - including things like holding the voting during a week day, not providing adequate translation services, and not enough accessibility options for people in remote areas, not enough protections against voter impersonation, and other questionable tactics, like questionable ID requirements, voter purges, and fraudulent counting. Not to mention all the citizens from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in prison for minor infractions.

Would you guys allow a UN taskgroup to impartially observe the next elections?

You are correct.

And if it were up to me, I would allow election monitors.

Sadly, the powerful in this country never will, as they stay in power using tools like voter disenfranchisement. They do not want true democracy.

difficulty of voting is entirely dependent on the state. my state for instance has a mail in ballot so voting is actually extremely easy and being on a weekday really doesn't matter in the slightest as I put my vote in a week ago.

and no the UN can fuck off. we already have a separate system in place to observe the election process.

A bit of real talk here Reddit. Even if your preffered candidate doesn't win that does not signal the end of the world or a giant cataclysmic event. Just like the fear around Brexit causing a global meltdown was overestimated, the consequences of this election will fade into the ether and while some changes will occur, it won't be the end of the world. Please chill

How do polling stations work? Do they close early or something?? I see votes already counted on the east coast but it's only 5 pm MST. Im in Canada and polling stations dont close til 8pm MST and they dont count until all polls are closed. If theyre still open how isnt that voter encouragement or whatever??

East coast polling stations. Remember, time zones.

Yea but in Canada we dont release those votes until voting stations are closed MST to avoid bending (discouraging/encouraging) votes.

So, I'm curious. I haven't been on Reddit long. How did this thread look during our last election or two? Are things crazier now or do they only appear to be?

I'll tell you one thing. Election threads are being massively controlled. Usually election news and scandals are on the front page, and dominating every single news/politics/controversy sub.

Look around on top subs that are even closely related to USA, politics or news. You'll see a tiny handful of election threads, or none at all.

Not saying it's a bad thing. But that's how it is.

Things are not today "crazy" on reddit at all, and that's very very different.

A few Qs. Can anyone become a candidate? If so many people are unhappy with both hillary and trump will this mean that the other two candidates get more votes? Are there any other kinds of voting options like voting against a candidate but not for the other?

Can anyone become a candidate?

Must be 35yo. Must be a "natural born" U.S. citizen. Must have lived in the U.S. for 14 years.

If so many people are unhappy with both hillary and trump will this mean that the other two candidates get more votes?

Not necessarily. If your candidate has no chance, you might vote for the big candidate that aligns closest to your ideals. Something to note, if a third party gets more than 5% they will qualify for public campaign financing next election.

Are there any other kinds of voting options like voting against a candidate but not for the other?

No. It's a simple "check the box next to your choice". Although you can often write in your own choice, Mickey Mouse for instance.

The US uses a "first past the post" voting system combined with the electoral college. In practice, that means that only two candidates have a realistic chance to win, and voting for anyone else is equivalent to not voting. So everyone votes for the candidate that they consider slightly less horrible to avoid an even worse fate. Of course, if enough people switched to a third candidate at once this would work, but in practice, this doesn't happen

  • Yes, as long as they are a natural born citizen, are over the age of 35, have lived in the US for the last 14 years, and have no felony convictions.

  • Possibly, however a LOT of people are entrenched in our two party system, and will vote party lines regardless. I'm guilty of this, this is the first election where I voted for a Republican (State Secretary, the democrat incumbent has too many scandals).

  • Sort of. You can vote for a candidate, not vote at all, or vote for a candidate not on the ballot and write their name in. You can't vote against a candidate, though.

Let's, please, try to remember:

Tomorrow we are all still Americans, friends and neighbors. We can disagree, just don't be a dick. No violence, no hatred, no attacking each other. Everyone has the right to their opinions. You don't have to respect the opinions, but you have to respect the right.

Stay safe.

Be excellent to each other.

Party on.

[–]Tormunch_Giantlabe [スコア非表示]  (7子コメント)

Those days are over, friend. Social media plus increasingly-polarized media outlets equals an ever dividing country. The fringes get further out there, the middle gets pushed further out too.

You can't have one side saying that the other is literally Satan and then have all things peaceful afterwards. The price we pay for this rhetoric is violence.

There could be other prices. Maybe we should all bring donuts to our lives tomorrow? Donuts could be the price

[–]Tormunch_Giantlabe [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Yeah, but why are my friends jumping off? What if the bridge is on fire. If a bunch of people start jumping off bridges, they may have a good reason.

I know we disagree on a bunch of things, friends. I wholeheartedly believe that Trump would be far worse for our nation going forward than anything Hillary could do. I ended up voting Johnson here in Oklahoma as a protest vote (we're so solidly red and gerrymandered not even one county goes blue in these elections).

But just because I don't like Trump doesn't mean I don't respect you as fellow Americans. I don't deny that you have the same right I do to help pick the next President. I don't deny that you are my fellow citizens. Remember that no matter how this election goes, we're all in the ship together, so keep us all as safe as you can, and good luck to you in tonight's races.

Thank you for your time.

I know we disagree on a bunch of things, friends. I wholeheartedly believe that Trump would be far worse for our nation going forward than anything Hillary could do.

You know that Hillary voted for the war in Iraq, right? That war cost the country over a trillion dollars, and hundreds of thousand of people died, not to mention the increases in terrorism. Hillary Clinton is a sociopath. Trump, while not perfect, is by every measure the lesser of two evils.

Thank you for voting, friend. If you genuinely think that Trump is the better candidate, then I'm glad you can vote for him with a clear conscience. That's something that all Americans should be able to do.

I went with Johnson too and I am in a blue state. for all the good its going to do right? at least I can sleep at night though.

I wholeheartedly believe that Trump would be far worse for our nation going forward than anything Hillary could do.

I politely disagree.

I feel that actions speak louder than words.

Yes. He's a loud mouthed air head who insults women.

But her actions have spoken far louder. Her complete disregard for classified material. Everything involving Bill's marital...whatever you want to call it, he's a rapist. I could list them all, but I think we're all familiar with it by now.

Everyone says "Trump says this, Trump says that."

But...what about Hillary has DONE?

But...what about Hillary has DONE?

I'm astounded at the support she's gotten. She is truly an evil person. If there was a hell, she would go there. But when people vote they don't vote with their minds. They vote with their hearts. Politicians know this. This is how they can take power, and ruin an entire country. This is the greatest flaw in a democracy.

I too feel that actions speak. But my primary two concerns with Trump, all other stuff aside, are these:

"We're not gonna ask for America back. We're gonna take it." In every instance Trump has made it clear that anyone who opposes him is not an American, not welcome in America, and has voiced his opinion that they deserve violence to happen to them.

Like I said before: you are my fellow Americans. Your rights are as important to me as my own. That is not true for Trump.

Item 2, the Supreme Court. We do not need a corporate owned SCOTUS. We may get one with Hillary. We will get one with Trump.

Everything else "cancels". I don't like any of the corrupt bullshit Hillary has done. I don't think she's a viable candidate against anyone less thoroughly bad than Trump. I don't like Hillary at all. Period.

I just think we the people will be better off with a Hillary presidency than the utter circus Trump would cause. That's all.

Your comment is absolutely ridiculous. Trump said some bad things, but is that anything compared to Hillary's participation in wars, and terrorism? Jesus. Get your priorities straight. I'd rather vote in a blabbermouth than a war criminal.

She didn't mean to assassinate

She didn't mean for so many soldiers to die

She didn't mean to rig the primaries

She didn't mean to arm terrorists

She didn't mean to wipe her server with...like a cloth

She didn't mean to call Americans, deplorables

She didn't mean to call Americans, basement dwellers

She didn't mean to call African Americans, super predators

She didn't mean to pay groups to incite violence at Trump rallies

She doesn't want to bring 600K refugees into USA

She didn't mean to support the TPP.

She didn't mean to say she has a public and private opinion in her paid speeches to wallstreet.

She didn't mean to support the destruction of Syria.

She didn't mean to make life for African Americans so horrible.

She did't mean to cover for her rapist husband Bill Clinton.

I already saw Hillary's problems, but wikileaks just proved them 100% correct: she embodies the corruption of our current politics that has deteriorated America over the years.

BTW, I'm not white, I am hispanic (in case you are going to try to play the race card).

I'm spending all day working at a polling site. The mood is subdued, the lines are long, and I'm frustrated by how apathetic so many of my fellow citizens are about this process. Yes, we're all frustrated by the shitshow that is the 2016 presidential race, but this is our country, our democracy. Give a fuck, you self-centered shitheads! >:-[

I'm just speaking for myself, but I feel apathetic as hell without losing sight of the election's importance. I care about this country and I genuinely want it to thrive, but when I don't think either candidate is close to "ideal," it's hard to feel enthusiasm. I can feel apathy towards the candidates while still having ample fucks to give about the country and election process

The lack of accountability in our leaders, the fact that the rich and powerful are objectively above the law, that Congress is bought off, the president's powers have expanded to absurd levels, and the two candidates forced onto us were these two cunts.
